Quedos and myself have both been having a real hard time trying to get Outlook (not Express) to cooperate with our blueyonder (now virgin) POP3 email. The silly sods think they are being all lovely and helpful by going over to the dreaded Google for email and as a result of which, all sorts of settings need to be changed to make it "secure" (yeah right!). They have emailed us on numerous occassions to tell us to make the changes but do not provide any support for the heavyweight package, just the express. Lovely automatic (allegedly) tools to do the changes for you but it doesn't work with ours. We both use the full package because it syncs callendar and contact details in addition to mail with our Pocket PCs. I have tried changing the ports etc as per the vague scribbles on one of their pages, but we still get "username / password invalid" or some other such security error.
Do any of you lovely peeps have any idea how we can resolve this settings change?
Ta muchly,
Garry

In my experience their servers would frequently deny access even with the correct settings, not used them in a while.
I just checked my email using their online facility, i realise this can be inconvenient.

I know what you mean by inconvenient. I have more than one email address set up in Outlook and it syncs them all to the pocket PC. Additionally, when the damn net goes down or whatever and you're in a hurry to check through info within an email, having it on your own machine works. Not ever going to be a fan of "webmail" or "Cloud" computing. pi55 poor if you ask me.
Im on Virgin but i use Live Mail as its the only one that will also sync with Hotmail as well. I haven't made any changes at all and it gets my mail form Virgin and Hotmail and a few other accounts that i monitor as well :)

The cloud has its uses mind, good for additional backup and accessing services from anywhere.

You can set hotmail to forward all mails to one other email address. I've set this to my google account, as it seems to be the only way to get hotmail to download to a normal client.
just use the webmail... simples.
using outlook/express makes it easier for you to get a virus as it downloads everything from your inbox on the server straight to your computer. no matter how good your AV is its never completely up to date with the latest viruses.

Gary, what version of Outlook are you running? (Look in Help, About Microsoft Outlook)
Also need the new SMTP/POP server settings they have sent you.

Seem to have got a result on at least one exchange after a fair bit of mucking around. The problem seems to be stemming from the company still running differing equipment or protocols at the same time. One minute it looks for SSL before it will do owt, the next it doesn't want it.
I shall keep an eye on how it behaves for now. Cheers for the input everyone.
B.T.W. There is NO way that I shall regularly use webmail. Just not happening.
