I came back from my regular work trip to Edinburgh this week with a Bank of Scotland £5.

So, at Tescos in Southampton on Saturday, I bought a couple of bits that came to just under a fiver, the conversation went like this:

Cashier: That is £4.50 please

Me: Do you take scottish fivers (having been in banking for 25 years I knew they would...)

Cashier: Oh, I don't know, I'll just check

Cashier 2: I think so but I am not sure

Supervisor 1: I think so, ask supervisor 2

Supervisor 2: Yes we do, but only if they have sterling on them

Bloody good job I didn't have one of them tartan euro notes then :p

We convinced a colleague at work that they had converted to the Euro in Wales.

He felt a right plank when he went to the bar in the hotel near Swansea and said 'Do you accept sterling' :p

Sounds like a good 'Dom Jolly' wheeze to set a Bureau de Change at the Welsh & Scottish borders :p See how many folk come up and ask you to change their money :p

That's good of them. Establishments in England and Wales are not required to accept Scottish / Northern Irish notes, even if they do say Sterling on them.

who told you that sh!te. are we going to start the 'stuff yer notes up yer' crap again?

as far as i was led to believe we all stay in the United Kingdom.

edit: yes the BOE say its not legal tender in England but neither is BOE notes legal tender in Scotland so it works both ways, hence why the banks have an 'agreement' to take each others tender.

Why did you even ask? I'd just have handed it over, they'd have been none the wiser.

it used to pi$$ me off no end when english people would ask for "real money" in their change when I worked at Annandale Water. My response invariably depended on my mood.

I live in Glasgow but am originally from Manchester. None of the shops round where my folks live accept Scottish notes. It's true that they can legally reject them and the shops say it's too hard to keep track of the designs which means its easier to forge them. I mist admit, they do love their bank note designs up here!!

Banks having the agreement doesn't mean that shops have to accept them. I regularly visit NI, which means I end up with NI notes. Trying to spend them back in England is hardwork/impossible lately.

When Halifax and Bank of Scotland merged there was uproar in Scotland at the thought that they might not be able to print their own notes. It might still happen as the cost to do so is pretty high. I don't think people up here lime the thought of seeing the Queen on their notes though....!

and that's what's wrong with the UK. separatism.

I love all things British but as an Englishman in Scotland I can tell you that it's not generally the case for the locals. Lots of national pride!

That's what I did at the first petrol station in Wales on the way to the AR.

Took me a while to figure out why the guy asked his supervisor "do we take these"?

Didn't have a problem after that.

unfortunately there are a lot of places down here that will not accept scottish notes. whenever we come back from a trip up north we always either spend the money at the services or pay into the bank. Our local petrol station wont accept any scottish notes, neither will primark in woking, mcdonalds and burger king in guildford wont take scottish £20 notes. we were up visiting relatives last week and I was amazed at the new clydesdale notes, only been down here 2 years but I had never seen them before, they dont look like real money

It's a bloody joke. We should start refusing BOE notes. Considering all the bloody banks own each other now...ie HBOS + Lloyds TSB, Santander/Abbey so on an so forth, you would think they would just make all sterling notes legal tender throughout the UK!

When I am in England and hand over say a £10 Scottish note, I usually say that it is worth 12 English ones.
One day someone will believe this and give me extra change.

I think the main problem is that all the banks in Scotland produce their own notes whereas BOE have one note. The clydesdale bank notes always attract attention down here, they do look fake. Im not saying its right but you cant expect wee shop assistants to recognise every note from different banks in Scotland, it would be nice if they did, but expecting too much I suspect

I can sympathise. I regularly get paid in Scottish 50's and 100's. Try spending those puppies south of the border!

Impossible and I always end up taking them to the bank and changing to English notes. Quite good exchange rates! :)

Some of the Scottish notes now are very Eurolike and I've had quite a few shop keepers tell me they don't take Euros. :)

Work it to your advantage folks. Go for dinner, offer scottish notes if they refuse you can leave having offered to pay for your meal / service and been refused.
Also getting more difficult now but if you can get £1 notes you can generally pass them off as fivers south o border ;)

Sorry but yes it does. been there done that.
Refused my offer of payment, So I wrote my name and address down for them to take me to small claims if they wanted (never did) They called local cops who told them to accept my cash or write off the meal as they would not be sending anyone round.

Happend a second time but when they realised i was going to leave they accepted my cash.
