Popped by local bike shop today and he had a few bikes in that had had the frames chopped in half and had a joint welded in so they could be packed away smaller. Just wondering if anyone else would be apprehensive about riding one!?

No way! That is bound to have weakend the frame substantially! It'd be like a cut n shut motor!

He also described the bolt you can see as 'low strength monkey metal'.
Fun!

It's the main frame at the front of the bike, blue bit to the left is the tank , headstock to the right.

hehe, they're for a company that rent out cars. The lads drop the car off and these are split in the back they then expect the blokes to assemble them quickly and ride back to base.
Going to point out the shop didn't touch the frames he advised the company that he wouldn't ride one himself - they're in for other issues, fork seals, electrics etc.

the fact that it looks as though someones picked an off cut up off the workshop floor and shoddilly had it welded on by a blind albanian and couldn't even be bothered to hamerite it, then if i had a choice i would leave it well alone.

Believe they're within 3 years old so no test as of yet.
I'm more worried about employers expecting their employees to use them....even despite the warning!

dont think any insurance company or M.O.T. centre would be happy with that as a modification.

So am I, hence asking the question re the MOT.
I wonder how they handle the, "have the bikes had any modifications made" question when insuring them? I wouldn't insure those for use.
just a bit of surface rust...

Yeah that's why I didn't mention the model to start with! people would miss the frame chop query and just think "wouldn't ride that chinese deathtrap"
I would...in exchange for last night's jackpot winning lottery ticket.
driving down the road...........ooo better stop quickly, theres a child in the road...........instant low rider rake angle

that's shocking.
Maybe a call to VOSA?
An employer shouldn't be putting their employee's at risk like that tbh.
Not to mention there's the potential risk of riding round with a bike full of fuel etc in the boot. Not sure when Hazmat comes into play, we let stores sort that for us.
Just get them a fold away pushbike instead.

Sherv would ride it :)
It looks like Sherv made it!
That would fail an MOT/VOSA inspection.
On the grounds that: Modification that clearly weakens the structure of a load bearing member within 30cms of steering, braking or suspension mounting areas. (this is not a direct quote from the VOSA testing manual, but I AM an MOT tester)
If that was stopped on the road by VOSA they would have a field day with that!!

Well it was welded initially, so what is wrong with welding it again? That welding looks pant, granted, but if it had been welded properly I can't see the problem. If I had welded it I'd be happy to ride it.
How do you think they join the headstock to the frame in the first place? So long as the work is done properly its OK. Not the same as cut and shut as this affects crumple zones etc - car was not initially welded in that area.
would anyone like to know what company that most likely is?
i've had several cars delivered by one of thost car companies who expect their staff to drive round on a bike that is ultimately too small and dangerous for them to be on the road - high vis or not.
Those bikes are hysterical. They should have a big flag sticking up at the back to make them a bit more visible. Apparently they only have a range of about 15 miles.
I'd ride it (with my legs out in front so if it broke in half I could style it out and carry on running as if nothing happened).

Not all welds are the same though...

I used to have a bike that had a part of the frame that looked like that
...it was however a mini moto, and it got a new frame shortly afterwards

mmmm, when bike are Cat A written off the breakers are supposed to chop the headstock and return it to the insurance are you sure that this isn't from a CAT A frame thats had a headstock grafted in from an unrecorded but very damaged frame especially if you are talking about a bike thats under 3 years old and still worth a bit
These bikes are the tiny little monkey bike lookalikes that car firms/taxi drivers use to and they go in the boot of a car. I'll post a pic later.
I think this is actually the same bike:

Anyone changed their mind?

There is a guy who rides to work in Oxford on one of them. Looks terrifying - he is about the same height as the bus wheels! I actually considered geting one for my camper van, but I'd only use it to potter about on, not in heavy traffic. They are bloody tiny!
