Unbelievable, out of pure boredom i switched carb slides today back to full power, i know i shouldnt, but i was so bored.
I can not believe how much faster it accelerates, what the hell happens at 6k/7k then! lol. I can barely keep the front wheelie down! so easy to do huge wheelies.
I was lost for words when i got off! What the hell is an R1 like!!!!
Ill be putting them back in tomorrow, only another 9 months left.
That will be a tough 9 months
I got till 31st october and thats taking long enough :(

Be careful is my advise, its a different bike, dont do what i did and accelerate full throttle like i do at 33bhp, well not the first time lol.
Yesterday me and a friend were racing of the lights, he was on a zr7, until we hit 60mph it was neck and neck even with me at 33bhp!!!(might be him being a big girl) im gonna blow him away next time i see him. Iwas trying to get him to come out today, the chicken.
....Listen to me, what am i turning into, damn its addictive.

Funny that, I too thought double the power output would have felt the same.....

All the good stuff cones at bout 7.5 rpm. I by think I cld of ever done the 33 bhp test

I have no idea how the idea that it doesn't make much difference could have started.
Probably some people riding like Grandmas on the 33 bike then using same amount of throttle on the 70 one.

Plenty of people do say it, even on here. I had only ridden unrestricted once b4 when collecting it, i disagreed then with no big bike riding experience, now i can ride, the difference seems even bigger.
Hhmm maybe mine is restricted then. It doesn't feel that much quicker than the ER-5 I learnt on. Maybe it's just me getting used to the power... It's quick enough but isn't exactly an animal. I have pulled a wheelie twice, one on my first day out on it and a week later when i overtook a car in 1st doing about 35MPH I snapped the throttle back because I thought I was in 2nd lol.
Top end seems to be about 110 then struggles like **** to get anything more, so I've heard...

That's one of my two theories.
The second is a chinese whisper like goings on with the "sv is a good bike to restrict" statement.

Oh it is a good bike to restrict, just only using half the throttle travel certainly makes a bike feel different!
Plus people saying it makes no difference up to 80(or insert number here) mph. Open the throttle off the lights then you fannies.

sounds like it is restricted m8.

If it wheelies and wheelspin easily id say it is full power, restricted it accelerates slower and slower the faster you go, after 60 is pathetic.
The most obvious thing is at 7k, when restricted nothing happens lol.

Too right mate, its so addictive, huge difference in everyway if you actually open it up :D

Just to settle this - I have a full license (unrestricted) and have just bought my missus an SV650S K9 Sport (The full faired one with the white racing stripe. As she has a 33bhp license I bought the ECU restrictor kit and the insurance company asked for the certificate. We don't have this so I took it to have a dyno test. ****ing hell the power is retarded, I have ridden it with the original ECU and it's a *BIG!!!* difference. I can however confirm you can wheelie it with ease at 33bhp, but you need to clutch it up, get it to about 5k then slip the clutch, open the throttle and drop it - if your thinking about what your doing and pressure up on the gear select after you release the clutch and wait for the rev limiter it clicks into second and you can feather the throttle and keep the bike up for ages.
Shay.Kelsey
08-11-10, 01:27 AM
BTW: there are 2 types of restrictor - one by FI International which restricts the throttle and air flow and the genuine suzuki ECU restrictor which allows full revs and throttle control but remaps the Air/Fuel mixture
yorkie_chris
08-11-10, 10:43 AM
Genuine one restricts air using the STV system, you can't just restrict fuel as it would run like a bag of sh*t... it keeps mixture same but gives same effect as if you didn't open the throttle all the way.
FI int. kit OTOH tries to restrict air by washers without control over fuelling... which makes them run rich.

put it this way. ive heard stories of alot of the R1s when they first came out going back to have them lengthened slightly on the swinging arm due to people flipping them at traffic lights too easily.
personally i dont think anyone on the road "needs" a bike with anything like the power of an r1, theyre like missiles with a saddle and alot of the power is wasted cos its just not usable off the track. even then ive seen a tt rider (john mcguiness i think though not sure) actually lap his 600 quicker than he did the 1000 at olivers mount near scarborough

Well its definately going to be my next bike, i want it for the acceleration rather than top speed. The lengthened swing arms look good.

I've got a graph somewhere of just how terrible the throttle slides make the power curve. My SV700 managed just short of 35BHP on the slides that beabert now has.
Its a shame I don't have the curves back to back but IIRC the initial portion was unchanged so if you never rev it you'd never notice.

Yep i agree, its after 6k ish it all happens with them out.

I have never ridden a restricted bike and to be honest cannot understand why people do?
My L plate riding went something like :-
FS1E, D10, D14, C15, Hustler, followed by a GT750, GS850 and a Moto Martin CBX. I never felt the need to get a bigger bike and somehow cut its nuts off.
So why apart from a stupid law do kids pay over the odds for a bigger bike, therefore higher insurance grouping etc and then strangle the poor thing. Surely they would be better off on a small 4/500 type bike and learn how to ride for two years then get a full power bike.
Better still though get rid of all the motorcycle learner/young rider laws. A single route for all, probably based on DAS, but that means you cannot ride alone on L plates.
yorkie_chris
12-11-10, 03:58 PM
4/500s are still over 33bhp
They are also suicidal on the motorway, rare, no cheaper to insure etc.
Plus buying bikes <33bhp is expensive for what you get, it's better to run about on a restricted bike for a bit.
You think anyone feels the need to get a big bike and cut it's nuts off? It's just the bullsh*t you're lumbered with if you're <21 and want a bike you can actually use.

Well i put them back in today for two reasons.
1. To be legal on the road again.
2. The weather, Im less likely to spin the back wheel (Im very throttle happy usually)
It works, changes my riding style, its so slow theres no point riding like before.

I always used to nail it out of work when it was cold to warm the rear tyre up, it would spin up and then slide as I backed off.
Put a smile on my face every day, although what wasn't as amusing was another rider high siding after doing pretty much the same thing...

That was a bonus, i bet that was the most boring 20 metres of your biking career lol.

I can imagine, im quite throttle happy too, so its just as well my sv is in the shed until the end of feb.
Ive never ridden a restricted bike, but even 2 years on still get a grin when I crack open the throttle, the bike can still amaze me at times.:p
I lasted about a month, as long as you stick by 'theres a time and a place' moto you wont become a statistic. The throttle stop is now a keyring and the washers are in the bin. I love the sv and the way it makes power...i just hate it when im with all my mates on il4's and they **** off to 170 (mudafukas).

The op must weigh similar to a bag of sugar, cos my sv wouldnt even hint at lifting the front wheel ;)
You would have to be light i think for the sv to wheelie off the throttle, even my sprint wont albeit the front goes lighter.

Its bloody awful even dangerous going back to 33bhp, i tried an over take today than would have been no probs at full power, had to cancel it because of the fast approaching vehicle behind lol, what a wally.

Still got over a year on the 33BHP, so wish I could have afforded to go the DAS route.
However, 33BHP is still enough to scare me. Riding home from work training in Chippenham yesterday, back wheel span on on a slimy road pulling onto a roundabout. My back wheel went sideways and my bottom tried to bite a chunk out of the seat!
My 400cc XJ is a fun little bike, unrestricted it produces 31BHP (we have a Dyno test to prove it for the insurance) which sounds like it should be slow. However, it pulls like a train from sixty to eighty, snapping my head back with the acceleration and will keep going to about a tonne.
I had not ridden a IL4 before this and am quite interested in what the SV will feel like once it has the love blobs set free. That feeling of going whoosh on the 30 year old XJ is going to be even better on the seven year old unrestricted SV.
Only another sixteen months to go... :-(

Chin up girl- you're still getting loads of road experience.
And full power is going to make you grin and giggle like a child! 400XJ or SV!!

By the time my restriction comes off, it will be early summer 2012, just in time to enjoy the dry roads. Until then, I have another summer of gentle over taking to look forwards to.

I'm always amused by suggestions that 33 or less suddenly makes a bike dangerous.
Problem certainly aint the bike but sounds like some folks have quite bad observational/decision making skills on a bike. Doubt 60bhp(or what it is the full power SV650 makes) on it's own, would make some of those who complain the most, better, safer or even faster rider.
Yup, I'm owned bikes from 11bhp onwards. Never felt they were dangerous but that is not to say, there's never been a situation when I'd thought "hmm, would have been nice to have a bit more , right now" .
Oh and yesterday, I rode an SV650 and you know what, I would have been faster on my 125....but that's another story :D

If you were refering to my post.
Going from 70bhp to 33bhp takes some getting used too, the dangerous part is the few rides transition. Im back in 33bhp power mode now and I prefer it in this weather, not slipped once since.

After my nephew lost his licence (reverts back to a learner when he gets it back) and 18 month ban I had to collect/remove his car and 125 to remove temptation to the brothers unit.
God, riding the 125 was torture, no suspension, no brakes, no guts. Despite it only having just been given a 12 month clean bill of health and ticket I considered it a death trap.
Brothers orders are they have to go, I seriously feel sorry for whoever buys that 125
