The idea of a HPI check is you do it BEFORE you buy the vehicle!

But surely you bid to buy. Hardly fair on the seller if you refuse to pay after winning.

Not if its stolen or an insurance write off, then the item isn't as descibed, which HPi will show

Never mind I'll just do any old HPi

surely you should have done HPI before you bid on the vehicle?

as above, not very fair on seller or bidders.

Doesn't that car spotter text thing do it for you?

It's half the problem with eBay, buyers messing around afterwards.

Some sellers may not know the history of a vehicle they own so cant disclose stuff they do not know about. Do your investigations before bidding to buy it

You can hardly be expected to HPI every vehicle you bid on

Well the seller isn't bothered by my request to do an HPi check, so I don't know why you are?

I don't muck sellers about, but you can't be too careful when buying a car

Reg details weren't disclosed on EBAY

Yep, but how much does it cost and what does it give you?

Single check with HPi is £19.99

But other sites quote only £3.95 for an HPi check, so whats the difference

Yep, not at £19.99 for a single check

They all get information from different places, some are more thorough than others.

I think its about 4 quid, i know it gives you price info but not sure what else, if you've found summat that specifically says HPI for £3.95 then i'd go for that bud.

Difference in the prices on this site are to deal with the level of cover, so for £5000 its £4, gold £9.99 £10,000 cover, platinum £14.95 - £20,000

Do the one on ebay that is linked to the ad, its the proper HPI one. Doing it after you win is the right thing to do as the seller should be honest about the listing anyway. I wouldn't want to keep paying for HPi checks then not winning the auctions.

Hardly fair of them to try sell you a nicked motor really is it?

He ended up getting £600 scrap for it,

He got pwnt then. A Cat C bike is worth just as much as a non-Cat C one at that end of the meerkat if it has been repaired properly

is there some form of words you could ask the buyer which would cover you in the event that the item is not as described?

No, you should HPI it anyway.

If they do not own the vehicle (important bit) then they have no right to sell it and are trying to rob you.

If they dispute on ebay or something then the item is not as described and you (as a buyer) are in the clear.

Just ask them for reg number, if they don't want you to do a HPI check then that's bad news for their reliability!

Swin
18-10-10, 11:54 AM
ok - I was thinking that if you asked them these questions and they didn't provide a satisfactory answer, they you would be in the clear to withdraw your winning bid, but I would agree, a refusal to give a reg no would imply something could be fishy

Hardly "messing about" if you bid on something in good faith and discover it has a hidden history, then pull out.Its a case of buyer beware, and thats exactly what the buyer is doing. If sellers are getting uppity about HPI,then perhaps they should run their wares through a check themselves and advertise the result.
