Hmmm, I think this looks alright, but I`ll need to cut off the curvy light mount and make up a new mount.
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l210/leebex/cars%20and%20stuff/053-1.jpg
Obviously I`ll need to make a suitable undertray and plate hanger. I was thinking about getting all the plastics from a pointy, but would be just as much work to make it all fit. Although if I could get it cheap enough it may look better.
Id also need to sort out some sort of fill panel for either side of the rear light.

Could look good. The devil is in the detail
Looks good so far, will be interested to see the end product
Get to it ;)
Lee, it looks like your basic winter tidy up is growing arms and legs :D.
Anyway, that light looks like a nice idea. I suppose if you used pointy plastics all the bodging would be to the subframe so would be hidden.
I do think the curvy plastics would be better though, providing you can tidy up the gaps. Darren's right, the detail there will make or break it.

Lee you have got me interested, i will be watching closely
Ive drawn up a paper template this evening of the mounting plate that would be required to fit the light to the curvy subframe.
The standard rear lamp mount must be cut off, then my new bracket will have to be welded on. I cant weld, but have spoken to one of the welders at work who will happily weld on my bracket for me. ( as the rear end is in bits taking in the subframe is no biggie)
Until I cut off the standard rear light mount I cant fully mock up my pointy light mount, so thats tomorrows job( the pointy light hits the curvy light mount before it fits flush)
Another job is number plate light, I keep looking at the rear light and thinking 2 more LEDs facing down would keep it clean looking.
As said by others, its the detail, and mainly the gaps either side of the light that need dealing with. Ive looked at ABS sheet, but then thought about gauze and fibre glass, it is after all only 2 small portions, maybe cover with carbon fibre vinyl.
I would love to try pointy plastics, but id need all of it, plus the seats and grab rail (currently only have the light and its centre trim piece.)and theyre not the cheapest items either.
Looking again at the pic at the top of the thread, if I use the undertray mod template, adjusted to suit the light, that again may work ok, and allow me to use a couple of leds for the plate light

The tail light is the only good thing about a pointy ;-)

true, hence why im attempting to fit it, I hate the standard curvy rear end.

Every one is entitled to have an opinion...
Even when it is a ludicrously wrong one! :D
This should be interesting, I have been saying for ages that a curvy frame with pointy plastics and lights would look really cool. Yes, I know... I will burn for my heresy! :smt059

Just buy a pointy :D
You know its the logical thing to do ;)
my mod will cost me about £20 all in, cant get a pointy for that :D and its going to have a uk spec euro type light, pointys dont have those projector lights either :thumright:

erm not sure yet :p have thought about ABS sheet, or even glassfibre and gauze of some sort. just test fitting and getting ideas together. If it comes to it, I may just have to bite the bullet and fit a pointy rear end, but not at that point yet :D

Little update: I cut off the curvy light mount, and have been able to see where the pointy light will actually sit, and have drawn up some template brackets.
All being well i`ll get them cut out at work in the next few days (hopefully when no ones looking while I should be doing some actual work)

Cool. Keep us updated :)
just a little taster, I think im finally settled on the snow plough eliminator and new number plate bracket.
Drawn up so many templates I think ive got it sussed, maybe :D. Ive had to make an extra cutout on the undertray plate to but upto the rear light.
Ive drawn up the number plate holder, albeit on on paper, hence the slightly downward angle, but when I held the plate against it, it should look aright.
As for the number plate light, theres room for a surface fitting unit, but not the standard one, its a little too big.Another option is to cut a clear panel into the lower portion in the rear light, but what glue is ok with abs as im sure thats what the lense is made off.

Ive also made up the card templates for the small infills either side of the rear light, may use a mesh panel or abs sheet.

Aint looking too bad, plenty of time to get it done before the good weathers here again
I was worried id never get it done in time, now ive got a draft drwan up I can refine it more.
Was going to make the undertray in stainless, mainly as its free from work( providing I rumage through the offcuts from the sheet metal guys), but will buy an ally sheet instead, as i prefer working with aluminium.
I cheated for the indicators though and have bought a load of angle brackets from B&Q, they have a shelf full of different sizes and thicknesses.
finally got my 2 plates made up at work after lots of arsing around with card templates.

The undertray is the Zunkus item, but with the necessary cut out for the pointy light. Its formed in 2mm ally and Ive permanently borrowed ;) some edging rubber trim for the section round the rear light.
The number plate mount is made from 1.5mm stainless. I cant weld, so a work mate in the welding bays welded it for a can of coke :p:p
I did toy with getting it powder coated, but have sprayed it satin black for now as I want to see how well it works first.
Final fitting next week some time.

Just remember that had you taken the front rnd of a Pointy and put it together with the rear of a Curvy you would have a Purvy...
You however added the rear of a Poiny to your Curvy, making it a Cu, well you can work it out...
:)
Nice work :)

Good work too Lee, make sure you get the details/templates for this as Im sure there will be a fair few out there looking to get them self a cun** if you pull it off.

Soulkiss you have a perverted but clever mind.. makin me giggle like a lil kid..
:D did make me chuckle, will be fitting it all this week, as got the rest of the bike back together at last.
Your not wrong on the plate angle Chris, has been one of the many issues with this as everything has moved frontwards, why cant those little number plates be legal :p

Ace, that was.
Well done!
thats a substantial plate hanger!! ?
I was going to put a solo unit on my curvy and mount the pointy rear lights upside down. The wife at the time though decided she wanted to go pillion so the project never went ahead.
The rear light is not the only good thing from a pointy. the clocks are too. But that's all.

I thought there were problems in compatability when swapping the clocks between the pointy and curvy I could be wring but i thought it was something to do with the speedo sensor been anologue as opposed to digital.
yorkie_chris
13-12-10, 07:22 PM
Speedo sensors are both digital.
I have put GSXR K1 speedo on mine. Works fine, only problem is tacho jumps about a bit, I think it needs an inductive pickup rather than direct.

So a straight swap is possible provided you modify/self build a surround/mount for it.

Which is the exact same problem with the pointy clock on a curvy.

None of that, it bolts on fine, electrically it needs the changes.
heres the latest pics, almost done, but needs bracing up as the vibes at tickover make it shake a little.

heres under the seat, limited room to what was there, got to mount the electrics, might make up a little plate for the box to sit on.

Ive also made up 2 infill panels to go either side of the rear light, yet to be fitted.

Looking good :)
Why have you got a numberplate bracket fitted on top of your numberplate bracket ?
just to give it a safe distance from the back wheel really, thats all ;)
Looking good.
Only one thing I'd change, and that's junk the standard plate hanger and mount the plate directly onto the sheet you fabricated after cutting it down a bit. You'll also find the number plate light won't illuminate much of the plate if you use the standard hanger
just to give it a safe distance from the back wheel really, thats all ;)
I see someone else asked the same question at the same time. Ummm... your fabricated bracket is as close to the back wheel as the plate would be if it was mounted directly to it, so the standard hanger is a bit unnecessary
theres about 10mm in it, as i did pop the number plate on my made up bracket first, it prob will be ok as im a lightweight and ride without pillion, but as i had it thought i best play safe.
I could of course just added a flat nut to space it out, :D

Did you discuss whether you needed a seperate number plate light or would the light from the rear light be sufficient?
I'd loose that bulky number plate light, just to slide the number plate up a bit more and give it a cleaner look IMHO
Mines got one of these Evotech led numberplate lights (little black cyclindrical thingy at the top of the tail tidy)

Lose that train of thought completely as it's f***ing barmy.
The suspension needs to be free to travel its full freedom of movement without hitting owt, end of.
Erm, had lazy head on for that part, from what I could gather, the light isnt an MOT issue, just construction and use, and should be white light.
So my lazy head thought, agh, sod the agro of having to source a plug to suit the LED number plate light, I`ll use a pointy one which is smaller than the curvy type.
Although in the end I had to buy a connector and crimps to change the pointy rear light plug to suit, so um sure I coudl have found something.
Want to keep it as interchangeable as possible really. Although im noticing that the whole section could do with being made out of 2mm stainless instead of the 1.5mm i opted for.
Another downside is I cant use the rear light trim piece that fits down the centre, as It wont fit, and whats left would look odd.
its still a work in progress, and im open to any suggestions, and expect i`ll make or fit new bits as i go, and if things dont function as I want them to.

hence why the plate was moved out a tad. I should really remove the rear shock and move the swing arm up and down to see what happens.

Yeah just don't say "cos I am light and don't take a pillion" as you can guarantee some idiot will read that and miss the point of what actually needs to work!
Very true, got be careful on the way things are misinterpreted :p:p:p hopefully the extra few mm height of the srad shock can all be added in, but to be honest only once im out tearing up some miles I`ll not be really sure how it will work.
When Im back here with pics of a broken number plate, then we`ll know :p:p:p:p:p
Oh finished pic please ;)
All ive done so far is to make up some new infills for either side of the rear light from thin plastic and sprayed them black to see what it looks like.
Its better than in this picture, (that was silver gaffa tape to try and keep the water out, the standard snow plough does a good job at keeping water spray to a minimum :smt098) but im not happy with them, the complex shape needs work to get it looking right. Ive been thinking about getting a tub of filler out and seeing what I can make.
gave the sv a much needed clean so thought Id post up a pic, its done 30k now.
Ive got a few jobs to finish, the fairing lowers and the under seat infills are off being smoothed and cleaned up and will be done in the proper yellow. I also must get round to making the small infills for each side of the pointy light.
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l210/leebex/035.jpg
The wood block is just to hold the bike upright a bit for cleaning.
Lee
Maybe the fine mesh used in vents might look the part .
