Just got the Mrs a small netbook with Windows 7 and before I start it up I wanted to know what anti virus protection she will be better off with. One that deos not suck all the performance away like Norton does. Its only for general web use, Facebook and email. We need it whilst she is in hospital with my daughter for a few weeks. Cheers

Microsoft Security Essentials (http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/) is decent and very low on resources. Full scans can take a while not that it matters much.

Is that on a netbook mate?

I run it on a netbook. It's great - much quicker than the bundled AV which was mcafee i think.

I've had performance problems before with Norton and its not something I'd recommend.

I've also had performance problems with AVG ( the free one ) so I'd not recommend that either.

The only AV, I've used thats been install and forget is Mcaffe, but dont go and buy the whole "internet security suite", just get the basic AV and then a good malware / spyware checker, such as adware. Should see you right.

I have a netbook.....not currently running a windows OS.....

However when I got my netbook it had Windows 7 starter on it. I researched loads of anti-v's and there was an article in my stepfathers comp magazine about the best anti-virus software....

Microsoft Security Essentials actually came out top on viruses.

Its quick, easy, free and works.

I've used this one a lot too and its good. The microsoft one is better tho imho as it's a little less intrusive.

+1 have used this for over a year. Very impressive. No issues and you don't know it's running. I have an Acer Revo net top.

Without a doubt the best of the current crop of free AV IMO

The netbook came with Microsoft Security Essentials already installes. So I have run all the updates. But I cant see if this is now enough protection to use it for online banking. Anybody know?
