officially done the most stupid thing this morning!!

And i am not proud of it at all!! and feel i need to name and shame myself!!!

go up, got ready, uncovered bike, started bike, got lid on, noticed some smoke coming out from right side of faring, investigated a while, decided that it was crud on the down pipes burning off,Sat on bike, selected first pulled away, got no more than 1ft forward, massive BANG! bike shuddered to a stop, and dropped to the left!

Somehow i managed to get my leg down and save it from going all the way! but how....i have no idea, she is a dam heavy old bike!!

Managed to snap the wing mirror off in the process!!! sheared the bold clean through! not sure how....but very annoying on its own! but at least the bike didn't hit the floor!

managed to struggle the bike back up and put back on stand!!

First thing going through mind was that the smoke was electrical and something was going wrong!! no idea what.....but then i thort about it, carb fed bike etc etc, it couldn't be!!

So i picked up the wing mirror!! walked back into house with head down and dropped it off..

This time i pulled away my feet were firmly walking along the road incase same thing happened!

then.........BANG!!!! shudder!!!! stop and started falling.....this time caught it fine!

WTF could it be!!!

then it hit me.........DISK LOCK!!!!!

What an absolute TW@!

How could i forget that! i was a little concerned when i got the lock that it didn't have a lanyard, but i decided only a complete idiot would leave it on!!!

at least i know it works now though!! :)

although now a quick technical question for you, the calliper taking a big old thump like that, should i be looking for any signs of damage in particular? or should it be ok? the breaks felt absolutely fine this morning on the ride to work, but wasn't giving it a handful!

Ha, I bet nearly everyone on here has done something similair at some point, I certainly have, but only pushing the bike. The other day I sat on the drive for a good 5 minutes wondering why it kept conking out when I put it into gear. Oh yeah the sidestand is still down.

Ouch. Best go get a lanyard then eh?

At least you didnt do it in a pub carpark with a bunch of other orgers there and end up with your bike leaning on someone elses, with you as the protective padding (R&G crashbungs are NOT comfy to sit on)

The most i've ever done is wonder why the bike wouldnt start when the bike was in gear with the sidestand down... not been that stupid on the SV yet though, and i dont leave a disk lock on mine all the time, no point where it gets parked all night.

Geodude
19-10-10, 09:36 AM
Done that more than once doh! so got a disk lock reminder cable. Tried all day once to start bike and ended up calling out my brother a day later who pointed at the big red kill switch and told me what it does...

I once sat outside work for quite a time wondering why the bike wouldnt start.
After a 12 hour shift I just wanted to get home so was about to ring my Dads to come and sort it out.
As I got my phone out and started dialing I realised I hadnt turned the key to "on" :p

I once got very close to taking my car door apart to replace a motor because the electric window wouldnt work and then remembered the switch that disables the passenger window....

Get an alarmed disk lock. It will go off if you start the bike before removing it, and any additional security on your bike can't be a bad thing.

I've neglected to remove my chain before, came to a rapid halt as it wrapped itself round the rear axle, took some real elbow grease to remove that bugger I'll tell you!

Also had the kill switch and sidestand problem before, but my most embarassing one was when after pulling into work and seeing my usual parking spot was blocked by the postie, parking elsewhere.
Leaving work that night I get on my blue SV, key in...it won't turn..wiggle remove, replace wiggle, getting a little annoyed...when I notice another biker just standing there staring at me.
It suddenly dawns on me...I didn't park here this morning because of the postie....wait a second...this isn't my bike

When I have the disk lock on in the garage I leave the pillion seat off to remind me (the disk lock lives under the seat) As I dont have one of them Lanyard thingies. although a lot of the time when in the garage putting the disk lock on is negated by the fact I have forgotten to take the keys back out of the seat release.

Well, ordered the lanyard, £4.50 with postage, if it means avoiding any damage to the bike that is fine by me, i think i got of lucky with only the bolt for the mirror being damaged!! so next time i could see it being a new disk or something! and i am sure that will be slightly more than £4.50!! :)

Nothing even close to that , and for one very good reason , have never owned a Disc lock and never will . I saw somebody try to ride off with one at what would be described as a fast launch . I saw the lock , I tried to wave my arms in the air to catch their attention and they just looked at me .... grinned ..... and gunned it .

It was not pretty and caused a lot of damage to an RGV250 , and the clothing of said person . The worst part of it was that it was a Limited Edition "Lucky Strike" paintjob and it was scratched to hell afterwards .

+1 to what Badger said. I realy dont see why people have disc locks. Everyone I know who has one has caused damage to their bike with it. Just seems pointless.

I have a big fat chain I wrap around the back wheel, I have forgotten to take it off a couple of times but as I always back out of the garage I am not going very fast and soon realise before it has the chance to damage anything or get caught up.

They fit in yer pocket, and it stops people casually rolling it around. Since buying a reminder cable i have never had any issues.

I agree, Much easier than the chain to put on, and if you ask me more secure.

When you don't have a garage to secure the bike all the security you can get the better.

22-10-10, 08:39 AM
Yep - the disk lock is much more portable than my Almax chain. I'll often supplement it with a simple steel cable attaching the bike to something solid.

Obviously, if someone turns up with bolt croppers to cut the cable and a van to load the bike into I'm out of luck. But hopefully if they're professionals they will want something shiny and new, not a scruffy old VFR.

Keith.

I fell off my 50 in the blockbuster car park when I was 16, doing about 15 mph, being a bit ambitious with the lean angles. Some fella getting in his car saw me and shouted 'you alright there mate' and started walking over. I gave him the quick thumbs up and could not get out of that car park fast enough. Didnt even realise I had cut my hand til I was at the traffic lights down the road. Incidentally thats the last time I ever rode without gloves.

Similar reason why I don't have one. Saw a guy set off in Helmsley car park, bang - disk lock left on - over he went, knocking over about 10 bikes in the line of parked bikes. Just like dominoes falling over. The only reason more did not go down was the speed of the bike's owners sprinting over to save their beloved machines. He was nearly lynched by irate bikers...

No disc lock for me after seeing that.

Or if you have a proper bike, like me and Lenny, you put it under the seat, along with your alarm, chain, butties, bottle of pop, tool kit, clothes for the weekend, insurance docs, ironing board, iron and fridge...

I disclocked myself at the Shrewsbury AR. Nobody noticed I think  So don't tell anyone, it's a secret.

Put it on the back btw, it's much less bad news if you forget- you're less likely to drop the bike and the hardware's cheaper if you bend it.

They are s**t though, I reckon they cause more losses in damage than they save in thefts.

Did the same a long while ago on a GSXR750 while parked in a motorcycle bay outside snowhill nick in London. On the bike. Started up. Went to pull away, the bike stopped dead and fell to the left. Hopped off it to save my leg. Picked it up and proceeded to lift it too much so it went over on the right. Luckly (sic) I was tail ended pretty badly a few weeks later so got the paint done on that claim.

I've never done it but then I never use a disk lock. A friend of mine did it once leaving work. His bike was already pointed toward the exit. He jumped on, started the bike and took off on the rear wheel. It was a bit of a mess about 0.5 seconds after the front wheel came back down.

I went to the MotoGP at Donnington one year. Parked up in an obvious sea of bikes, when I went back, my bike was gone! I'd parked it next to a red Ducati, which was still there... Only when I was walking back to report it to someone, did I notice that i'd taken a wrong turn... and there's a lot of red Ducatis...

Got up this morning for work, absolutely flagging from last night due to lack of sleep. Got on the bike, put her in first, upped the revs as I was about to pull away and then all of a sudden I wondered was it was under my right palm. Only the reminder cable! SOooooooooo close! What a near miss. And I was starting to think I could get away with not using the reminder anymore.

Couldn't start Wifey's old VanVan this spring. I'd had my old NSR and that on charge for a day each. The NSR fired up like a good'un but from the VanVan nothing, not even a cough from the starter motor. I put the battery back on charge, I tried again, I went to Halfords and brought a new one, I even got the Father-In-Law to bring over the battery from his VanVan to swap over and still nothing. Until he got on and fired it up straight away. "Embarrassing, how did you do that?" "I held the clutch lever in - it's a Suzuki, they all do that." Still, at the least I knew how to start the SV when I bought it!

Only done the disclock thing once, and that was on a battered 170,000 mile old CB250RS. You couldn't tell what scrapes were new out of all the ones it had, so no great shakes aside from it broke an indicator lens. I hadn't a clue what bike the indicators came off so I just gaffa taped the broken one back on and it passed 2 more MOTs like that.

I stopped locking the bike up after that, even though it had no ignition switch cos I lost the keys when I moved house. The keys turned up in a box 3 years after I gave the bike away.

Ahh, the stupid things that we do, once dropped the bike in a car park slipping on gravel! Sat for ages wondering what the big light was on the dash and wondered if it was safe to start the bike with it there, "Oh that is your ignition light dear" says the bike shop man! How many times have we all got all geared up, pulled our gloves on and then realised that the bike is still locked in the garage with the keys in my pocket? Oh, just me then...

Yeah, me in the thicko club too! ;-)

Similar story I once heard, two friends of friends (as you do) sitting in a car at the lights, bike pulls up in the next lane. Doesn't put either leg down, guys in car quite impressed at his balance.

Next then they know bike topples over with a crash!

Guys jump out of car and rush to help, biker is just lying there, laughing his ass off.

Turns out he'd decided to uncouple the sidecar before going for this morning's ride and forgotten...
