Proposal to hold AR11 at Wem, Shropshire

This is the short version. A much longer version, with more research and pics, will appear as a separate thread, once I do the photobucket links. 'K?

1. Haven’t we been to Shropshire? Do we want to go again?

Yes, we have, AR2006 was at Montford Bridge, Shrewsbury. It was 5 years ago, and the membership on the board has changed dramatically, in numbers and in make-up:thumright:
This proposal is to hold the AR at Wem, in a different part of Shropshire, in fact almost in Cheshire. Completely different route.
So not a re-run, it’s something completely different:p
North Shropshire is flat, and very ‘English’ – rural, hedges, oak trees, large fields, huge skies. And twisty, exciting roads. But once into Wales, it’s a different story! Hills, hills, hills….

2. OK, so where the hell is Wem, and how do you get there?

Small town in north Shropshire, 15 miles north of Shrewsbury. The population is about 8,000. It’s what you’d call ‘quaint’:smt080 Despite its small size and apparent timewarp, it’s the centre of a thriving rural community:smt027
It also has a station (trains go to Shrewsbury or Chester), a Co-Op with very good offie section, and several smaller specialist shops:smt117
Easy to get to, the A49 is the nearest major road, and then a short ride along a country road (B5065). From London it’s 170 miles, M1 or M40/M42, then M6, M54, A5, A49, B5065. From Manchester it’s 60 miles, A49. From Leeds it’s 100 miles, M62/M60 and A49. From Bristol, 135 miles. In other words, not far.

3. So what are you offering?

Camping at Lower Lacon Caravan Park http://www.llcp.co.uk (http://www.llcp.co.uk/)
Friendly site, flat, pro-actively welcomes large bike groups:smt023
Lots of facilities - swim pool, crazy golf, two bars, café sells good and reasonably priced hot food, will put on a hog roast if want
Welcomes well-behaved dogs with responsible owners:smt006
Toilets and showers are spotlessly clean - and work
£7 per night camping, huge flat field at end of site next to the bar
Appropriate B&B nearby:smt015, or mobile homes to rent
Commercial vehicles not allowed on site

4. What about the ride-out?

Shropshire and mid - north Wales have some of the finest bike roads in the UK:riding: Route not finalised yet, nor will it be until I have a better idea of numbers. Likely to go through north Shropshire, and into mid and north Wales. Mike (Luckypants) has offered to help plan. There'll be plenty stops, a mix of roads and scenery, planned to avoid fixed cameras, traffic lights, and accident spots.
Start and end from the camp site.
I would be TEC

5. What if it rains?

Sorry I can’t control this, rain is a fact of life! However there’s hard stand for the bikes, and the bar is inside. There are also several pubs in Wem. We could have a large marquee or gazebos, leccie provided.
The ride would go ahead, whatever the weather:sunny: unless it was completely unsafe (unlikely).

6. Can I bring my mates? Can I come for the day? What if I want to come to the AR but don’t want to do the ride?

Yes:salut: but must follow the rules. ‘Knob-faced knobsters’ are not welcome:smt019
Would be nice if they registered as members so we know who we’re talking to. Yes you can come for the day - likely 9.30am start. The site has a heated pool, two bars, a pool table, games machines, etc. Several pubs in Wem. Or ride the local roads into Shrewsbury.

7. Sounds good to me, what are the not so goods?

Some noise from the nearby train line – but not much
Site will not allow outside caterers – but no need - on-site facilities are good
Limited leccie hook up for tents and site not keen on gennies – but most wouldn’t want it anyway
Still a long way for Scottish, Irish and Manx members – can’t do anything about this I’m afraid.

8. What else can you offer?

I liked the Yeovil welcome, a free tinnie on arrival was great:drink: I’d repeat.
I intend to bring some home brew:drink: with
Clothing – if Paul will repeat (hint!!)
Laminated name tags
Ride might even stop off at my gaff for tea:D

Looks excellent, great proposal Ed.

Edit - Ed I hope you dont mind, but I looked at the rules page for the site, with regard to dogs it says this :

"All dogs must be kept on leads and not left unattended during your stay on the park and please clean up after them"

Yeah well sorry about that mate. It's not as far as Hay.

I've done a really detailed piece, it's a question of uploading the pics to photobucket and copying all the links, I just haven't had time to do it.

On the dogs thing, yes I know that's what it said on the website:-dd

Stupid me forgot to say, yes there is a date restriction. The campsite already has a block booking for the first 2 weeks of August.

Brill work Ed, you have put some effort in and looks great. Dates dependant I will be there minus Samson so I can get slaughtered this year :)

This looks good Ed.

What's the crack with the electric hook-ups? Do you have to book your pitch or is it first come first served?

I take it people who have taken dogs to the AR in the past just don't do the rideout? Fizz's quote on the website regarding the dogs is a very good point, you can't leave them alone during the day. I would try to get Sandrine to join in this year, which means she can bring the car, the big tent and the dog, but she might want to do the rideout. Could put the dog into kennels, but I don't like doing that when we are camping, I feel like he should be with us. If there was a local kennel where you could book the dog in just from early Saturday morning to Saturday evening, that may be a useful facility for some of the dog owners to have.

Wem isn't actually too bad to get to from Ireland, there are ferrys from Dublin to Holyhead, then about 2 hours ride from there.

What Ed says about NW police is true, but what does worry me in NW on occasion is that b****y helicopter that wastes taxpayers money by being used as the worlds most expensive speed camera. You don't need to be riding like a complete knob for it to snap you doing 80mph in a 60 limit. I have only ever seen it operating within 10-15 miles of the North Coast though, so as long as we weren't going too close up towards Conwy we may be OK. Maybe Luckypants or xXBadgerXx can tell us more about where/when it tends to operate.

Kennels - good idea, I'll check it out.

this place looks great to me, i have one question if i may? will this place allow us to have a fire? that was about the only thing i was disappointed with this year, no fires were allowed! :smt077

I think somehwre in the long version there is the information that there COULD be a fire. It would need Ed or someone to sort out a raised fire bucket type of container, so I guess a 'watch this space' is appropriate.

I think somebody forgot to tell this to the Sunday crew :-D

so although the site is a little sensitive about noise, I don’t think we’d disturb anyone, not least with a pub in the way.

Just a question...
Could this be a problem? We weren't exactly quiet this year, and I assume previous years were similar.

Exactamundo... I gotta contact a farmer I know to see if he will lend us a bucket.

No I don't think so, we're quite a way away from the caravans. What would cause irritation is if we all rode back at 11.30pm and revved engines etc as the road goes through the CV part of the site. Given that they have karaoke etc I honestly don't think it an issue.
