Don't worry Mr Fizzwheel, I'm not about to ask for advice of what type of tyres to get ;)

My MOT is due very soon, and I was planning to take it in to be done one of the days next week...however I'm not sure if it will be an automatic failure because of the tyres*

They've plenty of thread left but, the front one has the seemingly customary Conti-cracks as mentioned in this thread (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=154526). I'm not totally sure that they are getting worse, but would this be classed as a fail for MOT purposes?

To add to the problem, the rear tyre is plugged. It was one of those 'temporary' plugs that actually last for ages (it's been there for 6 months without any problems). I did look to get it replaced with a permanent plug, but the puncture is just a tiny smidgen inside the cross-hatching that denotes the sidewall, so it couldn't be 'properly' repaired.

To complicate further, I have my MOTs done at the same place I get my tyres...so they may well remember that they refused to replace the plug. :D

I've done a fair amount of searching to try to find out what the actual check is for the MOT, but I'm still none the wiser.

*Please save any energy that you were going to use to say stuff like "Are you stupid, you really should get new tyres asap...blah, blah, blah". I know I need new tyres, I also know I'll need around £200 at the same time, and getting that £200 before the MOT is due is the problem.

Take it to the guys you usually use and if they fail it take it to a more sympathetic MOT station. Every area has one, you just need to ask about a bit.

as Lozzo.

race cans and my local main dealer have an interesting relationship with heat proof tape

Thanks guys, I think you've confirmed what I was thinking - it's one of those things that one place may allow, and another may not.

I think I'll just go in and ask one of them to tell me if they would fail it on that if they will, I'll just have to park the bike up for a couple of weeks until I can get it done all in one go.

Mind you, when they did my MOT previously, I was standing outside having a ciggie and asked how it was going. One of the mechanics said, "Your lights point the wrong way, which is a fail". I said, "oh ****, how much will that cost me to fix". He replied, "Nothing, we've stuck some tape on them" :D

For a tyre to fail (in realtion to cuts and cracks etc)
ANY cord exposed
or
A cut (cracks etc included) deep enough to reach the ply or cords in excess of 25mm

NO fail criteria for repairs to tyres unless its exposing cords

Well I popped over to Essential Rubber this afternoon to ask their opinion of whether my tyres would pass or fail. Jane (in her own inimitable style) said something along the lines of, "Those cracks aren't an issue, and the plug in the rear wouldn't cause a fail. What will cause a fail is the fact that both your tyres are knackered".

Er...maybe I should look closer at tread depth from time to time...:-dd

Ah well, I start my new job next week (and have to travel by tube for the first week at least) so I'll just park the bike up after the weekend and leave it until I can pay for the tyres and MOT all in one go.

As an aside, for anyone else that uses ER (in North London) for MOTs, although they do not normally book any MOTs in advance, if your MOT is overdue, you can ring them and they will book you in (in case you get stopped on the way there).

He he. I like Jane. I like them all in fact. I like them so much I go well out of my way to go there for my essential rubbers.

Silly, silly goat.

Indeed, they are a nice bunch there, and I'll be there in the morning (or a bit later in fact) for a new rear on the superduke.

Cheers Mark.
