View Full Version : absoultely random stupid question - how far can you push a dealer?

Paul the 6th

Scenario: There's 2 KTM Adventure 950's in a dealers showroom.

1. 2004 Adventure 950 in orange.
39,500 miles, no service history, test ride proves it runs sweet as, needs new brake pads and fresh brake fluid. Bodywork is in great condition.

2. 2005 Adventure in silver.
19,000 miles, comprehensive service history, been stood for 2 months, consumeables look ok. Heated grips, gel seat and engine bars fitted... One or two minor marks on bodywork and it's a few hundred quid more than the orange one.

The silver one is the one to buy - it's got paperwork to prove it's been looked after and it's half the miles...... But you want an orange ktm, not a silver one. Do you reckon the dealer would be interested in swapping the bodywork over or would they tell me to stop being so bloody stupid?

I think the answer would be a big fat NO, or get Dominic Littlewood on the case.

The latter, stop being so bloody stupid ;) it wouldn't match what's on the V5 form either so doubt they'd agree to it

I love Rictus' KTM and that's not orange :)

Stop being a poooof, you're supposed to be riding the bike, not drooling over the colour :-P

I keep getting the thought "well if I'm going to buy a silver bike I may as well just buy a stupid honda"....

not sure where that's coming from but it's a depressing way to see the world. Buying a silver KTM would be like buying a bright green R1, or a blue ducati.. it just won't work.

Hiya Maria,

just incase you're not 100% about these things, ktm's signature colour is orange. Hope this helps

Well aware of that Paul, but I know I've never seen a silver KTM, are they more unusual? In which case that would be a selling point for me. Also silver would go well with orange accessories if you really wanted to be a tart about it :-D

Anyway, thought you adored your SRAD?

Its always worth an ask!. Some may, some may not. It would take a fair bit of labour to do, but not impossible. The colour can be changed on the V5 no problem.

Silver and orange? You're sick maria.

I do adore the SRAD but after doing this.....

I've found myself progressively riding more and more like an absolute nob on the roads in an attempt to find the buzz I used to get before I went on track. If I keep it up I'm gonna end up in lots of trouble or lots of pain, and I really don't wanna be that idiot who crashed his srad into a tractor on the north york moors..

Also, big adventure bike can get the missus on the back without making the bike handle like a stock sv, and with alot more comfort :)

so the dealer is gonna tell me to swivel I guess :(

bleurgh I knew I shouldn't have said anything about the ktm yew guys!

there's something about the orange which makes it look more rugged and mean than the subtle silver..

Never been pillion on one but if you get a Renazco seat you and your pillion will love it, plenty of people do long trips with pillions and no complaints from them...

In all honesty if you really have set your heart on an orange ADV then keep looking till you find a suitable one. They do come up, patience is the key. Its not like they are the only 2 in the country right? Also a bike like that you could ride it home where ever you get it from. Try not to pressure yourself into THAT one, its a lot of cash and personally id rather do it right.

This is just one example (http://www.ktmforum.co.uk/bikes-bits-sale/62699-05-950-adventure-sale.html), fully blinged with everything you need with room for a bit of a haggle. If you hover your cursor over the link it even that turns orange! :p

Already been ping'd about that one by one of the guys from the ktm forum. Think that's the main thing Amp, at the price the dealer has dropped to, the silver bike is the one to have - but I'll forever be looking at the orange ones thinking "Blimey they don't half look saucy in orange!"... It's easy to let your heart jump into your mouth after a test ride and sign on the dotted line without really thinking what you're doing but I'm taking my time :)

yeah, if you buy another seat.

Yer but 40k on the clock? I know its not really that high for a bike designed to tour but no service history for that amount of miles? Fook that. Get an orange one. But find one that is the best all round compramise.

Rubbish, you've not seen how deep my paintwork is then ;)

Bikes gotta tick all the boxes. Looks is one of them.

In regards to the poster, I very much doubt it. BUT, if you don't at least ask, you don't get. Not hard to fillout a few forms to send off to the DVLA. But I very much doubt it.

Anyway, you could always buy the silver one, and source some panels after? Im sure they come up on egay and such, or on the KTM forums.

Sorry Paul, silver is gayer than bumming a bloke while your mate watches - not suitable for a KTM, more a BMW thing if you're into leather and kinky whips, you get the idea...;)

Stick it out and look for an orange one if you want that colour, they're not that rare yet...

I've seen a full set of bodywork for a 950 's' on ebay in same colour as yours wolfie... £900!!!

You know how I know you're gay? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tU0xkgCRFAw)You have a bumper sticker on your ktm with a rainbow which says "I love it when balls are in my face."

And yesh, silver is gayer than humous, rose and creme brulee in a gay bar drinking woo woo whilst discussing leather or latex. Independent adventure man orange for me please :)

Sounds about right once you start to add up the bits you'll need. The fuel tanks are likely to be the most expensive parts by far as they're plastic, different kettle of fish compared to metal tanks...

Unfortunately not mate, moved onto vodka and diet lemonade now - no hangovers  I can't afford to keep it and have another bike, and I don't want to have to spend £99-£149 everytime I want to have some fun on track. I've proved to myself that I can get my kneedown and look fast on photographs, so now I'm gonna get my head down and do some proper riding :D

apart from plastic tank and bodywork colours, and 35mm higher seat, do most of the accessories still just bolt straight on? or are there any significantly different dimensions on things like the subframe? gonna be looking for panniers and topbox, akra exhausts and a few other bits but that'll be next year :D

Plastic tanks are universal within 950 and 990 series regardless off age or "S" - 990 tank has internal fuel pump so different to 950

Seat heights varied with year but all the S models are ~2" taller than the non-S of the same year

AFAIK pretty much any accessory will fit most if not all bikes, little things like the speedo pickup are different on the newer S models as the ABS bikes use the ABS sensor to measure, but things like panniers and exhausts are pretty universal

what's wrong with that guy's accent? Is he ok?

the 640's look like a good laugh if you're thinking of going proper off-roading on the regular. I'm a bit of a poof so I'll just be bimbling around and occaisionally nipping into fields to pretend that I'm doing the dakar

He's Canadian....in all seriousness I think his accent is a bit rural, the only time I've come across accents like that in Canada is when I was in more remote areas..the "aboot" instead of "about" etc are more pronounced...

Anyway, I would be like you, as long as it gets mucky from time to time I'd be happy, it doesn't have to be riding trails where wheels get buckled :) A quick blast over bumps would be good enough!

I must confess seeing all this talk about supermoto and adventure bikes I am seeing has got me steering in a different direction for the next bike...but the obligatory demo rides will tell me what I want (min' 1 year away yet, I only just bought an SV )...
