I wouldn't have an ER5 as I'm not keen on that engine. Stay well away from GPZ500s too.
With owt else be careful of school bikes as they don't get an easy life, but if you find one that's dead cheap might be worth a look. Same with DR bikes.

What about a dullville?

how about a GS500, some of them are school bikes but i find most schools tend to lean towards the kawacks or the hondas for the 500's as the GS is slightly heavier but the engine is bullet proof (even if you accidently forget to put oil in for several months).
