Avira anti virus is much better, ideal for netbooks free to use. Got in on my Acer Revo net top. Runs perfectly, hardly uses any memory and not had a single virus.

I've also uninstalled all the bloatware and disabled loads of windows 7 's features so it boots and runs very quickly given it's size.

ideally do a clean install of windows 7, but I doubt you'll have the original disc. Make a back up/restore/boot disc, so if you go wrong you can always go back.

Uninstall all the games, demos, trials that came preloaded. If you need an office suite use openoffice. It's free and fully compatible with Ms. Use Firefox as as browser and ditch explorer. Firefox is quick and light. Search on how to make windows 7 run faster.. I'll try and find the link I used.

i uninstalled the games already

it has mcafee loaded which seems very intrusive and always runs in the background and stops the 'book from shutting down sometimes

Mcafee is a system hog. Really slows it down. Unistall everything with mcafee on it after you install avira.

just go start, type 'msconfig' and turn all the crap off in startup. That will get things moving.
