Dunno if this is s a bit forward of me seeing as I is new..... but hey:rolleyes:!

Depart from Basingstoke Leisure park at 10:00am for a Tour of some of the White Horses. Map (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Churchill+Way+W%2FB3400&daddr=B4494+to:A4361+to:Trowbridge+Rd%2FA350+to:Gr een+Drove+to:Unknown+road+to:A4361+to:Charnham+St% 2FA4+to:Unknown+road+to:B3400+to:51.264708,-1.116142&geocode=FVg8DgMd7v_u_w%3BFdmlEgMdsqvq_w%3BFSKhEQMd Vunj_w%3BFZBFDgMd-Lre_w%3BFepJDwMdgA7l_w%3BFZ6zDwMdcMrj_w%3BFeyVEQMd RuXj_w%3BFYiWEAMdhNno_w%3BFUtKDgMde-jm_w%3BFYJ8DQMdZgTr_w%3B&hl=en&mra=mi&mrcr=8&mrsp=10&sz=13&via=1&sll=51.259766,-1.119576&sspn=0.077345,0.10849&ie=UTF8&ll=51.443737,-1.768799&spn=1.23258,1.73584&z=9)

Its 170 miles and will take approx 6-7 hours including lunch and stops. Dependant on numbers, I anticipate using the second rider drop off system. This means the ride is suitable for all levels of expirience as there is no pressure or need to keep up. However the pace will be spirited at times so not 125 friendly.

I'm in, unless it's forecast to be pi$$ing it down all day, or I've got off my **** to the extent of starting, but not finishing, my valve clearances.

Might as well go the whole hog and have road captains in fluoro tabards.

It's tempting, but I'll be in Belgium collecting a special crate of beer.

Westvleteren?

As for the ride, I could be around for that. Which way are you heading from Basingstoke? Could I join you at Wantage?

Stig
23-08-10, 07:56 AM
I could also be interested in this. Although also not starting from Basingstoke as I live in Bradford On Avon. I need to check the date again as I can't remember if this is a weekend I have my kids or not. If I am free, I'm in. I can recommend the Beef & Barge Pub in Bradford on Avon for a lunch stop.

You should take everything that you read from ogden with a pinch of salt.

Westvleteren?

The very same.

A mate in Brussels picked a couple of crates up from the brewery and I've been meaning to collect my share for a while. Almost a year and a half, in fact.

Still, I'm led to believe it gets better with age.

I figured ;) Is Foxy interested in the run too? I have, as you know, a fond love (not THAT kind of love!) for the Ninja 250!! :-D

Wah wah wah.

I remain a firm supporter of the "keep up or **** off" approach to group rides.

Not my fault you lot couldn't keep up with a little old 250. ;)

I'm not sure if we will both be able to attend or not. But one of us should be there. If I have my kids then Lisa can go and I'll baby sit her boys. If I don't have my kids, then I'll be attending and hopefully we can get someone to look after the boys for a few hours. :)

Is this ride on, come rain or shine?

I have only been riding since May and I've never done a group ride before and I was thinking of tagging along. I'd like to think I'm not slow, but I'm definitely not that quick either. When you say spirited.. would the pace be suitable for a novice?

Isnt that the one on the way into Weymouth, that is facing away from Weymouth, that P*ssed King George off?

Quite fancy this ride out, should be there as long as its not horrific weather.

Yes this will on whatever the weather.

Yes this ride is suitable for novices. It will be great to see you Sunday:D.

If you don't ride slightly beyond your abilities, how are you going to learn?

I really, really, REALLY hope you just forgot to put a smiley on the end of the above phrase ?

No-one should EVER be encouraged to ride beyond their abilities - the potential for disaster not only for them but for those around them is too great !

Ability increases with experience - at whatever rate is natural for the individual concerned - it should never be forced (perhaps on the track it might be ok to 'push' it a bit but not on the road).

I totally agree! I was just trying to gauge what a spirited pace was in Andy's view, I'd rather not make it a step to far. :)

Group riding tips

# Do not try to ride beyond your capabilities or what feels uncomfortable to you just to keep up. The leading pack will stop periodically to allow bikes at the back to catch up and re-join the main group (if they think the gap is getting too big).

bobw1985 hope this helps..

Careful now, if you take that kind of pansy thinking to its logical conclusion you end up wth road captains and a marker system.

Don't bother turning up to any of the rideouts I organise then - 'cos I ALWAYS run a touchy-feely, 'pansy' marker system !! :p

FYI - a marker system is actually the best way to ride when you have people of differing levels of ability - the TEC ensures that everyone can ride at a pace at which they feel comfortable and at the same time ensuring that no-one gets left behind.

I can only assume that you have no wish to ride with anyone 'below' your level in case they (God forbid) hold you up?

Don't have one of those - sorry.

I'm puzzled though as to how your rideouts are actually organised ?

Assuming for one moment that by Road Captain you mean ride leader (and BTW the only clubs I know that use the term RC are the 'chopper' 'patch' clubs - something you'd like to share wish us ??) then yes, the rideouts I organise always have one, along with a Tail-End-Charlie. If yours don't - and I can only assume by your sarcasm that you don't - how do you manage the ride?

Do you just say "here's where we are, here's where we're going, these are the roads I intend to take, I'll see you there?"

Kind of bizarre really !!
