ok. my VFR

just changed the back brake pads..

old pads had metal shims on to stop the brakes squealing I presume..

should they be transferred to the new ones? or just put the new ones on..?

there does not seem to be enough space even with pistons tight back to put the shim and padding on too?


so should shims be on ALL brake pads or not ?

The shims are to stop brake squeal, technically they should be there but it won't kill you

maybe i not getting me pistons back far enough - i try again when the fire has warmed the shed up..

Yeah, the anti-squeal shims should go on fine quifster. Changed mine over no problem.

Maybe worth giving them a quick buff with a wire brush whilst your there if they have any build up on them ....... outside in a breeze as well , don`t inhale that stuff mate .

did you get you get aftermarket or geniune Honda pads? the Honda ones are usually supply with new shims

Good morning all.


If I recall correctly, EBC recommend that you don't re fit insulators with their pads.
However, shims such as in the rear caliper on a Curvy should be re fitted. As, they help maintain even pad wear.

The leading edge of a brake pad will wear more that the trailing edge. Being semi circular the shim compensates for wear by effectively pushing the trailing edge first.
When people have fitted the shims the wrong way round the pads come out wedge shaped in section:D

Ah. I was thinking of the perforated platey things that go behind some of my pads which I think are flat.

They are there to dissipate heat. Most pads for performance bikes come with them.
