View Full Version : Disadvantages of a lowered seat?

I just bought an 03 SV650S this week, and one of the few things that had been altered on it from stock was the seat, it had been changed to a lowered seat. I'm told this made it a couple of cm lower. I'm 5'11" so I don't feel as though I need a lowered seat. I've ridden the bike about 70 miles since buying it and haven't really noticed anything bad about the seat. I don't feel particularly low on the bike. I got a little bit of left wrist pain on the ride home, but I assume this is because I was tense as it was my first time on the bike, and it was dark and wet. I would have thought a lowered seat would have a similar effect to raising the bars anyway so reduce wrist pain, and I imagine I'll relax as I get more confident on the bike and that won't be a problem.

I was just wondering what disadvantages of a lowered seat are there for someone of 5'11" ? Is it going to be much more comfortable if I replace it with a standard height seat. I was thinking of replacing it with a nice gel seat or something in the future, is it worth me doing this asap for any particular reasons?

Thanks

I have a lowered seat on mine. It is lowered by about an inch, but I am 5'4".

I see no disadvantage. I suppose it is all on personal preference.

Slightly more cramped position in the legs would be the only disadvantage I can see. Less padding in the seat might be a pain in the a**e.;)

Comfort on a bike is a personal thing. If you don't have a problem with either of the above I would leave it as is.

Sell me your lowered seat for a tenner, and then buy a new one ;)

The only thing I notice on mine is not a numb, but PAINful bum on longer rides.

Saying that mine is lowered so much there isn't much padding left at all ;)

ive got odds on your wrist pain coming from unadjusted levers not the seat, its a 2 min job but make the world of differance

You know what, I think you're right. I only got in my left wrist which I thought was strange, but maybe its because the brake and clutch levers are set differently. I will take a look at them and adjust accordingly!

Thanks!

Matey get a normal seat at your leisure, if you are OK riding it like it is then shop around for a gel at the right price.

Then sell your lowered as they ar £90 new, you will get your hand ripped off !!

I plan on lowering mine. I can use the standard one easy enough but I want to raise the ride hight of the rear a touch more (already a fair bit higher than standard).

I suppose it would also lower your elbows a touch making your arms closer to parraell with the road meaning countersteering will be more responsive, but I'd imagine that's marginal.

Wife's K4 has a lowered seat, I'm 6 foot 4 and don't really notice the lowered seat when I ride the bike. My wife is really happy with it as she feels more in control of the bike at junctions etc as she's not on tip-toes...

It only lowers it my 1cm anyway, just not as wide so ya legs aint as far apart making it a little easier to plant ya footsies on floor.

Well I'm gonna keep it for the moment, and probably swap it for a gel seat at some point next year before I go to europe. Thanks for the help with it!

I'm 6'0" and I just bought a pointy with a lowered seat.

I prefer it, it takes a little weight off wrists. I don't find my legs at all uncomfortable.

I have the standard seat. as a spare but haven't used it.

I also get achy left wrist too, but I put it down to the heavy clutch lever spring.
