View Full Version : Running lean or rich?

Fuel injected SRAD with k&n and an end can. Several people who've ridden behind me on rideouts have commented that it's running rich. The way I thought of it, was that there's more air going in through the k&n, so the engine will over compensate and stick more fuel through. Also, because the can is allowing it to exhaust easier than the standard can, more unburnt fuel is getting through......
however, YC seemed to think that theoretically it should be running lean because it's still on the standard fuel map for standard gubbins. I'm sure he'll be along in a minute to quote some quadratic bio-chemical formula's or drop a c-bomb, but which you think it is? Lean or Rich?

you calling me a winker? as for over enthusiasm, you could always take my quick action throttle off your bike & stick it on mine seeing as you never paid for it! eh? EH? (how'd you like them apples?)

they're rotten, i offered to pay many many times (just really quietly while you're facing the other way). Oddly you never reply. Your loss.

My thought is lean, generally adding more air without more fuel will make it lean. BUT that's on a carbed bike.
Your SRAD probably has a sensor in the intake to sense pressure, which should compensate for the different filter.
It's possible it was set rich before, for noise testing purposes, and it's now just more noticeable. If rich it will feel soft, but hard to compare when you don't know before/after or if there are any other issues occuring. It could well be some other issue like it's still in cold-start mode.
Dyno run is the way.

Or a bit cheaper than a dyno run would be to pull the plugs out and see if they point you in the right direction.Sooty means rich and white means lean

+1, the plugs are the window to the heart of it all.

If youve added Air filter and Can and not re maped/ jetted whatever id go with lean. Pop it on a Dyno.
