I remember this song from when I was a little nipper in school, I remember the association with drug references thanks to Zammo and later Meet The Parents. But today I heard the song on the radio. I'm not entirely sure why it was being played, but it gave me an opportunity to really listen to it after all these years.

I now see it has nothing to do with drugs but it is a song about a little boy and his dragon. But there is something that really bothers me about the song, listen to it all, the original version by Peter, Paul and Mary and then answer the question: Is this not the saddest song ever?

Tis a bit depressing.
Peter, Paul and Mary have always said it's not a drug song as many claim.
If I remember correctly it's loosely based on a story/paper written by one of the lads roomates from university.

I loved this song as a child and I also used to "sing" (term used loosely as I can`t sing) to my son as a baby. I`ve never really thought of it as a depressing song cos I associate it with happy times, there`s far more depressing stuff out there.

Is it wrong that I remember it as a drinking song from Canoe Club trips away?

That's quite sad but in my mind this is the saddest song. My favourite of all time and the only one I can sing and play on the guitar at the same time with confidence lol. Also one of my favourite films.

Puff the magic dragon lived by himself
He had noone to play with so he played with himself
Found himself a girlfriend life was very tough
Found himself a boyfriend that's why they call him PUFF

Hmm my childhood version was:-

Puff the magic dragon, lived by the sea.
He didn't have a lady friend to call his very own.
Then one day he met her, a cracking bit of stuff
But he didn't know what to do
that's why they named him puff.

Or alternativly:-

Puff the magic dragon couldnt find a mate.
He frollicked in the autum mist accustomed to his fate.
Then one day he found her, a beauiful bit of stuff.
He didnt know what to do with her, THATS why they call him Puff.

Any more offers?

In latter years the name Puff the Magic Dragon has become synonymous with the AC130 Spectre - well, in military circles it has anyway. Theres some awesome footage of them on Youtube, just can't be ar5ed to post any. The troops in Vietnam originally assigned the name to an AC47 Dakota armed with 5 General Electrics gatling guns. They were used as a fire support platform with all five guns firing as the plane flew in an orbit around a given point. Just think of the sight of it - 5 guns, each firing 6,000 rounds per minute. Awesome display of firepower, and this was in the 60's and 70's!!

Probably, yes.

Is that a problem...?
