View Full Version : Why the pointless Thread Title changes?
Its getting ridiculous! Thats two this week?
Why? Whats the point? What are you gaining from it? Does it help the forum? Does it make searches easier?
or is it just a power trip? A whim? An abuse of privilidges?
C'mon, Spill the peas! Why are we too stupid to decide the titles of our own posts?

Can't wait to see what this thread title get's changed to!
It is annoying especially when the title is changed to something incorrect which changes the subject of the thread, had this when after tech advice which left the thread open to lots of irrelevant replies.

Which thread titles? I haven't changed any in months, but it is usually done to either edit swearing, to correct spelling or to clear up ambiguity?
An hour ago this was titled "I Won" (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=157278)
How can that possibly be construed as ambiguous? He won.
Now if he'd called it "Flamenco Dancers!!"
Completely Pointless! Who changed it? Why?

Whilst I can appreciate your annoyance, it looks like it is being done so that we have a better idea of what is in the thread, without having to waste time looking in the thread.

I noticed this too. We can all hover over thread titles to see the content before we open the thread and can decide if we want to read it. I agree that swearing etc needs removing but the editing of thread titles for "ambiguity" is treating forummers like children.
So what if my thread title is a bit ambiguous? Maybe I'm trying to be a bit mysterious and woo the readers in. Letting them know what they're getting before they've committed to at least hover ruins the charm.

There are lots of instances aswell of people creating thread titles like "R+G Bungs" in B,T&I and then stuff gets added in the title like "are they worthwhile". I mean, why is that necessary. It is quite fraustrating.

Oh, that's in bikes talk and issues, I am not mod there so I can't see any of the modding history, and there isn't anything about it in the mod section so I can't help you. I can see why perhaps the mod was trying to make it slightly clearer, but I agree with you completely that it was unnecessary and meddling. My preferred modding style is pretty much hands off unless anything goes badly wrong, but other mods are just people and have different styles. If it really bothers you, raise it via PM with the Bikes, Talk and Issues mods, but try not to get TOO wound up about it, its only the internet remember ;)

Of course if the thread was given a sensible / appropriate title in the first place then we'd not be having this conversation in the first place. I suspect it's Being done to prove a point. Staring threads in the techy section doesn't really help give an idea of content if it's got a daft or meaningless title. As alluded to it also makes searching less effective to.

As BillyC hasn't been on here for ages - why is he still a mod BTW, he never comes on here - it can only be one person. Sir Squid, j'accuse:lol:

Fair point Fizz bit this was a thread I started a while ago:
http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=154908
Someone added "Falco" to it (was called "Which tyre pressures", I think). Don't see how it is limited to the Aprilia only.

In Who's opinion? An anonymous mod? (and we still don't know who is making these changes) Surely the OP has "Ownership" of the title thread in the same way he would be liable for any defamatory comments made, inaccuracies, copyright and ideas. As has been pointed out, chaging the title changes the course of the thread. a thread that ahs the OP's name against it.
The OP decided to post like that for a reason.
Yes, correct spelling, remove swearing but please stop the inane editing that serves no useful purpose.

In the mods opinion. I dont tend to change them unless they are complety ridiculous if it's annoying you that much take it up with the section mod. It's not hard to work out who they are. In the case you've mentioned, the original title didn't really give much if any idea as to what the thread may contain, I can see why it was changed.

so as to avoid confusion. Not everybody might have known you dont ride an sv. Pressures for your falco may not be the same as the sv, Without the change I wander if you'd have got alot of 33f 36r replies which I wander if that would have been any help to you.
I said what bike it is in the first few words and described the whole problem, and the fact they didn't seem to work at 33/36.

Just out of curiosity and on a complete tangent - why does a forum that attracts people 16+ have a swear filter?
Also agree that changing the titles is pretty stupid. I've read a few of berlin's threads lately where he's questioned it being changed and it doesn't seem justified.

sometimes I wander about the age of some of the posters, suggesting an age of 7 I think perhaps is being a little generous. In the grand scheme of things is it really that important ?

Not that it particulary bothers me either way, but if it were not that important why bother with changing the titles in the first place? If you are saying that it doesn't matter if the title gets changed, why can't they just be left alone then?
(not directed at you personally fizz as you've said it wasn't you that changed the ones mentioned)
Who does it attract under 16? I can't say I've noticed anyone younger?

I prefer the swear filter tbh.

Please, don't even ask.
The forum has a U-rating and a swear filter, and thats not going to change.
Its a can of worms...
If you really want to find out more, search for 'u rating' or similar.

I don't mind the swear filter at all. It's actually quite nice to go on a child friendly forum.
Treating the adult forummers like children is quite a different matter though.
Excuse me, but I can ask what I want? I wasn't asking it to change, I was just curious.
Now that it has been pointed out to me that there genuinely is under 16's browsing or using the forum then I'm happy with that answer and I find it perfectly justified.
