View Full Version : Lubing the chain with no centre-stand?

Might be a stupid question, but my last bike had a centre stand which made cleaning / lubing the chain quite simple because you could just turn the back wheel and move the chain round.

How do you lube the chain on a bike with only a side stand, other than just wheeling it backwards and forwards.

I would quite like it if the answer wasn't just 'get a scott oiler'.

Thanks

abba stand ;) you can do both ends then (with the aid of one of those cr&p car jacks)

Stretchie showed me a way where you pull the bike back onto its side stand and balance it there. Second person then needed to turn the rear wheel and lube the chain. Not ideal for cleaning as the bloke who is holding the bike isn't ideally placed.

So - what others said...paddock stand.

Either TBH, paddock stand, or you can lift the bike onto the sidestand. Or roll it.

take bike for a ride with chain lube balanced between your legs, while riding along put chain lube in right hand then point at rear sprocket and press squirter. easy

Any or all of the above lol!

Just wondering peeps, will the bike fail it's MOT if the chain moves on the rear sprocket a little, but not enough so it can come off? Just my MOT is in a day or two and my chain hasn't arrived yet, and should have...

Depends on tester

Thought it would, hopefully he's fine with it, seeing as my chain should have arrived by now.
Plus it's the weed 125's first MOT, benefit of the doubt I say? Lol

1. Place bike on side stand.
2. Clean/lube chain that is visable.
3. Hold handle bar with left hand & grab rail with right, then lean back till rear wheel off ther ground, use right foot to rotate rear wheel.
4. Repeat from 2. till chain cleaned & lubed.

When you get fed up of this palaver buy an Abba stand and do the job in a 1/10th of the time.

regards to chain and mot, i think he will just look at chain/sprocket wear and also the amount of adjustment left, probly give an advisory at most.

Top tip.

If you wheel the bike to lube it, wheel the bike backwards.

Wheeling forwards give the stand a chance to catch and move up towards the bike ever so little, and you wont notice until you go to drop the bike on its stand but instead the stand folds back up.

Learnt the hard way...

This is my method but its a two man job.
I stand by the stand of my bike with my thigh into the seat then reach over the other side of the bike and lift the rear up by the pillion right peg or rear frame. I ALSO make sure I'm pulling the front brake lever to stop it from moving.
So stood left side reach over to the right and lift up onto the stand using it as a pivot. My body is then preventing the bike falling. Whilst in the air your second person can then spin the rear wheel and lube the chain.
Get them to be a little hasty as the bikes not that light!

Belt drive conversion, no chain required.

Seriously, get a paddock or abba stand

before i got a paddock stand i used to use a piece of 3 by 2 wood about a foot long, this is a one man job and dead easy,
1. stand on the left side of the bike and lift the bike on the sidestand towards you
2. then place the block of wood under the swingarm at the back on the right side of the bike and on the floor, jus wedge it in,

thats it really, it props the bike up just enough to spin the wheel while you lube the chain, its quite sturdy too

While lifting the bike like that via the side stand, how on earth do you get a block of wood under the wingarm as well? While holding the bike up?

you wedge it in, hold there with your right foot and as you lift you slide it into place with your right foot, so it doesnt just fall over but no its not safe enough to clean and lube the chain for me so i clean and push the bike forward then clean more and puch the bike around so i get it cleaned.

Ironically I received my paddock stands only yesterday, purchased Tuesday! Great service and I would recommend the seller. This (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Pair-Front-Rear-Motorbike-Motorcycle-Paddock-Stands-/230422448055?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts) is the pair of stands I bought.

Let me know how the build is on these please...I had been looking at these also.

I want an abba stand but moola dictates that if I want a stand of any kind soon I'm better off with a normal paddock stand.

With my track history, I am a bit worried about keeping the bike upright with one hand though, while operating with a normal paddock stand

They seem awesome! Really solid, qulity build.

I would recommend it mate. At £35 for the pair, you can't go wrong! Most places would sell just a rear stand for that price (heck, I've even seen the (D/st)ealers sell them at £60 for just the rear). It helps so much - even things like removing the front- and rear-wheel to take it to get a tyre fitted (unless you can do it yourself), taking the whole bike to the mechanics will gost an extra £30 for them to remove the wheel .

I'm now considering my next purchase (http://www.busters-accessories.co.uk/productInfo.aspx?catRef=EVG2&kw=vacuum+gauges).

Check out these..http://cgi.ebay.es/AIO-CABALLETE-DELANTERO-TRASERO-SUZUKI-GSXR-GSX-R-1000-/200482709689?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_186&hash=item2eadb360b9#ht_2181wt_1144

They come from Germany and do fit the SV - you will need a pair as you cannot lift the front without the rear - front ones have a spigot that locks into the bottom of the forks. Very sturdy and easy to use by one person. Only €2 extra for the second item.
