Upgraded my iPhone from 4.0.0 to 4.0.2 and now it's useless! :(

When I switch it on it shows a picture which tends to suggest it would like to be connected to iTunes. But when i do happens

This is why as soon as my iPhone contract is up I'm jumping ship.
Upgraded from 3.8.1 to 4 and its slow as hell, won't be upgrading to 4.0.2 now then :)

Try doing a search for 'Iphone 3g downgrading' there is lots of info on downgrading from 4 back to 3 but I assume the process must be the same, you should be able to download a 4.0.0 software update from somewhere and then us the info from an old back up. Remember though the phone will revert back to the state it was in when it was backed up so you may lose some texts and contacts.

If however you haven't backed it up and would be starting with a blank iphone I would recommend downloading an older software version 3.8.1 for the 3g as it runs much much better and quicker!!!

My 3GS starting playing up when I updated from 4.0 to 4.0.1, it started running really slow and showed very poor/low reception even when I knew I was in a strong reception area but since I have updated to 4.0.2 everything has sorted itself out, reception levels back to normal (or as they were before anyway) and running speed as quick as it was before

Software update 4.1 is to be released on sept 8th and its main function is to fix the 3G's slowness and put it back to normal

Thank God for that!!!
Apple blatantly did it on purpose though to make old 3G owners think their phone was now obsolete!! But it was ridiculous.
My sister still have the original (i would still have mine if it hadn't set on fire) and we did an AB test of similar functions and hers still out performed mine by a long way.

Thing is Apple are just going to get worse and worse with this now, got to make more profit every year now to keep investors happy so big corporate tactics like this are becoming more and more common.

They have even started bringing out updates for stuff that won't work on my 'old' version of OS X its only 3 years old...hardle dinosaur era is it? Still as quick as it always was too but Apple are forcing it to become obsolete even though it is perfectly adequate.

I only had my iPhone about 3 weeks ago and I have already had it replaced .
It was fine until I installed 4.02, after that it kept saying no service.
I googled the problem and loads of peeps having same fault.
This new one has been better but still getting no service too much. They are sh1te and I won't be having another.
My 5 year old samsung phone gets reception all the time and never let me down.
For an expensive gadget, they are rubbish.

Their entire OS X Leopard system costs a whole £25... so they probably assume that most people would have upgraded to it...

unlike Windows who charge like £200+ for basic Windows 7, and then a further £100 for upgrades for it....

an entire Operating System for £25 is worth having every day of the week

So, after all that Apple bashing ;)

How do I get my phone to work? Don't think it's necessarily a problem with the upgrade. It just needs a simple refresh/restore or whatever it's called but I don't know how to do that.

plug the iPhone into your computer, go to iTunes, click on iPhone in the side panel, and then click on restore

it should then restore it to either a backup, or its original state

Edit: and I disagree about them being rubbish.... I have 4.0.2 and it's working perfectly fine for me, only place i lose reception is my friends' house, and in work, but that's always been the case as those two places are like nuclear bunkers.

Apple revolutionised the phone, and as some may be coming out with stuff Apple doesn't have, they all have taken the idea Apple had and added wee things in. Well done Apple :)

Have you held down top button and home button, keep holding them down even when it says slide to off. This is a proper reboot or what I was told to do when I rang the gits.

I call this thread the " Abditive Pathetic Programs Labile Ecocide " of Apple products.
Or in otherwords " what do you expect from apple ". ;-)

Oh I thought you had done so and it wasn't working.

Plug your phone into your computer and let iTunes start up, it should then tell you that it has recognised an iPhone in recovery mode. It'll probably want to reload the the entire software again. If it doesn't return to normal just wait until the 8th of Sept and the 4.1 version will be out and it should work again then :)

Errr no it doesn't.

The upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard costs £25
The upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard costs £132

I have tiger. If I wanted to upgrade to Leopard when it first came out I would have had to stump up nearly £100. Leopard only came out about a year after buying my laptop.

done that
done that
it doesn't appear

hmmm never had that happen...

I assume you have already done the holding in the home button and the standby button?

I would have mentioned that first but as it's the standard for resetting Apple devices I assumed you would have tried it already...

hold both in for around 5 seconds, and it will reset itself, but not erase your data.

Yes it did that and it didn't find the software & I t defaulted to not asking me again so it doesn't do it again.

Can't wait til the 8th as it doesn't recognise iPhone is plugged in so it wont upgrade :(

crap, ignore my last post there...
it should work from when the phone is on, in your case with the iTunes picture.... holding both in for a good 5 seconds at least should make the spinning wheel appear and then it resets...

otherwise get onto the Apple store and get an appointment booked at the Genius Bar... if you have an Apple store near you.

Ahh yes, apologies there, I completely forgot about Tiger software, as you mentioned 3 years and mine is just short of 3 and came with Leopard.

Once it’s off, press and hold the “Home” button and plug your iPhone into a Mac or PC with iTunes installed. Keep holding the “Home” button until you see a dock cable pointing to the iTunes icon. iPhones running older software will display a yellow triangle and text which says “Please Connect to iTunes”. Once you see this image, you can release the Home button. http://www.iphonealley.com/files/images/imce/iphone_recovery_mode.jpg
iPhone in Recovery Mode
Open iTunes (if it’s not already open) and you will be told that “iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.”

Tried that, didn't work. TBH it was just the same as the first time it was in recovery mode - I connected itto iTunes - it searched for software - didn't find it and that was that, no more help :(
