Any suggestions/methods used for cleaning chain lube etc off back wheel. I bought some muc-off and wasn't particularly impressed. Any household cleaners (d.i.y)/cheapskate options that you have found work well ??

cheapest way is Mr Sheen. Next cheapest way is WD40. Both work extremely well. Just spray on rag first, no good getting on your tyres.

Expensive way, but can clean the rest of your bike is SDoc100.

i use abit of gunk on a rag to keep away from the moving parts and the chain....strips it right off in seconds.

Paraffin. Even cheaper than WD40 and does a super job!

Me too - cheap, effective and won't damage anything. Like most things you might use as a cleaner keep it off the tyres.

I use the cheap WD40 wannabe from Morrisons, it's the same stuff, but for 99p a can its a bargain. Spray it on a rag.

Finally got round to cleaning bike today after using daily regardless of weather. Used WD40 on wheels (rear absolutely covered in old lube, brake dust etc). Amazed at how easy WD on a rag cleans wheels. Have used WD40 for many things over the years accept for cleaning. Was buying muc-off for wheels etc, but at 4 times the price its not a patch on WD. Happy days....:p
Thanks for all the advice given.

I'm afraid you're all still using stuff that is too expensive (even Morrison's own brand WD40). Paraffin = c80p per litre, cleans pretty much anything off of anything* and heats your greenhouse, lights your camping lamps and makes you smell like you remember your grandpas shed used to smell. (unless your grandpa's shed used to smell of anything other than paraffin)

Try it and then laugh at anyone daft enough to buy muck-off and the like :)

Cheers,
Mark (the paraffin marketing board)

*eg,
Lube off wheels, tar spots off anything, sticky residue left by balance weights, over zealous grease off areas around greased bolts, your bicycle chain, tar stuck to your feet if you go in the sea, brake dust off your car alloys etc etc etc. Also tends not to leave a nasty residue like some other stuff.

i use car body polish what i "borrow" from work for free:wink: just put on a rag like everyone said to avoid getting it on tyres or brakes.

I've got an 03 pointy, same colour as yours . Have been using WD40 appplied with a sponge, removes chain lube with minimal effort then, washed off with soapy water, has worked well on EVERY type of chain lube i've used (Have tried them all). Paint finish on wheels has not deteriorated due to it's use, give it a try...

WD40 for chain lube on rear wheel and then SDoc100 on everything else.

Muc off is fine for general washing of a bike but to get **** off the wheels, just use some polish or a can of de-greaser.
