OK this may be a really thick thing to ask!
Took the SV out for the first time yesterday (me pillion).
Got up to Devils Bridge to see that the number plate had been touching the tyre the whole way there #-oNew number plate needed now
Why would this be?
Does the suspension need sorting out?
Help!!!

check what the preload is on it maybe on the lowest, but the shock may be finished

Preload, when carrying pillion it is advised to increase preload on compensate for the extra weight. If however you both weigh normal amounts chances are you are already to weighty for the original shock to handle anyway, in which case it's stop riding two up with that amount of weight or uprate the shock.

The suspension should move through its entire travel, knackered or not, without the numberplate hitting anything.
Work that out first, then think about whether the suspension is working properly.

Can't the angle/position of the numberplate be adjusted?

nope unless stuck out well clear of the bike or hung from the swing arm

Some do adjust.
It sounds like its a shock issue when pillion weights are on the shock

Does the bike have the standard shock? If yes, then it's not about the shock, knackered or not it has the same travel, if the tyre hits anything then either the numberplate/and or tail tidy etc is not on right or is bent or not suitable or whatever, or the bike has been excessively lowered. Whatever has been done to the bike has allowed the tyre to touch. It's not about the shock being worn.

+1 When i bought my bike the previous lady owner had the bike lowered via dog bones as she was only 5 foot and weighed alot less than me so when i got on it the plate was touching the wheel and melting so i put standard bones back in and no problem now. Pic might help

Yep - with Sid on this one. Sounds like the standard rear mudguard has been removed and a "tail tidy" i.e. number plate bracket has been fitted. This could easily have the plate at such an angle as to interfere withe the tyre. Once you get pics, all will be revealed I'm sure.

I remember a while back that there was a Hamicad tail tidy that had a tendency to bottom out onto the tyre and that was done when going over speed bumps at slow speed and only one up . They did a redesign and sorted it so you may have one of their older tidys .

No.
See this. For f***s sake. It's a spring... it's meant to compress. (for the 3,102,504th time)

You could make a wedge to angle the plate up a bit.
Made one for my bike with some wood.
Also stops spray and stones bieng thrown up onto the lights.
