View Full Version : Help for MBK's bike please...new parts needed.

Nic parked her shiny spanking new CBR600rr in a parking bay at the back of her station this morning and the tarmac below it collapsed, leaving a big hole and her bike on it's side....after also hitting the wall and a kerb on the way down. Nic can go into more detail later, but that's the basics of it.
So...she needs...
New left hand mirror
new whole tail section
new pillion seat
new R&G crash bung LH
The tail section has taken a bad blow hitting the kerb and is broken, the pillion seat has ripped leather so needs replacing. The crash bung is scuffed, so she wants that replacing as doesn't want a scuffed part on a shiny bike and the left hand mirror needs replacing.
Her station is saying it's her responsibility due to the fact that she should not have parked around the back...despite it being where all people park their bikes and there being parking bays. She has a big excess and knows it'll push her premiums up, so...if anyone can source these parts or if Holdup is about, get quotes as she can't due to being in work....she'd be most grateful!
Thanks peeps :-)

if its in a parking bay they are responsible surely?

She should go seek professional advice about that. I wouldn't stand for that sort of tosh..let alone from a cop shop! They still have a responsibility for maintenance of parking facilities for their employees. Unless of course its from this freak rain.
poor shiny shiny bike :-(

if anyone's going to be able to argue who's responsible for the damage then it'll be the police unfortunately :(
also, public sector is under enough of a squeeze at the mo so they'll do everything they can to avoid this sort of expense :(

Get her to take photos of the hole... it's possible that you may be able to claim against their public liability insurance (assuming they have some...)

Yes Lou....I've told her to pursue it too. I think she's getting the scene of crimes officer to get some proper pictures of it when he comes on shift later.

The issue will be whether or not there is anything they have in writing or as a condition at that station about not parking at the rear of the building. If they do, then they'll be able to argue that Nic parked there at her own risk...however, there are no signs saying no parking and no signs saying you park at your own risk.
Worth pursuing I think.

Problem she has is that its a '10 plate bike, finding cheap spares, is practically zilch. I've a feeling she'll really have to dig her heels in and persue it, as its likely to be very expensive if she tries sourcing them.
I've sent holdup a text cheryl, hopefully he will come back to me.

Sucks ass :(
the land owner will tell you to take it up with who ever was contracted to do the job, but it would be in their intrest also to get it put right so worth pushing them to take it further, not 100% but i gather from what nic said it was newish tarmac? its not been underlayed properly for it to give out under the weight of a bike
gruntygiggles
24-08-10, 11:28 AM
Yes Gav. They did work on it I think before Nic started there, but it is a repaired bit of tarmac.
Thank you Lily, that's very good x

If its that bad, might be worth going through insurance.
Feel for you MBK.

Anyone know how it could/would affect Nics warranty if she got the parts and fitted them herself. Would save her a packet!

I told her James...she's just concerned about warranty. If that won't be affected, it's a no brainer, they are all easy parts to remove/fit. :-)
surrely warranty is more related to the engine etc than the farings?! If it is never noted that things have been changed then it never needs to be known by anybody?!

Can't possibly affect the warranty unless perhaps she were planning to claim for faults on plastics / paint. I'd be stunned if that were the case.

Nic,do you have legal protection on any of your insurances---house car or bike.
I would be looking down this avenue and claiming against the third party responsible regarding health and safety issues-----what would have happened if it had fallen on a kid.
Your employer has responsibilities for your safety while on their premises surely

Awww bummer, as GG says they will say "parked at your own risk"
I would suggest make the hole bigger, stick the bike in it and get them to tarmac over, say it been nicked :)
Hope you get sorted soon chick xxx

Difference here is that it's an area at the rear of the police station not open to the public. There is a sign on the gate saying, "authorised vehicles only" as I just learned, so not sure where she would stand with that now.
Regarding warranty, agree with comments made, I can't see how replacing plastics couls affect it, but got to be sure.

Shouldnt affect warranty unless the damge was caused due to fitting, but highly unlikey

GG,---Re Authorised vehicles only,[Not POLICE VEHICLES ONLY]common usage by staff? did she have authority to park her bike there,a fair bit of difference in the implication of the signage.
gruntygiggles
24-08-10, 12:49 PM
Not sure Dicky. x
MBK or Cheryl - I'm a car trimmer by trade and still have most of my old tools and equipment. If MBK needs the seat recovering with a new vinyl panel, I can easily do it for the cost of the postage here and back. I have loads of vinyl kicking around and it'll take me 10 minutes to do.
As far as the bodywork goes, there is a fantastic painter near Bolton I know who is very affordable and can do an exact colour and decal match with proper plastic welding you'd never see. He's the son of a friend of mine and all the guys from one of the groups I subscribe to send their bike bits to him. I've seen lots of his work and you can't tell the difference between what he's done and the factory stuff. Drop me a line if you need more info.
R+G will supply bungs separately if required, I have bought them like this myself in the past.
MBK also needs to check the end of the clutch lever and handlebar end to see if they are scuffed - most of the time these bits will polish up or be easily repainted back to original standard. While she's at it she should also check out the footrest hanger on that side, they bend inwards quite easily when they are dropped.
It really shouldn't cost fortunes to put it all back to as it should be, the biggest expense will be getting the tailpiece to as new.
By the way, speaking as service manager of a Kawasaki dealership, this will not affect the warranty on the whole bike, but the tailpiece won't be covered if repaired, nor will the seat if that gets repaired rather than replaced.
robh539

I have heard of R & G sending out free bungs to people if you write to them.

Hope you get it back to shiny shiny as cheaply cheaply as possible.
GG,---Re Authorised vehicles only,[Not POLICE VEHICLES ONLY]common usage by staff? did she have authority to park her bike there,a fair bit of difference in the implication of the signage.
If she, or other staff, have parked there regularly with the knowledge of senior officers does that not mean she, as an employee, is entitled to under a "change of contract."
Tenuous at best but someone who maybe called Ed might be able to shed some light on it.

Like Lozzo, I have the phone number of a really good paint and repair guy near me, it may even be the same one as Lozzo as he is near-ish to Bolton. If you want the number, I'll PM it. Plus, I could meet half way amd drop 'em off if you like.
He's the guy who did my respray and has done several race-reps for Honda UK.
As for the hole, I assume you have a Police Vehicle Collision unit? My car was damaged at work by a Police van and it was repaired by the job insurance. It may be worth phoning up in the morning. They are the one's who will be able to answer if they ar liable.
Pete ;)
I'll try and dig out my pillion seat... someone PM me an address or something :)

Whoever did the resurfacing should have taped off the area until it was ready to use. If they haven't taken reasonable steps to do this then you should be able to claim against their public liability insurance.
If they did tape it and the station removed the tape then surely it's their fault.
If they are aware you all park there and have allowed you to continue then surely you are authorised to park there by default.
Either way it's ****.

Nic, as Lozzo say you could get the panels repaired.
Otherwise try a fairly comprehensive sweep of the breakers/eBay - I've been surprised in the past how many new/VGC panels are available for new sports bikes, especially if you keep your eyes peeled for a few weeks.
Some are due to a write-off accident where only part of the bike was damaged (e.g. front end or RHS only), but there also tend to be some from racers who strip the bike down from new and sell unwanted parts like the bodywork.
Good luck hun!
Nic - you ought to get a quote for a new tailpiece from Honda. Sometimes their panels are surprisingly cheap to buy. When I dropped my Firestorm the complete fairing side panel was about half what I'd paid for a Kawasaki one 5 years previously

Done Lozzo and yes...very reasonable indeed! :-)
If you need the price broken down rather than the lump figure just ask

Extremely true. i picked up a brand new boxed genuine tank for 2009 cbr600rr in green and black (the best colours :-P) for £50 delivered. RRP on this is £600-700 ex VAT. (its just a plastic tank cover). I didnt need it but at that price i had to buy it!
So deffo keep eye out and i guess patience is the key if your after a bargain.
good luck

I don't have any patience unfortunately. Think I will just get the parts order, suck it up and get on with it (that's what she said).
I will, if I can be bothered, get pics of the damage tomorrow.
Still totally gutted about the whole thing.
Noticed today that the gouges across the tail are all the way through. Twonking thing. It's not cracked, just gouged the plastic deeply. It hit the corner of a pebble dashed wall on the way down. Soooooooo gutting.
