so, I have been covered by A-Quote/Arriva for some years and been more than happy.
This years however, arriva are not prepared to offer me insurance and a-quote have gone elsewhere and ouch what a price. So first gripe, wtf do they go for this automated renewal malarky?
So done the rounds, made the mistake of comparison sites, nothing doing on price. Carol Nash, Yeah 30 quid cheap, less excess and adding commuting cover.
It has taken me over an hour on the phone to cancel the renewal. It is as if they want to make it difficult for you to cancel. So they ask if they can requote knowing I am not going to renew. Only 20 quid off. So cancelled.
Biggest bug bear. They have the audacity to add an administration charge to renew my policy. They already get a commission from the policy provider.
Hello Carol Nash.

I think all insurance has gone up this year, ive spoke to a few people who say their premiums have gone skywards :(
Makes me laugh how its dead easy to renew but like you say they make it as difficult as possible to cancel.
Ive also went to take my missus off my policy but it was going to go up another £47 ? ? ? ? so left her on :(
she cant drive for toffee and wont be driving my car anyhow :)
Just received my renewal for the scooby, gone up by 50% despite being in a low risk job, over 40, 10years ncb and no accidents, claims or convictions.
Have used a few comparison sites and the cheapest is.....
My existing insurer, at £70 cheaper than my renewal quote.

We got our renewal from Aviva last week for the poofwaggon
£991FC
double last years!
Went on comparethemeerkat and got a quote from a 4x4 specialist with all the same benefits for around 400 quid FC.
We wouldn't mind but a few months ago they gave us 50 quid back for putting me as a second driver on L plates, and now they want it back and then some!!

It's weird how that works.
I've got my mum on my policy (shes been named for the last 10 years).
She never touches my car, has done about 10k in her own car from new (2001) but brings my policy down just for being named.
Insurance companies are just weird.

Looked at car insurance out of interest as its getting bloody cold out there at the moment. apparantly it would cost me the same to insure me on an POS fiesta or similair as it did to insure me on a group 13 car earlier this year?

Not looking forward to that part. I am scheduled to loose my company car, and will for the first time in 20 years have to buy a car and take out my own insurance.
My daughter was whinging this morning that she has 6 years no claims and they want £500 for her fiesta. Again her previous insururer (Footman James) has declined to insure her this year. It looks as if insurers are abandoning sections of the market.
another thing the government should be looking into. if people cant afford insurance what are the people going to do? answers on a postcard to your local MP.

Sounds about right. I was getting similar quotes between a diesel 2.0focus and Diesel BMW 120D or 2.5l petrol Z4 BMW last year.
This year my insurance went up by about 10%, despite having one years NCB now. :(

A friend has just put a very good point to me:
In light of my car being smashed into while parked, and another friend's car having brake fluid thrown over it, and in both cases the insurance company putting malicious damage down as 'at fault'...
WTF is the point of anything beyond TPFT? I reckoned it was so you could work out whether cost of repairs > the increased premiums for the next few years, but has anyone else got a better explanation or reason?
benji106
21-10-10, 02:33 PM
Well if you crash your £10,000 car, no one else involved and its a complete right off, if you only have TPFT then you are going to be £10k out of pocket. the insurance premium increase probably wont cost quite as much.

a quote last year on a £1000 car was £1500 fully comp at 18 no ncb, quote this year on same car but year older at £800 cost is £4k insurance ....... :o so adding another bike to the policy instead to ride the winter
In another forum, an insurance specialist posted up in Sept that NIG was pulling out of personal insurance (i.e. all domestic/vehicle stuff), which prompted all the others to review their business in that sector and inevitably premiums went up as a result on the basis of "any excuse".

Seems a bit crazy wanting to insure a £1k car FC in my opinion!

having a named driver implies you dont drive the car at all times and a lower risk driver as a named driver lowers the risk therefore reducing your premium...

yes but you are older and have held a license for longer (car)
Have you tried looking at TPFT insurance?
It genuinely would be worth your while I would have thought.

Cheapest I could find this month for mine was same price as last year, but that's for TPFT and I was fully comp! Cheapest FC price I could find was over £100 more. That's with no claims made on the car at all and I searched hundreds of insurance companies too. Was well ****ed off!

Nonsense isn't it? Broker Swinton, Insurer KGM was hugely expensive. Broker H&R, Insurer KGM was half the price for an identical policy!

£600 difference, but still doubt your mum would fancy that! Although is this 1.4 car a mazda:razz:?
Mcgrimes is that fully comp? If not, bet you could get it cheaper. Tried bike sure? They quoted me about £350 TPFT this year including other bikes.

Well, the docs/certificate have arrived from Carole Nash. I have emailed and had confirmed receipt back of their acceptance my proof of no claims. So very happy an insurance company broker behaving properly.
However, as I well know the acid test is when you make a claim. Hopefully I will not need to test them.
I have to say that I find it inappropriate that a broker (A-Quote) charges an admin fee on business that they then get a commission on. But I suppose it is like the dodgy mortgage brokers of the past few years that would charge somebody to find them a mortgage as if they were incapable of doing it themselves.
But then again I also cannot understand why these brokers then do not offer their best price on renewal, but reserve that for clients who want to then cancel. Maybe if they were a bit more honest on pricing then their client retention rates would be higher.

Congrats on rejoining the list of the insurable. Don't be a naughty boy again. Or if you must, watch out for tanks full of gas.
Who the feck are you with anyway. It was £150 for my little 600 comprehensive, European, ride any bike, commuting, breakdown, legal and protected ncb
I'm paying £250 ish for the SV, that's 3rd party f/t including commuting.
Problem is at the moment i have 0 no claims although many driving years experience. Cant wait till next year, over 25 and a year no claims back :)

Insurance seems crazy.
I keep mine in an unlocked garage, with no chains or locks. Not the best part of town either. I'm 22, no NCB as I only just passed my test 3 months ago and I declared 9 points.
Mine's only £400ish FC with riding any other bikes!
do you honestly think its going to make a difference?
i have 12 odd years no claims on my car insurance and my insurance still goes up every year. i have never had an accident in a car and only claimed once on a bike for theft. work that one out.

Re the random renewal / admin fee: I think its to prevent people letting insurance auto renew and then using the standard right to cancel any policy within a set length of time with full refund.
As the refund only covers the policy, the insurer gets to keep the renewal fee. Sneaky.
Yup they are all a bunch of ****ing ****s
Trying to get my new bike insured, want to insure it from 31st of this month and some companies are happy to do that and back date my NCB but they all come up more expensive than MCE who im currently with for my SV policy, trouble is MCE wont start me a new policy with the 3 years NCB untill 17th November when im due for renewal, its 17 days and ive told all the other companies i wont have 3 years till 17th Nov and they are fine with it but MCE are being arsey about it, i understand their logic but why are some companies happy to accept yet a company ive been with and want to (well dont want to but have no choice) give my money too wont do it
and the current underwriter wont insure me on my new bike

I have my renewal just come through
Honda Accord 2.0lt petrol £226 fully comp for me and the memsaab plus any other driver if I am in the car,and drive anybody else's car with their permission.
Reading some of the quotes on here------Hooray for SAGA.
being an old git has some benefits then
P.S. That is a £39 increase from last year which seems reasonable considering how much other companies have raised their premiums
