WOW!! 3 separate threads recently on waterproof trousers and jackets so I thought I would put together a definitive guide and be done with it ....
Gore-Tex - Branded waterproof membrane that is guaranteed not to leak for 5 years! The membrane is microporous, meaning that its pores are larger than water vapour molecules yet smaller than water droplets, so moisture released as sweat can escape clothing but rain cannot get in. Plus, garments are light and offer great freedom of movement. The most affordable product is Gore-Tex performance shell where the membrane is applied to a light backing fabric which is suspended between the outer material and inner lining. Gore-Tex Pro Shell is bonded between the outer material and the lining, giving the membrane greater protection from abrasion. It also breathes, developed using a device which precisely imitates the characteristics of human skin.
Sheltex - Hein Gericke branded waterproof membrane. An "own brand" waterproofing for those on a budget. Guaranteed not to leak for 2 years. Still wind proof and abrasive protection. Does exactly what it says on the tin.
I have looked up other brands mentioned in the threads such as Spada and RST and can't find an detail on what waterproofing they provide other than RST mention a "Reissa" membrane but again no detail. I imagine it is their equivalent of the Sheltex but can't be certain.
Jacket:
Hein Gericke Gore-Tex from £239.99
Hein Gericke Sheltex from £99.99
Spada from £124.95
RST from £89.99
Richa from £99.99
Trousers:
Hein Gericke Gore-Tex from £179.99
Hein Gericke Sheltex from £79.99
Spada from £104.95
RST from £69.99
Richa from £79.99
I hope this helps and is of use. RRP are correct at time of print although there are special offers available, e.g. HG are offering a full Gore-Tex suit for £350 till Tuesday.
I will add that obviously web prices are usually cheaper than shop prices but for a reason. You pay any postage costs that are applied and if there are problems, you pay for the postage back again. However the store you get a 2 year warranty and face to face customer service. Finally if anyone wants to visit their local Hein Gericke and get an additional £10 off then let me know and I will send you a voucher!!
