We are going to Germany for our hols ! (dont ask...) Looks likely to be Bonn or Cologne , Munich is possble but much more expensive to get to ...easyjet to Bonn...£50 return....so, whos been there and would you recommend it ? Any nice cheap hotels with balconies overlooking the Rhine which dont cost more than 50Euro a night to tell us about? :)

any good websites would be a start ....

Go to Munich. Lovely place. Been a fair few times and loads to do. Went to Salzburg for the day on train (double decker :D) last time I was there (Sept 2009) for approx 35 euros for 4 adults, that's for all 4 us and not each by the way. Also did Garmisch-Partenkirten for the day and up the ski lift to the top of the resort and Lindau on Lake Constance. The train tickets are Bavaria tickets or summat like that and you can use any of the local trains after 9.30am upto the following morning and all of the trams, buses, underground in Munich city. Lindau is approx 200 miles from Munich, try doing that distance in the UK on train for that price! Then there's the beer, I like the Dunkels! :smt030

Went to Munich last year too, but only a quick break to see Springsteen in concert, so we didn't see much of Munich. But airport is good, with U Bahn trains running regularly to the HauptBahnhof (Central stataion). Get a family ticket, saves a load of money, even if there's only 2 of you, don't forget to punch it in the little machine on the platform BEFORE you get on the train.

Plenty to do and see around Munich, museums, beer. Take a sightseeing bus (rundfahrt!).

Our hotel was a cheapie 2 mins walk from Hauptbahnhof, so views weren't good, but food was excellent & quite quiet. I booked it through Expedia and read the ratings before I booked it.

Normally we stay with family in Germany, but none of ours lived near Munich.

Colonge is good too, especially during the Christmas market time, but plenty of things to do there.

Plenty of big shops in Munich too

Can't help with places to stay and all that but just wanted to say I LOVE GERMANY!!!
Lived there for about 9 years of my life, absolutely love it!!!

Koln (cologne) is the nearest city I lived near, very nice city but I suspect Bonn or Munich might offer more.

As an Englishman who is trying to learn German... in New Zealand, I envy you!

Germany's a great place. Dunnno about Bonn/Koln but Munich is very nice. Check Lufthansa because depending when you're going, they often do tickets for £100 return each, and that includes your luggage, cup of tea, everything (unlike Ryanair and the others where the basic price barely gets you a seat). £50 sounds like a good price as long as it's including everything.

Lufthansa sale is usually on around now. Ours return from Manchester to Munich were less than £100 return when we went last Sept.

We went with Easyjet. Stanstead - Munich

Trouble with Ryan Air flights to Colonge or elsewhere in Germany, is you always have a long bus ride to the city, which always adds to the cost and hassle.

Jouney on the Ubahn was 20mins?

Bizzarly, today I found the hotel card in my bedside drawer.

+1 for Munich, lived there for 5 years, its great. Englisher garten near universitat, happy days :smt119

Berlin would be a good option before the difference between east & west disappears. Had a touring holiday round there a few years ago, Berlin - the lakes at Weslow - Dresden, We went on to prague before back to Munich.
Hotels were cheap & good (by UK standards).
