Hi
Looking at a 05 reg triumph sprint st1050 ABS at weekend at local dealer

Up for £4500 , mileage low < 10k , 1 owner

Any one know if it's a fair price

Never had a bike with ABS , good or bad ?

Any known faults to check on the sprint ?

Cheers Steveg

faults; oil burning is a big one
get hold of bluefish he had a nightmare with his first 1050

Oil Burning does not sound good .... wonder if its a common problem ?

From what I've read the main downer is the triumph servicing costs , but do really fancy one , will see how the test ride goes

All engines burn oil but what do you consider excessive? My triple has 42K on the clock and uses about 250-350cc of oil every 5000 miles[top up from lower oil level to full] and the service costs like any bike, Honda,BMW,Dukes,Kwaks all fall into expensive main dealer service costs.
Every now and then you hear of a rogue bike and you only have to take a prolonged look at what has been posted over the years on here about SVs and other manufacturers to realise this.
Have a test ride and get a cast iron warranty, even if it is only a dealers warranty. You will know within a 1000miles if you have a problem or not

Well Steve I love mine, it's ace.
Not loving triumph ATM though, my rear pads wore out in 2500 miles and warped the rear disc in the process, they wouldn't replace under warranty, cost me £200.

Gearbox can get a bit funny when hot, not as good as sv IMO.

They do go like stink as well, will do a indicated 160 + mph, quite easy.
Get one, you'll love it, £5k would get you a 06,07 wouldn't it ?

Thanks for the replies , looking forward to trying a sprint , have riden a sprint rs which I liked so recon st1050 will be a good choice

Am feeling guilty about chopping in my sv as not missed a beat in 55k and never needed a drop of oil between services and only bike I've ever owned from new

Considering some horror stories you hear you are lucky. My SV had a few problems and I had it for two years from new.

p.s. hold on at 6000rpm:)

Youll have to come out next year with the madlands lot, show off the new trumpet :)

Cracking bikes, comfortable and sure footed plenty quick enough; panniers are not as big as they look, don't take a full face helmet. The top box will, and it's possible to buy a bigger non Triumph one that will take two.

My 46L givi takes two full size lids no problem.

yeah, i had an 06 sprint with about 12000 on the clock which liked to drink a bit at least 2ltrs to 1000 miles so after failing to sort it i was upgraded to a 08 1050 that has not used a drop in 4000 miles, happy days, but you have to be a bit carefull of the right hand lol.

And why would you want to put your lid in your panniers, surely if panniers are fitted they would have stuff in them, you don't ride around with them on just to put your lids in, do you?.

Used to on the 955ST, now I use the topbox for that:-)

As E of E says the panniers on the 955 are much bigger and handy to put your helmet in when you park up instead of carrying it about with you. Due to the increase in volume I have never found the need for a top box. The panniers on the ST do not protrude any wider than the mirrors and before some sarky git mentions it they are not just big crash bungs;)

Good morning all.

Sprint 1050's seem pretty reliable, & aren't too costly when it comes to servicing.
I believe there was a recall on them. It was to do with the rear suspension linkage. It would be worth checking that it's been sorted.

Cheers.

SteveG,Obviously depending on your finances, but the performance between the 955i and the 1050 isnt really all that great due to the increase being for emissions. Its very akin to the pionty and curvy SV both in performance and looks only both versions are fi engines. The 955i has bigger panniers and a bigger tank and a lot cheaper to buy.

Steve, have you asked a similar question on the triumph sprint forum ? I have seen a post on there and thought it may be you ;)

Yep asked the same question ;)

Had a two hour demo today from Knotts at Stratford did about 80 miles once getting out of the trerrible Stratford traffic

Bike was 06 blue with 23k miles

http://www.sgrazier.plus.com/Images/sprint1050.jpg

Comfort - brilliant fitted me like a glove (6ft /15st) and was amazingly comfortable

Engine / gearbox - lots of laid back power makes big over takes easy , did not seem to like to hold a constant throttle at lower revs , overall a cracking engine :), greatbox good but not as slick as the sv

Handling / ride quality - Strange mix of soft and comfortable suspension however still nice taught handling excellent set up for the road , only problem I noticed was a lot slower turn in and more effort required than the sv but its probably just me being used to the sv

Brakes - front brakes were good (alot better than sv) but not amazing felt like they needed a good service and the sprint rs I rode before had better brakes

Fairing Needs a double bubble as screen very low , think later sprints had different screen? Mirrors wobble alot

Overall would really consider the sprint as an ideal replacement for the sv , only problem is that they only offered 800 quid for my sv so no go at the moment

Will also get a test ride on a sprint 955i to compare against a sprint 1050 as already mentioned a lot cheaper :)

Cheers Steveg

The brakes tend to feel a little"Down" but believe me don't grab a handful unless its an ABS. Suspension at that mileage and age probably has never been touched so fresh oil wouldn't go amiss.DB screen?I have a touring screen and you could have tea and cake behind it going along. The SV has a very slick gear change and most other bike feel stiff in comparison but the Triumph frees off abit after 30K miles
The reason I still have my 955i and its the older 108bhp model is that I can't find anything as comfortable for me
6ft 2inches and similar weight to yourself.

steveg, is that the 05 model you test rode, from 07 the bars are a bit higher and a higher screen, not a lot though and from 08 metal tank. Recon you got all the valid points from your test, now buy one lol. ps That one looks like my old oil burner ;)

Hi
I rode a 06 which I think has the same handle bar set up as 05
Looking at riding a later model with higher bars to compare , but tbh this model was really comfy , did need a higher screen though

Going to test ride a few more when I can get the time :)

Steveg,The 1050 leans towards the "Sport" riding position where as the older 955 more "Touring" position, which I find more comfortable for me,it depends what you want the bike for.Neither are uncomfortable its just what I have become used too and I mentioned the brakes before but I think a better description of the feel is "Progressive".
I don't know if you intend carrying a pillion but if you are, consider the exhaust position i.e. under seat or side slung

In the end it is what you want and what you find best for your needs,
I'm only trying to point out the subtle differences between the two models not influence your decision

Steve , pure triumph in brum are always more than happy for you to take a bike out if you wanna take a newer sprint out to compare.
I test rode both the sprint and tiger on full day tests on each bike, If you have the time, take one for at least half a day.

Thanks for the heads up

Knotts were good for a test ride and Action m/cs is close and they are fine aswell

spoilt for choice :)

I haven't ridden one and a slight derail but has anybody ridden the new GT Sprint?
IMO it is the cross over between the older and newer Sprints, touring orientated, with a few more extras
but as it is new model, still a bit out of my price range.

according to the latest Ride mag the st is better, and a lot cheaper and looks better and... ;)

Why I still have my old one;)

In truth I just can't see the benefit of parting with my bike and £5500 to own one when what I have does exactly the same but more comfortable,--------plus being tight:D
