View Full Version : Help - Is my bike getting stolen tonight???

They say bad things happen in three's. So far, puncture on saturday, yesterday a car knocks bike on the floor and snaps foot peg, tonight I get home to see a guy sat in his car on the corner of my road. I pop indoors to get my chain and when I go back out this young black guy is walking on the opposite side of the road towards me. When he sees me and the bike (which is partially hidden from view by my car) he turns back to his car and drives off :( He was there when I arrived. Stayed in his car until I left the bike to go indoors for a bit. Just incase I got his registration. It was a new black Audi I think. The bike lives on the road with a cover, alarm, disc lock and back wheel XL hardcore chained to a lamp post.

Is it likely its gonna get stolen tonight?

Is it a nice night for camping with a bat or shot gun. When my garage got dun over (never got bikes just tools) i slept in the garage for 2 nights as it wasn't secured with my dog and pick axe handle. Really wished they'd called back!!!!!

Why not call the locals, it will go down as a suspicious incident, pass the reg and they will run it through. If it is linked or known they may pay passing attention to your area during the night.

Thats what we do anyways ... just a thought. Do as much as you can to get a good nights kip and keep little toe rags at bay

Might try that. Would they really run the reg through or just tell me call back when its stolen?

They should chek it out even if just a check on the reg, they wouldnt tell you the outcome of the check but if there is a PNC marker on the car or anything on their intel system they would be more likely to drive around your area if they get the chance, or if they saw that car they may pull it as a regular stop check and deterrent.

Also if ya bike does go they got your report the night before of a suspicious car.

Wow. very nice plod. Took all the details and said dont worry too much. If it does get nicked, they will try and find it. Not much else to do I guess. Just to be safe though the Mrs was kind enough to let me keep the bike in the house overnight :-)

loads of stuff
Is it likely its gonna get stolen tonight?

Yes.

However, on a positive note it would appear from your location that you are perfectly placed to be first in the queue to watch the grand tennis competition next year...

Remember to take money for strawberries.

Hi N8te rider,

Spoke to you in the tesco carpark on the AR.

If your Mrs has agreed to let you keep the bike inside tonight, explain the situation and try to make it a permanent arrangement.

If you leave your bike outside it is a case of when not if, IMHO.

Put your missus outside with a chain round her and take the bike to bed. That will give Audi man a surprise.

Do this. Or at the very least for a couple of weeks as they may not come back right away - but once they know there is a bike there they will want to come back soon I expect.

Permanently in house is the best - do whatever you can to keep it like this! - sad fact of life that keeping a SS600 or similar bike, outside, in London, is asking for it to be stolen - I've had one go myself in similar circumstances (in Tooting so not a million miles from you. And it was Tooting Bec, nice area - new estate full of Porsches etc). Since then I've always had a garage at whatever cost.

Glad the O/H is letting the bike sleep in tonight.

We are lucky enough to have ours in a locked, alarmed cabin with oxford hardcore chains on all of the bikes

Silly question, but wont the alarm go off when it moves ?..

or you could if the post is out side your house, get a security light fitted on your house pointing directley to the bike.. and get the sensors pinpointing to your bike only.

Unfortunately this only really works if you are able to get up & to your bike within ~30 seconds - they won't care if alarms are going off, if they are in any way experienced. Just dump it in the back of a van and sort it out on the way/elsewhere. So basically physical security is the way to go...

Yep, pick it up, dump it in the back of a virtually sound proof refrigerated van.......

30 seconds...

Jeez thats slow.

I'd guesstimate about 3-8 seconds myself.

And if they throw a thick blanket / quilt over it NOBODY will hear the alarm.

Sounds probably like, i had my first silver curvy nicked with 1000 miles on it cos it was parked every day next to a 998 ( which was the target and just happened not to be there that day )

My bike lives in the house EVERY day and nightwe have a drive but no garage so it it get left outside it's chained to the tow ring on the back of the alarmed rover...
My house has 2 front doors, 1 is a side entrance (ex council house from the 60's) to we have a pantry *ahem* GARAGE for the bike to go in.
Was one of the conditions of the house we found, must have safe place for bike to park.

But given you are outside of London that could apply to pretty much anywhere in London. However, talking purely within the London area, Tooting Bec isn't that bad - having lived there for 4-5 years and insuring a bike the whole time, I had good reason to be aware!
Insurance was not the best, but not the worst. And the specific area I'm referring to - Heritage Park - is certainly one of the nicer areas in Tooting Bec.

Yeah, I was being generous. Though it does depend what they have to do to move the bike - in my case I wouldn't be surprised if it had taken them 30 seconds, the bike was "wedged" between a car and a hedge, and chained to 50kg or so of concrete, so it wasn't the easiest to drag around. But that's probably more an exception so we can go for 3-8 seconds ;)

Its safe :-) they didnt try to brake in although I fell into a very deep sleep at 11ish and then woke up at 7 and thought ROXY!!!! phew... there you are :-) keeping her at the garage at work tonight then off to cadwell for a long week/weekend. When I'm back will try and leave indoors more often if the Mrs will let me. Plenty of back rubs and cups of tea ;-)
