View Full Version : Is throttle cable free play bad?

Does more free play give you more throttle lag?
It seems on the few bikes Ive had setting the cable free play to standard (3-5mm) causes a delay in acceleration when opening the throttle, causing the bike to surge forward. I set it between 1-2mm and I get more control during roll on/off of acceleration. Does this makes sense?
My main question is: is it bad for the cable/engine to have free play set to 1-2mm, coz I mucho prefer it?

Makes no difference, just have it so it does not rev engine at full lock. Make sure return cable has a little slack in it though, if you have both too tight throttle will stick.

I always adjust mine so its pretty much instant but obviously without it revving the bike on lock. Your new R6 will be fly by wire though won't it??? can you adjust them???

Is see free play as good for two reasons.
1. You release tension on the cables hopefully prolonging their life.
2. When you hit a bump you are less likely to accidently accelorate.

Only if you've got the throttle closed already

Ive got about 3mm play, but would like less. Unfortunately the R6 is nowhere near as easy to work on like the SV. I'll need to take the thing apart to get inside

No need to take the bike apart, underneath the throttle towards the headstock you will see the two throttle cables, you can adjust the freeplay from there

I did notice the two cables with what look like plastic adjusters, but they didn't budge and didnt want to use pliers on em. Will have another look though

The R6 is fly by wire isn't it. No cables that link it to the throttle bodies.

Use some kind of desiezer, would of thought they are metal nuts

No, not unless the latest model is

It looks like the latest model in the op picture. I'm sure its an 09 plate by the colour scheme etc

Not sure what fly by wire is. I can see 2 cables coming off the throttle and going to the engine where its got an adjuster. But im a newbie to all this so I could be wrong

Is that your R6 in the picture Avatar?? If so its fly by wire which simply means you turn the throttle which sends a signal to the ecu and it decides how much throttle to give ya. Its a lot more complicated than that but u get the jist

If that actually happens, then you are holding the bars way too tightly

That is pretty much all fly by wire does.
You still have throttle cables, sensor for throttle is not at bars.

If there are sensors involved would it better not to mess with it?
Just seen the service manual and there are throttle cable sensors on it and a warning that says:
Prior to adjusting the throttle cable free play, the engine idling speed and carburetor synchronization should be adjusted properly.

This is how I have my throttle cables and each time my bike goes in for an MOT it comes back out with too much slack again. Why do they feel they have to fiddle with it each time. Grrrr.

Because adjusting linkages and stuff can change starting point of throttle cam
