Cant you get it repaired or plug it?
Could be worse - Could of had one in the front as well. :D
Well done for checking your tyres before you set off though, I often don't TBH.

You can do, but it isn't advised.

Its not BS. If it's near the edge there's a good chance the patch will peel off as the tyre flexes.

Its sort of off centre but better safe (and skint) than sorry

That is repairable

In terms of the width of the tyre, it certainly looks like it. But it is very close to the edge of one of the tread blocks - I don't know if that has a bearing or not.
Remember that the British Standard doesn't cover the repair of Z or W rated tyres. Most places will do it, but if they are playing it by the book...

We do Z rated repairs. The nail has to be no closer than 2 inches from the sidewall/edge of tyre. Does depend also on if any damage has been caused to the carcass from riding at a low pressure, that you could only see when you take off the tyre.
Alot of places though dont do these repairs.

Most of my local places have said no to repair (without seeing tyre) im going to get it taken off during week for a check over. If i need a new one and not being minted are pirelli diablo stradas any good cos they within budget.

The Strada's have been very popular with our customers and plenty come back for them so generally thats a good sign. I havent ridden on them though myself.

Same thing happened to me, outside a shop a woman left a note on my bike saying don't ride off you have a screw in your back tire. Similar place to yours.
Took it to a bike garage down the road, they were going to change the tyre but a mate of mine was there and said why can't you plug it for him? After muttering oh yeah i'll have a look, they plugged it.

Co-inky-dink, my dad had a screw in his rear tyre. Had it plugged and although it isn't recommended on a Z rated, was told it can be repaired.

My sprint had a nail in roughly the same spot, got it plugged and ran it for a few hundred high speed miles too and it was fine. Recentley had it replaced with a set of avon storms and typical due to go for an early morning ride and i have picked up another screw Grrrrrrr. Good thing though only cost me £15 for a brand new rear tyre to be fitted, go Avon.

^^^ How was it only 15 quid? are they insured or somthing?

Yeah it's an Avon guarantee something like 12 months or a 1000 miles, depends on which tyre. All I had to pay was for removal and fitting, thank god. Don't think it's advertised as much as it used to be

^^^Cool may sway my choice of tyre, i wonder if the same goes for pirellis or metzlers?
Without seeing the tyre for myself I'd say there's a lot of room for optimism that that can be repaired.
Find someone that will do it (this can take a little phoning round). Provided the tyre is removed, and a proper repair is inserted from the inside, it's completely safe. I have done a number of track days like this.
