earphones

first of all didn't know whether this was bike talk or in here....


im after some earphones for wearing with my lid, for the past few years i've made do with the mushroom ones (pictured) but when putting the lid on they pull out my ears, they are generally a pain, dont block out enough noise for the motorway, take ages to get on and comfortable. Also when turning your head they pull out my ears......... basically they phail have to pull over (safely :rolleyes:) and feck about

I've herd you can get moulded one's to fit inside you ear, much like hearing aids do but i cant find any info ect about them anywhere..........??

what does everyone else use?


p.s. pc brigade.... i don't care for your views on safety. i have also gone 1mph over the limit before, lock me up i say!! :o

They do the ones with earphones, expensive, but they'll fit well and protect your hearing from the wind & bike noise.

I wore normal earphones to this years AR, but they got uncomfortable after a while, so I think I might get some custom ones done

You can get in ear phones that are long rather than a button type that you have, you can get them as noise cancelling as well.
If I can find a pic gav I'll post it up, thinking of getting some for my autocom cos I hate the ones they supplied.

I've tried allsorts with mixed (and generally mediocre) results. Started with some Sennheisers like you showed, same issues with putting helmet on. Tried some Philips earhook (http://www.philips.co.uk/c/headphones/shs8105_10/prd/)jobbies which do stay put a bit better but are still prone to dislodging.

I now use normal foam earplugs and some in-helmet speakers (got some old Sony DJ type headphones off ebay and took the high sensitivity drivers out and fitted them in the helmet). This is easily the most user-friendly set-up, no issues with putting helmet on/off, though the sound quality obviously isn't anywhere near as good as with in-ear. No flimsy wires dragging round the edge of the helmet though, I use nice robust Autocom type lead with a stout socket and a velcro patch on my jacket to keep it out of the way.

I really think the only satisfactory solution is custom moulded in-ear with speakers fitted, but like you the cost is putting me off. You can get DIY (http://www.diyearplugsonline.com/index.html)moulding kits (2-part silicone mix putty), how well they work depends entirely on how well you can make the plugs though. For what it costs it might be worth giving the DIY kit a try, and graft your own speakers/buds into them.

Yep, we know you're cheap ;)

I think there a lot of work in fitting the earphones into the custom moulded earplugs and the quality of the speakers is good (it should be for £170!)

If they were made in China they'ed be much cheaper, but at least if you get any problems you can return them to get them sorted out?

I might give those DIY kits a try, will probably be a trial and error with the first one.

Oh, forgot to add, there is also these Slicsound (http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m570.l1313&_nkw=slicsound&_sacat=See-All-Categories) widgets which are sort of generic mouldings which are intended to accept most earbuds. Considering they can be had for so little dosh it'd be worth a shot. I was toying with getting some but they were around a fiver, but they seemed to have dropped dramatically in price so may be a limited offer.

One of the custom moulding lot ( ACS (http://www.hearingprotection.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=55&Itemid=71) ) actually sell them as a cheapo option, so presumably they do have some credibility.

personally i don't have an issue with headphones, so cant add too much to this, i use similar to the ones you do, if anything mine are a little bigger, but as long as i have the correct bud in, i dont have an issue, once in a blue moon i might need to take lid off and put back on again. I also have found that using a balaclava helps no end with headphones.

However for those of you that don't want music, just block the sound out, these guys are much cheaper than the sites listed, plus repeat ones are much cheaper, and the are tested for use in the water....more bang for your buck.

Your surfplugs are the same price as my custom moulded ear plugs, and look to be made the same way and fit the same as mine do.

I stand corrected, i followed Speedplays link not yours, as it looked to be the same, and the first one on his are £140 i think it was, the basic ones were closer to the bottom.

You are correct, my bad. just down to personal preference then i suppose.
