Well my good friend, who is used to riding pillion, popped my pillion cherry today.
Some people might think that it is too soon to take a pillion but I felt comfortable to do it.

There were a few initial wobbles (setting off and stopping at first) but after that all went very smoothly. :)

I headed towards bull beck with the intention of stopping there for a brew.
Got there and there were road works going on so I drove past. Figured as I was heading in that direction we might aswell go to devils bridge.

Didint notice Lucy on the back (she was there I kept checking!).
Got to the bridge and spent a good 5 minutes trying to talk Lucy round to getting off. She borrowed my 1 piece RST leathers you see and was feeling a bit constricted :p

Got a brew and sat on the wall soaking in the (occassional) sun. Lucy then decided to take off the top of the leathers. In doing so they slipped down. She failed to tell me that she only had knickers on under them. ;)
Gave the blokes a laugh!!!

Anyway all in all a great experience and I now have a full time pillion I think

haha, what did you expect her to wear under the leathers? you normally have them skin tight
sounds like the same size as my pillon when i carry them.

I always wear leggings under my leathers.
Makes them easier to get on and off.

well apparently they fall down easy enough without wearing anything more than undies :P

I took my mate pillion within a few days of getting my sv, he'd never been on a bike before and id never rode a big bike with a pillion, was ok except it felt like nelly the elephant had sat on the back.

I agree with YC about pillion making you smoother, i do concentrate more on smooth gear changes, light braking etc with wifey on the back, i find it tiring though as im really focused, probably too focused.

BTW i wear shorts under my leathers .

nice one, its good to do although its not as much fun as 1 up. as people have said smoother riding.

I still haven't taken anyone on pillion, but then I'm not insured for it. Kind of feel I should also experiance of being a pillion first.

And yeah, shorts under leathers.

I havent taken a pillion yet, confidence thing. Scared of becoming off balance at stops lol.

My mates that want to go on the back expect me to ride like a **** everywhere too, which I am definately not ready for yet, esp with a pillion.

andrewsmith
16-09-10, 08:45 PM
i haven't done pillion yet same thing as hongman.

A guy a work with takes the mickey cos a won't do it.
Helen you've probs done the best thing and tried with someone who knows how to

I havent taken a pillion yet, confidence thing. Scared of becoming off balance at stops lol

My main worry was balance as Im 5' 4" and can just about get the ball of my foot on the floor.

We had an understanding that she would let me know when she was going to move about on the seat at a stop. I put the bike in neutral and put both feet on the floor then let her know she could wriggle to her hearts content!

hongman
16-09-10, 08:59 PM
This is me. 5'3.5" (at this height even the .5" counts...) and stationary balance is my thing.

I havent dropped my bike for weeks now and I;d like to keep it that way, til I feel comfortable with having someone one the back.

Did you find it was easier to get the feet down with a pillion, with the bike being lowered from extra weight? No not enough to make any discernable difference?

minimorecambe
16-09-10, 09:05 PM
Now you mention it yes it was easier to get my feet down.

I usually say I am 5'4.1" to get a bit of extra height! Its leg length thats the pain (28")

Do you have a lowered seat on the bike?

barwel1992
16-09-10, 09:20 PM
hongman just get some one to sit on the bike stationary and see how it feels

minimorecambe
16-09-10, 09:28 PM
Thats a good idea :)
Then try a slow set off and stop.

Just remember aswell that you are in control of speed so they may want you to go fast but can do nothing about it.

I opened her up on straights but slowed considerably for corners until I was comfortable. Still kept it very steady though

hongman
16-09-10, 09:48 PM
I'll get round to it. My gf is far too uncoordinated to get on a bike though without a step ladder, and I dont have a step ladder ;)

Yep, lowered seat.

My first pillion was my six foot brother who is also something of a lump! The bike felt like a low rider chop when he climbed on, even with the shock on its hardest setting! He assured me that he knew how to ride on the back and so we went for a ride, whereupon he stood up on the pegs on a roundabout, that threw us across the road and nearly into a hedge. I might be his little sister, but he found out that day just how hard I can thump an idiot! :smt088

I have been carrying my friend Carley down to Bike night recently and she is a dream. I had to keep checking my mirrors last night because I though that she had fallen off, because I could not feel her weight on the bike. Before you ask, no I did not persuade her to get naked, she is not my type. She is petite, blonde, pretty and STRAIGHT! :smt120

Definitely get someone who is used to being on the back of a bike until you get used to it, the difference between my mate who is not at all experienced on bikes and my brother who has been on them all his life like me is amazing. I think its mostly just about being relaxed on the back of a bike which is hard to enforce! My dad made me laugh the other day, I was on the back of his busa and he overtook my two brothers, gave it a good fistful and the front reached for the sky. Afterwards he commented that I had been very composed, what was I going to do, Jump off?

Well, I can try to put in a good word for you, she is looking for a man who is rugged, strong, supportive, sensitive, kind, caring, charming, driven, attractive, well dressed, has clean pants, is good on bikes and likes her friends. :D

I warned her that she is unlikely to attract him though, I suspect that he will already have a boyfriend! :smt081

Did your mother not teach you about buses? My god, it was drummed into me as a lass that clean pants are essential for every journey due to the risk of being run over by a bus!

I suspect that modern parenting is not what it used to be. ;)

I have always been told to wear matching underwear.

The one day that I didnt (blue knickers and orange bra) I was involved in a car crash and the paramedics had to cut my pants off.

I was very apologetic about the fact that they didnt match my bra!

Safe to say they found it very amusing that I was more concerened about my mismatched underwear than I was my shattered pelvis and collar bone!!!

Tsk, Just found out that I could have been taking pillions before now -

ticket the opt out box on the bike insurer web-site cos I thought it would be cheaperm turns out when I check that for the broker i went with it actually makes no difference.

Oh well, at least it hasn't cost me anything more to add on. Good old H&R.

Your pillion keeping still? Stock suspension? Too nervous making you grip bars or actual handling problem?

I actually found handling pretty good with stock shock and pillion as it was pretty much compressed to the stop so nowhere for it to wallow to... just the pegs decked on the gentlest of curves lol

All of the above I think. Wasn't sure whether they should relax of grip hard. Also I'm not the tallest or most bulky person, and they kept sliding off the pillion seat forward. Must have looked hilarious.

Was planning to take a mate up to BSB pillion at the W/e and this was supposed to be a bit of a trial run. It's already been decided that's out the window and it's a car on Sunday :-(

Mate needs to pass their test me thinks!

Much prefer using the grab rail myself, and prefer when taking a pillion for them to use the grab rail. definitely get used to taking a pillion with someone who is used to going pillion, if they are relaxed and neutral you will almost forget they are there.

when i take pillon i like them holding onto me, otherwise i dont realise i have them til i go into a corner "too hot" and they get scaried and grab me, or grip with there legs tighter so i remember i have one, and generally they share the seat with me every down shift or if i break i just expect it to happen.

Unfortunately fashion dictates that my 3 daughters are far more likely to go out with no underwear on at all, so it doesn't spoil the lines of whatever skin tight clothing they are hoping to attract a victim by wearing.

Jebus, I'm sorry but I can't see what all the fuss is about. When I was a lad we didn't have fine handling bikes with good brakes etc but they'd still do 130mph, and all of my mates and me were taking our girlfriends out on the back as soon as we passed our tets at 17 or 18.

Just grow a pair and get on the bloody thing and ride ffs.
