Tried to reinstall windows 7 on the brother in laws laptop, when he first got it I made backup DVD's using the Acer recovery management program.

When I use the Acer recovery management restore to restore to factory defaults I get this error message:

"Hard drive configuration is not set to factory default, restore aborted".

So I thought I would just do it the old fashioned way and boot up from the DVD and got the following error message in Windows boot manager:

"Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer.

This error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as an external USB drive while the device is in use, or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or CD-Rom drive that is failing. Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and then restart your computer.

0XC00000E9
An unexpected I/O error has occurred."

Im pretty sure the hard drive and CD drive are fine because there is no problem with them.

Anyone got any advice?

You will need to install the SATA drivers for the hard disk.

or change the settings in the bios so the hard drive is NOT sata, it will still work but wont send the computer in circles looking for Sata drivers which arent there.

you mean
1) turn off AHCI mode
2) install windows
3) install AHCI driver
4) change bios to AHCI mode
