Wouldn't bother with the bike cover, but if you've got the space...

If you've bought the AR clothing then you need to pack one tshirt and/or hoodie less

Because I'm in the cage I shall be bringing everything!!!! I'm sure far more than I need :)

I bought a tent with an extra bedroom so the bike will be sleeping in there - no cover needed, either that or the bike can sleep with me and my OH can sleep in the spare room :p

List looks pretty complete, liking the spare key reminder, keep meaning to do that and never do!!

never mind the waterproof for the bike don't forget a waterproof for you oh and ear plugs for sleeping in

hongman
28-07-10, 01:11 PM
Mouthwash - Eh, personal preference. The meds I take leave a nasty after-taste in my mouth first thing which brushing doesnt seem to rid of. I'll bring a travel sized bottle, wont take up much space.

Bike Cover - Um...was just thinking if it chucks it down...maybe I wont bring it then!

Lube - Small, again since I will be covering lots of (possible wet) miles, a good idea? Am I just being paranoid then? :D

What would a useful bike sized toolkit comprise of?

Spare key - noted.

Thanks

If it's raining, then the bike will get wet. :D

Toolkit, whatever is under the seat in the oem. Chain lube isn't a bad idea.

hongman
28-07-10, 01:15 PM
I did have the OEM toolkit when I bought the bike but I think I lost it on the road I crashed on :( Never even looked inside it - what's there?

Chain lube is a good call. The rideout itself isn't to far, but if you are travelling along way to get there and home again you might need it. Babywipes are also handy things to take camping to.

hongman
28-07-10, 03:21 PM
I'll be covering about 230 miles there and the same back I think, roughly (dependant on route, detours etc), plus the actualy rideout.

Babywipes - good call. Have stacks of the stuff!

Hehe! You forgot a very important one - DEODORANT. If the weather is anything like it is right now, you'll be half-cooked inside your gear.

hongman
28-07-10, 03:31 PM
My BO smells of roses...;)

I am wondering actually I'll even bother with hair gel, no matter what I'm going to have helmet (bike helmet...) hair most of the time anyway.

In case no one's mentioned these yet (can't be bothered to trawl through!)

Puncture kit if you've got one
Map of Wales in case you get lost
Phone (or the charger will be pretty darned useless :-P)
Wallet
Flipflops for the showers...
Swimming shorts?!

fenjer
29-07-10, 02:41 PM
what would you carry as an emergency tool kit for the bike? I've not got the original one with mine...

Suggestions please?

edit: Possibly wise to bring a spare visor for your lid if you have one

Further to this, OdourEaters spray if you've got it. I like to go shopping and for lunch and such on my way into work which can mean I spend more times in my bike boots than is good, and giving them a spray before I leave home and then again when I get home prevents them becoming minging.

Bear in mind that you'll be stuck in your tent, you don't want to be gassed by the green clouds coming from your boots.

My toolkit for bike looks something like this:
8,10,12,14,17mm Spanners / socket
Puncture repair kit
Screwdrivers (Ph #2, PH#3 & Flat head)
Spare Brake & clutch levers if possible
Gaffa/Duct tape & cable ties
4,5,6mm allen keys
Pliers / Mole grips
Latex gloves (You always have a problem with the dirtiest part of the bike)

That aside:
Side-stand puck (Though I believe Messie's bringing a few spares)
Tent
Sleeping Bag
Torch (with extra batteries)
Wallet
Phone that'll last the whole weekend / some method of charging in a field, there will NOT be 200 wall sockets...
Deoderant
T-shirts, socks & underwear
Chain lube
Camera

That should pretty much sort it

140 of them delivered last week end lol!

I've got the standard toolkit on the bike, but there's little point as I wouldn't know what to do with half of it.

Note to self - make sure breakdown/recovery insurance is up to date!

True - I carry bits and bobs, but in reality if it's not really obvious how to fix it, or I cant be talked through it on the phone, it's straight on the phone to the recovery people, which is all up to date having been renewed just before the GM.

If it rains, you get wet. You won't melt and you won't shrink. (Says the person who used to be 6ft 8 :p)

I'm bringing a van with our bikes in it so will bring plenty of stuff for all occasions...in fact...I gaurantee I will bring more stuff than any right minded person would need...that's just how I roll!

30-07-10, 10:36 AM
TBH if you ride your bike on a daily basis without a toolkit or don't know how to use one, the last place you'll have a problem is on a mass ride out with probably at least a quarter of the riders having a toolkit and the knowledge to help you use it!

Get a basic tool kit if you like, it's not a bad thing to carry with you at all times, but don't worry too much if you haven't got one for the AR

BBc...go commando, you dont even need to worry about 1 pair then ;)

ANYWAY

I half heartedly made an attempt at strapping everything to the bike today, and it didnt go too well, lol.

Turns out my bungee straps are FAR too small :(

I think I may end up chucking all my camping stuff (inc tent, sleeping bag, air bed) into a duffal bag (all fits) and using my oxford soft panniers for clothes and the rest of the stuff. That way I only have to worry about securing one bag and not a seperate tent, bag, etc...

Are you taking a pillion ?

If not, then put your stuff into the panniers making sure you keep the weight equal between them or you'll end up with a strange handling bike. Then put your tent arcoss the top of the panniers / pillion seat and then bungee onto that, The panniers and pillion seat will give you a nice wide platform for everything else that way then.

hongman
31-07-10, 10:34 PM
No pillion.

I'm sure I'll come up with something Fizz! Must must must remember to buy some last minute stuff though...

Look at some of the pictures from previous AR's to get an idea of (a) how to strap stuff to a bike and (b) just HOW MUCH stuff can be strapped to a bike!!

Well, did a test pack on the bike!

Duffal bag on top has tent, sleeping bag, airbed, few random bits. Lots of room left.

Pannier are emtpy but will be filled with clothes/light goods. I'll wrap the duffal bag in black sacks and the panniers come with their own waterproof bags!

All secured, feels solid enough. It feels a lot heavier than I anticipated though. Hope it doesnt affect my riding too much, I'll just remember to take it super easy, as smooth as possible.

If you're getting two new tyres I suggest you try to get out and about as much as possibe this week to scrub them in a bit. Not essential, mind, 'cos the first bit of our journey will be boring straight lines, but it does help. Particularly if you're not used to a loaded bike.

Thanks Sally :D

The guy actually just come and fit my tyres :o Literally just done. He did warn me several times to take it easy, on the front (rear is part worn - basically just been scrubbed in, still 6mm tread left!)

I'm going to use it to go to work on the next few days to get em scrubbed.

Well, done my checks tonight so all ready, havent used any oil (bonus), front tyre pressure a bit low, rear perfect.
Turned up my preload on the rear to six clicks out from fully in, which is roughly what manual says for luggage plus pillion.
So, apart from a wash and lube chain, its ready for luggage :)

hongman
02-08-10, 10:07 PM
I did wonder about my suspension but I have no idea what I'm doing so I'm leaving it alone. Only luggage.

I know my front is showing 2 notches, don't even know how to tell what the rear is on. Oh and I lost the oem kit so no c spanner lol.

Did a test run with the bike fully loaded everything seams fineI would have the tent n bag on the back, not on the seat. On the motorway you will want to slide back a bit ont eh seat. and stick the slepping bag in a black bag just in case. You dont want a wet sleeping bag as rain is forecast for the journey down according to the met office.
