You could use HomePlugs (http://www.avforums.com/forums/networking/731564-homeplug-faq.html) such as these Solwise 85Mbps Adaptors (Twin Pack) (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002XL6IUU/).

You could get a wireless repeater between your room and the router, boosting the signal.

Is the interference enough to stop you buying a cordless phone with two handsets, and keeping one upstairs? You'll need to take it downstairs every now and then to swap it with the one sitting in the charging cradle but not really a big deal is it?

Have you tried changing the channels rather than leaving it on auto?

Hmm Tigersaw beat me to it. Many 'interference' issues can be resolved changing the wi-fi channel on your router.

Erm dual handset systems generally come with charging cradles for each phone so you dont need to do that jiggery-pokery...
David if you want a DECT system, I THINK I still have my old one lying around, and can give it to you next time I see you, or post it.

cable into the room with the wifi or a repeater is the most effective

Try lowest, mid then highest number channel, then try a larger omidirectional aerial, or try just tilting the aerial to about 45 degrees, imagine a fat donut around the aerial, you want the donut facing upstairs.

I've heard of this technology and with a bit of googling have found a product which does what i've heard:
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=46494&C=Froogle&U=46494&T=Module
Basically with this specific product you get two adaptors which plug into a power socket. One plugs into your router, the other into a power socket where you want internet. The output from the 2nd adaptor is probably Ethernet meaning you could plug another router into it (or go from modem into 1st adaptor, then 2nd adaptor to router for wifi).
Did that make sense? Basically it sends internet through your mains power sockets in your house. This can be expanded upon so you can have say 4 of these adaptors dotted around your house. The product above is just one the first ones i found on google, not sure how good it is or the reviews about it so might be worth looking into it further to find the best product, but theres a starting point and reasonably cheap too!!
Hope I helped :)

If DP isn't safe on some bikes, is it a wise move to let him loose on mains electrics ?

try and move box to better location first, a simple telephone extension cable may surfice, look out for solid walls between the box and the target location
wireless repeaters are a bit poo as most of them work with a single radio and so 54mbps (theoretical speed) is halfed to 28mpbs instantly, take off losses and real world speed fluctuations, add in latancy and its poo
also if you can get a wi-fi sniffer (netstumbler) installed on your computer to monitor the airwaves and work out which channel number has the least interfearance and also other boxes sharing the same channel, change config on wireless box to match new found channel
the last thing and the best would be to install a second wireless box but make it wired to the first, set both up with the same password and ssid but on diffrent channels, that means you can roam between them without any real problems, most complicated but best
Try a "n" wifi router instead. They are usually way better than "g" models inside the house.

If you're safe to be let loose with scissors and glue, then you could try this: http://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-WIFI-Antenna-Reception-Booster/
