View Full Version : Time for Chain Lube?

Guys,

I normally re-lube the chain straight away after cleaning but have just cleaned the chain again and wont be riding for at least a few days probably a week or 2 so thought I would lube it when I need to ride.

Is leaving the chain un-lubed and unused ok or should you lube straight away as a chain needs to always be lubed?

Advice from the oracles always greatly received.

Cheers
Neil

id lube it now, not that it really matters

If you do it sooner rather than later it'll stick better and you can just get on and ride in a couple of weeks. Alternatively you could do it the night before you want to ride it.
Or just 5 minutes before you ride it (but it'll probably fling).
Whatever you choose the difference in the chain's lifespan will not be noticeable!

Best time to lube a chain if after a ride when the chain's warm and the bike's going to be sat for a bit of time.

Are you expecting a link to the ageing wisdomful wacky biker than told me this' site? He don't have one :(.
In reality I doubt anyone would ever notice the difference in doing it, but I choose to do it (albeit true or not ...+ it's also the most convenient time to do it).
I guess the theory is; a warm chain's moving parts will be fractionally more open then if it were stone cold so in theory lube could work it's way in better, if it's then left for a number of hours, in my mind, it has chance to settle and stick properly and would be less inclined to propel itself at your tyre within 2 minutes.

And ,that, is why I typed it your honor :salut:

Best time to lube a chain is little and often.

Or constantly.

Consider yourself knit-picked :smt040

No worries, chris's point seems the most pressing, specially if it's kept outdoors

fyi...the bike will be kept on a motorcycle workbench in a workshop.

I'd spray it with wd-40 to keep the rust at bay then lube it before riding. I usually lube my chain after a fast ride as it gets into all the vital places when its nice and warm.

The right answer.

See Chris, we don't disagree about everything!

The best time to lube the chain is while you're riding!
(Just got a Scottoiler but have not yet had time to fit it on the bike)

Using chainwax I usually leave it on there until the night before, then clean it good with wd-40 and lube in the morning before riding.

One word - Scotoiler.

After I was the bike I give the chain a light covering with scotoiler oil, on an oily rag.

Paint brush the chain with used engine oil before you store it and then just give it a wipe over when you come to use it next[Short term fix and costs nothing]
