View Full Version : HPI check question
Almost sold my bike, and i've got 2 firm interests. One guy wants a HPI done for peace of mind which I have no problems about. He quite rightly got the VRM, and the VIN no but is asking for the issue date and the serial number of the v5. Now fair enough, he might just be being cautious and guaranteeing his investment, but I'm a bit wary as I've not yet met this bloke, had a conversation by phone and he's seen photo's of the bike. I thought the 2 pieces of info I have given him would be sufficient. I am wary of V5 cloning so i'm a bit miffed as to why this info is needed.
I've assured him that its all above board, and that I bought the vehicle for cash. He says that pending a clear HPI, then he'll be buying it.
Anyone had this before?

How about you offer to do the full HPI check yourself and add the £20 to the bike price.Buyer gets the HPI cert with the bike?
Yeah did think of that, but then he's got no money in the deal. At least its then cost him £20 and me nothing if he walks away. I dont have anything to hide and know the bike was ok when I bought it so HPI is nothing but piece of mind for the seller.
He does need these details according to HPI site so all is well.
I'll get a deposit on the bike to secure it though, as I've got another firm interest waiting
give him the last few numbers?
Might be enough to satisfy him that the V5 document matches the HPI.
After all if you explain your concern for not wanting to give out the V5 number if he is genuinely interested it will not matter.

When I HPI checked my XT600 via the link on ebay, it asked for the basic details and said something like there was "no indication of any problems", but in order to do a full check and issue a guaranteed certificate I had to get these two pieces of information from the seller and input them. He's probably using the same or a similar website, and the request for this information is probably genuine. It's up to you though.

When buying bikes privately we've always HPI'd them, we do the basic check before we agree to travel and then once at the sellers we do the second bit with the V5 serial numbers etc, either using my wife's smartphone or by phoning a friend with an internet connection and getting them to input the numbers from the V5. We also compare the number on the V5 to the bike....
Can you convince him to do this? Offer your internet connection if you're feeling generous...
