I need to prop up my sv while I remove the swing arm and rear suspension for cleaning and fitting the gsxr shock, and dont have an abba stand, or strong enough rafters in my shed, so is a 2 tonne trolley jack under the engine too risky?

anyone done it without ending up with an sv shaped blanket on top of them

try a ladder over the rear and the ratchet straps throught the frame.
once in place a plastic tie round the front brake and wedge some bits of wood against the side to stop it from moving sideways.

did it with the vfr which is considerably heavier than the sv.

dont risk it with only a trolley jack, especially as there are bolts that require a hefty pull on them to get them turning. Do as suggested with a ladder, stump up for the proper gear if you want to do it safely or book it into a garage and have them do it.

An abba stand will serve you well many times over so usually worth the cost.

As flymo says, but loosen relevant nuts & bolts before raising bike?

Mine spent ~5 months with a brick and a few blocks of wood under the sump, resting on the sidestand and with no frontend. :-)

I've also used axle stands under the footpegs and wood under the sump.

Worth mentioning that most if not all hydraulic jacks will drop over time, don't rely on them for anything other than getting things into position.

However the balance point is wrong for a jack under the engine, the best way is axle stands under the footpegs, not as secure with 'normal' footpegs as with solid rearsets but you can get them on the brackets the footpegs swivel on and it'll be secure.

Ih25 probably a step ladder over the bike then rachet up in the air. Done something similar before i got a paddock stand for my ol bandit to oil the chain.

Ive got a pair of axle stands, so may try that, i assumed with ladder, that step ladder that makes an A shaped is used, and the bike is in the centre of it?

Was planning on loosening all or as much as I could while bike still on both wheels, but i`ll end up missing something.

when i changed my shock I lifted the back end with my paddock stand and then fitted axel stands under the footpegs and removed to paddock stand seemed fairly solid think i put a tie wrap round the front brake aswell. i have solid rearsets fitted though so it made it easier.

Think I've used an iron bar through the pillion peg hangers in the past, resting on axle stands.

When I changed my rear shock, I used a paddock stand to lift the bike off the ground, I tied some rope to the pillion pegs, which I then hung using my daughters toddler swing. Worked a treat.

Any sort of A frame ( within reason ) can take the weight easy.
So ladder over the front of the rear seat, then rope or ratchet strap around the pillion pegs. if you only have rope this is where a jack or bottle jack will be useful to help raise it enough for some clearance.

sorry no pics of the rear but got one of the front if you want??

As posted by someone else. Axle stands under the footpegs. Its what i dont last when changing my shock. Take the rear wheel off using a paddock stand. Then jack up under the sump and jack bike up (Just a bit and carfully), place axle stands, lower bike onto axle stands. remove paddock stand and jack. Job done :)

Or you could borrow my ABBA stand for a small deposit, refundable on return
