View Full Version : Which other bikes does the SV share sprockets with?
As above.
I know the front is compatible across a large range of bikes including the GSXR600 but what about the rears? Bandit? Anything?

What would lead you to that conclusion?
Why, get sprockets for your SV, they are cheap enough really.

renthal aluminium ones in 520, for the SV, £25. In 525, £26.

bandits and sv's are parts bin specials. Why re-invent the part when you have got a foundary producing a part that would work.

Then you need to re-word to something like
"I don't actually know, but Bandits, GSXR's and SV's often share parts, so that's worth investigating further"
bandit and the gsxr's would be compatible.
I know you said "I would say", but what if somebody only scanned your response and read it as per quoted above? Or assumed because you had posted advice that you where a mechanic or something, and "you would say" because you've seen them all many times and they look the same.
Got to be careful how/when you post advice on the forum, there are those idiot enough out there to take it at face value and believe you.

Fair enuf Ralph. Point taken
At least I ain't giving Shervin'esqke advice
"paint your brake discs for the ultra mean affect!"
"cutting hole in your chassis should give another 10bhp"
Warning the above quotes are for comical value and should be taken as that

No, just pointless comments.
The fact that he's asking suggests he knows that there may be some similarity, but at last count there have been what? 11 different generations of GSXR since the slabside, of which there were differences in final drive between capacities, they definitely made a lot of changes through the slingshots lifetime, again when they changed to SRAD and AGAIN when they changed to the K1-3.
That's not including various gens of bandit, teapot, powerscreen or inazuma.
So what the f*ck out of that lot would lead you to say they will "probably" fit? All 3 dozen different parts can't all go on!
A lot of the bigguns don't even use a 525 chain for chrissake...
P.S Both gens of SV share the same final drive sprockets.

I feel a BASAT thread coming on.
Here's what I've managed to find out before posting.
Thhe front sprocket is shared with GSXR SRAD, K1-K5 and other bikes including some kawasakis and bandits middleweights.
The rears as far as I can find out are the same as the middleweight bandits.
The SRAD rear is a 6 hole and the GSXR K1-K5 is a 5 hole.
I was looking for a similar fitment to the rear SV sprocket from either a Race bike (like the 250 two strokes or similar) or a Sports bike such as a 600 as you can buy a carrier bag of used Renthal sprockets from those for coppers on Ebay.
SV specific sprockets are very rare second hand and so I'm looking at about 150 quid to cover the gearing bases for racing if I buy new Renthal sprockets.
I was trying to save £100 of that to puyt towards a dyno run by buying second hand.
Sprockets aren't rocket science. Onced you've chosen pitch the theres only two factors that affect compatibility. The size of the centre hole and the stud hole locations. Stud hole locations aren't that big a deal as they can be redrilled if not correct so we're down to which other bikes have the same size centre hole as the Sv.
Simples Skkrrrrrrkkk!

Slabside sprockets will fit slingshots and Bandits, my Bandit uses the old chain off my old 1052 Slabbie which had slingshot wheels and sprocket carrier, in fact at one stage the bandit had the back wheel and sprocket out of a 1100M in it.
I used to run a heavier chain and sprockets off an 1100 on my GS500 courier bike, chain lasted about 30000 courier miles.

Yeah you can swap and change between a load of the oilers, but there are still differences and they still won't be right for racing an SV.
I just checked the sprocket part numbers in the Bickers bible and the only bike that take the same sprocket and is a direct match for the SV in standard chain pitch (525) is the Bandit 400. Whether it matches any bikes in a 520 pitch is a different matter and will take further investigation.

Berlin , in short the answer is yes . I ordered a kit from B and C Express and I will check tomorrow but I am sure the front Sprocket was off a GSXR400 and the rear was off a Kawasaki ZRX 750 or something like that . I will check for sure tomorrow as I still have the packets in my workshop . DO NOT TAKE THIS INFO AS FACT YET

It doesn't help for you Berlin, as you are going in the opposite way, but for my higher geared SV I have a 1998-1999 front sprocket for a GSX-R 750 on it, not sure if the rear goes with that, But I'm a dimwit and expect things to go in pairs!
Surely if a front is compatible from another bike, the rear is....or is that not the case?
Not really correct. The front is down to the splines on the output shaft and sometimes the offset (which really eats sprockets!)
The rear is variable, as I said above, in the centre hole size, the number of stud and their placement.
The outer diameter is fixed by the pitch of the teeth and the number of them. If its say a 45 tooth 525 pitch it'll be the same OD as all other 45 tooth 525 sprockets. You can't squeeze in more teeth and keep the same diameter. They won't fit :)
Great answer above Lozzo and Badger, Just what I'm looking for.
