View Full Version : How much less is a Cat D worth?
Hello all. My bike was written off a few days ago, after someone knocked me off it. Its a 2002 Curvy and prior to being written off, was a near immaculate 18k FSH bike, in pearl yellow. I've got the bike coming back as I want to take a few bits off it, especially my private plate.
Its been written off due to the cost. Apparently the frame is scratched, and the insurance company will only replace it, not repair it. I hadn't noticed the scratch, so I don't think its that bad. The garage did confirm that the bike was still straight and that apart from the broken brake pedal and footrest, nothing else was actually needed on the bike (excluding the scratched fairings and bar-ends). However, I know what the bike was worth previously and was curious as to how much less it'll be worth as a result of it being a Cat D. I have pics of all the damage caused.
Possibly the wrong forum, but can anyone advise?

Next to no difference of a bike that age if the rest of the damage is fixed.

Well, some people will steer clear of it or try use it as a bargaining tool when sell time comes, I'm sure of that.
Saw it recently - a colleague was looking at buying an immaculate M3, right price etc...as soon as the guy mentioned cat D, sale was off.
I'm not saying that is right, but some people are just veeery cautious when it comes to buying vehicles 2nd hand.

i knock 25-35% of what id normally pay
I can live with that. When i've got it all done and my plate is off, i'll try and sell it.

£25 - £35 of then seeing as its a curvy
just be honest, and when you advertise, use the phrase "low price to reflect cat d status"... even if it's not that cheap, but once you've said it, it is so ;)
As Razor said!
If its noticeably cheaper say 15 to 20% you'll get interest in the bike when you show the prospective buyer the photos of the damage I dont think many would be put off!
However some Insurance companies wont insure previously written off vehicles as I found out the hard way after buying a car which i didnt HPI check, Never again!

my mate got his sv written off. when he bought it back form the garage he found that it wasnt recorded. Check if this happens to you first. give it a while and then check! however if you sell it or trade it in then i feel you should be honest about the bikes history!
Theres bugger all damage to it in the scheme of things. I've bought everything i've needed for £120, other than having the scratched fairings repainted.
This is it, after the accident! Not much visible damage, other than the cracked lower fairing, scratched uppers and the snapped pedal. I've not even noticed the frame scratch that they were on about, but they confirmed the frame was still straight and not bent. It shouldn't be after only dropping it at about 20mph.

I'll wait until its all fixed up and my plate is off, then i'll probably sell it. Not sure whether i'll bother repainting the fairings, due to the cost so I may just remove the lowers and repair them, and touch up the top bits.
Doesn't look too bad at all - I don't suppose you have got any bigger pictures have you? ;-)
I copied them off a forum that uses the same forum software as this. However, it resizes them on that one!
