Thinking of getting a tracking device. Not sure how good they are. My friend has his car stolen and found coz of the tracker. Anyone got one? Is it worth it?

I would imagine that most stolen bikes are broken fairly quickly and the tracker would be found and removed/destroyed. either that or some joy rider has ragged it round a field and set it on fire so its not going to do much good there either. would spend the money on something to make the bike harder to take in the first place personally.
I would say that unless you really want one or your insurance co requires one, then i woulndt bother. They aint cheap to run. You have to pay a monthly payment on most plus the unit, and fitting and a set up fee etc. The money it costs would balance out if your bike was stolen and you claimed, and the increased premium.

I am seriously looking at a cheap ebay £45 device (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Original-Thinpax-GSM-GPRS-GPS-Tracker-Car-Charger-New-/120608528366?pt=GPS_Devices&hash=item1c14d417ee), shove a pay as you go sim in with a bit of credit and if I loose the bike, just text it to tell me its GPS position.
So for 50 quid spent some time ago I don't think it is too much if it helps recover your bike. OK the tracker would be found fairly quickly if the bike was to be dismantled, but I would guess most thieves are initially going to keep it in one piece. It is a comfort thing that you might be able to find it, no assurance that when you need it it may actually work. but to test it only costs a text

might be worth spending the extra money on ground anchor, big meaty chain, alarm for your garage, cctv, security lights, a co2 pistol etc..
a cheep mobile hidden on the bike and

The problem with this type of thing is it doesnt use GPS (or not on a cheap mobile that doesnt have gps) and will locate the phone mast that the phone connected to. This could get it down to a couple of hundred yards at best but in areas where one mast covers a large geographical area you could end up with tens of square miles. You will never locate the actual position of the bike, but if you were away from home it could alert you that your bike was too!
ooooor paint your bike a stupid colour that no else would. Puts thieves off i can tell ya. I have left my keys in the bike on more than one occasion and its still there

I've yet to recover a bike on tracker.
Cars by the ton, but never a bike.
Tracker is the one all Polce forces use.

Having known several people who have had them (Muffles included - thanks SK) and looked into it quite a bit myself, TBH they aren't worth the expense.
I only know of one where the bike was recovered after being stolen, and in a few cases the presence of a tracker sadly lead to a very frustrating, but unsuccessful, day or so trying and get to the bike before the tracker was discovered and removed.

+1
The cost of a tracker is likely to be somewhere around your insurance excess, possibly even more, and the money can be better spent on keeping it safe in the first place.
At night try and keep it out of sight, and if it absolutely has to be in the front garden/on the road put a cover on it. And if it's nice, shiny and particularly desirable, think carefully about where you leave it unattended when out & about.
