LOVIN the avatar Rich. Well done son
However, I won't be joining you as I'll already be at the campsite by then BUT as an alternative it might be good for you to meet at Aust services which is on the A48 (Old Severn Bridge) as people coming up the M5 and across from the M4 can all meet without going out of their way and then here is a nice route for you to get to the campsite
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=110037467848057351823.00048bd9bd0205ee522d9&hl=en&doflg=ptm&ie=UTF8&ll=51.808615,-2.947083&spn=0.813419,2.458191&z=9

+1, an excellent route even if Dan does say so himself...lol. Darn it...should have done the AR a little further south as the Chepstpw-Abergavenny road is amazing :-)
Thanks for the tips guys - I'll take a look...

What sort of speeds are we talking about? If Foxy and I were to join you, I think the average speed might be a bit slower than you would be expecting.

Steady speeds Stig - I for one want to get to the AR in one piece.
Currently considering Stretchies route suggestion. It would mean our entire route will be something like THIS (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=A3057&daddr=Romsey+Rd%2FA3057+to:Andover+Rd%2FA342+to:A3 42+to:Andover+Rd%2FA342+to:Gains+Ln%2FA342+to:51.3 53827,-1.994877+to:London+Rd%2FA4+to:M4+to:Unknown+road+t o:B4235+to:B4598+to:Unknown+road+to:A438&geocode=Fc7PCQMdYGvp_w%3BFcKIDAMd9rvp_w%3BFUkHDgMd H5nn_w%3BFSCNDgMdTtbl_w%3BFdjyDgMdgh3j_w%3BFbyTDwM dzp_h_w%3B%3BFYAHEQMd2Brg_w%3BFf_5EQMdsfPe_w%3BFat mEwMdnwLY_w%3BFYsJFAMdKDnW_w%3BFcRmFgMdnj_S_w%3BFR K3FgMd7_7R_w%3BFUu5GgMdm-rP_w&hl=en&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=6&sz=14&via=1,2,3,4,5,6,7,10,11&sll=51.348091,-1.97814&sspn=0.040582,0.091066&ie=UTF8&ll=51.548043,-2.535095&spn=1.292936,2.914124&z=9) with three stops in total. No problem - We'll be stopping at the Leigh Delamere Services (M4) for our main break regardless - apx 11 - 11:30am. If you're there, you're more than welcome to join. The pace will be steady from there as we don't know the roads/route. I imagine the first half will be a little quicker.
Also, we'll consider a marking system (with a lead, TEC etc) if the group size increases.
Drop me a PM when the decision has been made and I'll forward my contact details.

Guys, the B4235 road on that route, going from Chepstow towards Abergavenny is amazing. One of my favourite roads. There are a few bends on it that tighten up and but they are well marked with chevrons.
You're going to love it, whether you do it quickly or slowly. Actually...if you go back that way, you'll probably love it more....I'm not very fast on that road going towards Abergavenny, but on the way back I can fly along it....Squirrel-Hunter is the same.

Well, Severn View (Aust) Services is a great meeting point, just before the tolls...no, you don't have to pay when on a bike. When you go over the bridge, be ready to be smacked by wind if there is any kind of breeze in the air, it's not bad or anything, just be prepared for it, i.e. don't pass a lorry too close to it or ride too close to the barriers.
When you get off the bridge...two big roundabouts, then left at a mini roundabout takes you onto this road and immediately into the twisties :-) They last the length of the road and are a good indication of the twisties you'll get on the AR :-)

ok peeps,I took gavin wideboy on this route last yr and its brill. If I come with you then I'll point the way.
I'd like to meet you at Aust services if possible please - that way I won't be doing a 40 mile double back.
Will go TEC if you like - just give me a map, just in case :)

Done - Although dependant on group size we may not have a dedicated TEC.
I will be editing the OP to include a stop at Aust (Severn View) Services and a change of route to include the Chepstow > Abergavenny road.
Oh and I will have a few copies of the route details with me for those that want it.
Have two routes planned? Becuase if the weather isn't up to scratch the Chepstow to Aber road can cause more problems that it's worth?
And thanks - what sort of time do you estimate for Aust servies?
Finally - RichT, can you lay your hands on some Hampshire 'BoxingDog' cider? They used to sell it on Southampton Uni campus in old plastic milk containers...it's the mutts nutts.

That road won't cause too many problems if it's just wet, rainy or windy...the tarmac as you know Ben is awesome and smooth and a good surface for grip.
If it's super duper stormy weather...still not a lot of point changing the route as there are no major routes to the campsite whever you come from....all are roads similar to the Chepstow - Aber road.
Oh and Ben.........WOOOOO HOOOOO...see you there!
Actually I have no doubt we'll see you before :-)
You will - I still have Dan's back protector.
GG - if I'm being honest...I'M SO EXCITED!!!

Not sure yet as is all dependant on our friend from afar and when he feels up to the ride.....Jetlag to be taken into consideration, but if all is fine in the morning, hoping to leave here about 10am.

We'll be departing LD Services @ 11:30 - So we should be at Aust by midday. Plan is a brief stop at Aust (circa 15 minutes).

ALL - Just a point for when we get to the AR site.
There is a petrol station a few hundred yards up the road past the site entrance (Texaco). I plan to refuel there before going in and setting up me tent, so that I am ready for Saturday's rideout.
What I intend to do is lead the group to the site entrance and mark the last turn (a left) myself. If I remember I'll put my hazards on. If you want to refuel your bike then, give us a wave and drive on by. The petrol station will be on your right - if not take the left turn.
I will remind folk this on the day.
Does that make sense to everyone?
Either that or I lead to the petrol station...
Also, please be aware I am staying to Monday 9/8 and will most likely take a different route home. Please ensure you have sorted your own route home (although a bit of company would be good).
BTW - here's a TASTER (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zhqlx5e-NI) of the B4235 Chepstow > Usk road

To a degree, but unless they're winter or waterproof boots, then not really. but then you can't go out and buy all new gear just-in-case.

Keep it rubber side down.

Yup. Things changed again. Sorry for the in out in out rubbish. This is now 100% confirmed. (probably).
For those meeting at LD. I'll be on a very cool Yamaha YZF750 with red panniers and black back pack (unless it's raining then I'll have the black waterproof covers on them). Foxy will be on a stealth black Kawasaki Ninja 250. :)
Looks like we're in for a good run. Hopefully the weather will be alright.

Yeah but with all the daisy sniffing you do we'll probably get to the site about the same time.
Looks nice. I hope it's dry :) I'm having some tyre issues at the moment. My rear won't hold pressure.
Booked in for new tyres tomorrow morning but fear it could be a valve or rim problem. Fingers crossed I get it sorted or I won't be coming :(

I had a nail removed from my rear (and puncture repaired) earlier this week. Fingers crossed its a straight forward thing.
Am calling Protyre at lunch to see what they think it might be. Tyre itself is in fairly good condition. I don't want new rubber if it's a leaky valve or rims!
A leaky rim...that's something no one wants.
Copied from Tyre pressure thread:
Rang Protyre on lunch. Man on the phone told me that when I arrive tomorrow I need to speak to Nick - who he assures me is the 'oracle' of motorcycle tyres, if there was such a thing.
The man on the other end of the phone assures me he will diagnose the problem and fix it, all in time for me to get some heat in the tyres and get to Aust for midday. Luckily, I have RichT's contact number, so if the said oracle cannot fix my tyres in time, I won't be left behind.
I am now sporting a brand new not even scrubbed in Bridgestone 021 rear. I hope the ride to the meeting point is at least dry to scrub them in a little. Had a look on Metcheck and the diagnosis seems to be chance of rain. It said that today and the weather was fine.
Have checked the weather forecast for Saturday in Hay on Wye. Not so good. No suprise there then. A wet AR rideout.

Which Protyre was that? The one I went to today after giving them my wheel told me there was an issue regarding the balancing. Instead of loading loads of weights on the wheel, they broke the bead again, spun the tyre round and tried again. It was still requiring over 70g weights so they put another new tyre on. Other places would have just slapped the extra weights on. And they charged me £110 fitted to a loose wheel for a 180/55/17. Happy with that.
Morning All - Looks like we may see a little of the wet stuff, but nothing to really worry about (although take it easy on the new rubber). I'll see you all a little later.
Give me a call if you need to.
Wet stuff. Pah! New tyre. Pah! It's the AR. Of course there is rain.
