I'm just starting to get back into this again after watch a few episodes of New Dominion Tank Police. Its been such a long time that I can't remember some of the ones I have watched, so I was hoping for a little refresher or even some recommendations of new films in the last 10 years.

It goes with-out saying that Akira, Ghost in the Shell and Patlabor (DVD on order) are obvious choices and I've just got a DVD of Robotech but here are a few I think might be worth looking at -

Castle of Cagliostro : I think I have seen it, but my memory is fuzzy.
Metropolis.
Appleseed : New - some bad reviews, but I liked the sound of the synopsis.
Laputa - Castle in the sky : I think I saw this when I was younger but can't be sure.
Gundam : I think I have seen some of the series but can't recall.
Howls moving castle.
The girl who leapt through time.
Paprika.
Princess Mononoke.
Bubblegum Crisis : I think I remember this being good, but I could be mistaken.
Steam Boy : Another I liked the synopsis, but not sure.

Views, opinions and recommendations would be great.

I liked The Wings of Honneamise, it's about the space program in an alternate timeline.

The Dirty Pair OAVs are funny too (I mean the originals, that is, not the Flash remakes) as they go around destroying entire planets in the course of their investigations.

Bubblegum Crisis (again, the originals for me) are indeed good, I love the Blade Runner-inspired setting.

Or you can just get Jiburiru: The Devil Angel and go mmmmm, tentacles.

I'll look up the 'Wings of Honneamise' as that sounds like my kind of thing.

"Spirited Away" sounds familiar... I'll have to look that up.

Battle Angel Alita is also a must see imo

i'd also watch final fantasy advent children, not for the story (based on the game) but for the sheer OTT anime style action scenes (awesome)

Most of Hayao Miyazaki's work. Some really great story telling there.

I'm a major FFX fan, and I would agree with this, especially if you have Blu-ray

Funny this, I have just acquired Laputa, My Neighbour Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service as I we reminiscing about my childhood favourites the other night.

Guyver was also one of my fav's.

I try to take my anime/manga in small doses, otherwise I have a habit of staying up however long it takes to watch an entire series lol. Not so healthy with 2 kids and a job, different when it was just school...

I've got a couple if you're interested...

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood: It's far, far better than the original Anime, far more faithful to the manga (which is still ongoing)
Appleseed and Appleseed Ex Machina: By the same guy as GITS, similar universe, but kinda cool. Second film is a little better in my opinion.
Elfin Lied: Emotional rollercoaster. Got a seamless blend of blood-fest action and heart-wrenching sadness, combined with a thrilling storyline. I loved it, need to find it and watch it again...

Can you get any of this on telly? The Anime Channel died the death and that seems to be it.

Any of the Hayao Miyazaki films are excellent with Spirited away and Princess Mononoke are particular standouts. The other films by studio ghibli are OK but Miyazaki is the best director. Avoid Tales of Earthsea as it is by the son and dreary and miserable. Also found the Girl who lept thro' time was not particullarly good, not too upset as we got it cheap off play.com, a good source of miyazaki / studio ghibli anime. Steamboy is also worth a punt if you can pick it up cheap - HMV were doing it for less than a fiver.

Geek? yeah probably, watching cartoons at my age!

Oh my god.. I cannot believe it took 3 pages for someone to say the bloody obvious thank you Stu, the rest of you should all be ashamed of yourselves

How about:

Fist of the North star
Golgo 13
Project A-Ko
Urotsukidoji
And, yeah as mentioned earlier

Appleseed
Guyver series
Ninja Scroll
Ghost in the shell
Vampire Hunter D

I actually quite liked Streetfighter but then that's just because I'm a Streetfighter fan (not a Mortal Combat fan, that's just kak)

You may also like:

Battle Royale (the first one not the sequel)

I had no idea they made Battle Royale into an Anime, I just have the manga.

Cooor, that's gotta be a gnarly piece of viewing.

Used to be dude, I loved that stuff I think I only have Akira left though. Girlfriends don't seem to appreiciate the finer points of anime kicking ass and gore and stuff... GURLZ ARE POO (except Grunty, she's amazing)

But I'm up for it. I got into horror/thriller films (Tartan Extreme) it just so happens that most of the good ones are asian.

Things like (AND NOT THE AMERICAN VERSION):

Ring (got all three of the films, and just to be a geek there is actually a fourth one 'The Twist' but I think you should google it and make your own mind up)
Dark Water
Tale of two sisters
The eye
Also, Infernal Affairs (all three films), if anyone has seen 'The Departed' with Leo Decaprio and a few other names in it, this is basically all three of the infernal affairs films shrunk into one film and Americanised. Great films

Still got alot of these, come and have a look dude

Yeah sorry, I meant to write live action before the last two

Two more recommendations

Just picked up another fantastic anime from HMV yesterday - SKY BLUE
Worth watching just for the opening featuring a futuristic bike going thru' the rain, turn up the volume on your sorround sound and enjoy!

Well worth £5.00 punt and no doubt!

Another animation worth watching is Renaissance - I think it is french (but very anime in style)but english dub with Daniel Craig, Ian Holm and Jonathon Pryce. The whole film is in black and white! and I mean b%W - no grey. You have to watch the first 1/2 hour again cos you cannot follow the story - too busy being amazed that such detail is possible with just B&W.
