View Full Version : Which bike to use for trackdays?
I know I could get the :-({|= treatment on this but hear me out :)
I'm thinking of doing 2 trackdays back to back 13th and 14th November. In the past i've always done them on my ninja and had a bloody good time. Only problem is I'm not happy with the dunlops that are on it right now and anyways they wont stand up to both days so would need replacing.
Dilemma i've got is new tyres getting fitted to the SV tomorrow, cheapo pair of Michelin Pilot Sports £115 for the pair :D so it'd be a lot cheaper for me to kill them than get a new set on the ninja as well.
Only problems I can see with the SV is its unfaired so not ideal for the straights! And its done 32k miles. Its had a bit of a caning from me in the past (would be my 1st trackday on it though) but i've treated it to new parts and had it serviced whenever it needed it. So do you think its a good idea to take my 11yr old naked SV to the track? I know i'll have a blast on it i just don't want to kill it

SV is great fun on a track, especially if its mainly corners like Mallory or Rockingham National.
1st is at Mallory so could use the SV to p!ss some sports bikes off :smt079
Then Silverstone which would suit the ninja more
Love it when a plan comes together

Mallory will be fine on the SV, you might get totally beaten up at Silverstone though, I hear it's a fast track

do the SV for both as U'll embarras them at Mallory and annoy a few in the slow bits at silverstone
I've just watched a few vids of Mallory Park trackdays, SV all the way :D i'll get murdered on the start/finish straight and then ride round the outside of them at Gerards  hairpin and bus stop should be a bit fun too!
Went to BSB @ Silverstone the other month, the SV would be lost round there so open and fast i've definitely got to get the ninja on. Part worn pair of diablo supercorsas off ebay perhaps :-k

I was thinking for the ninja actually dave and it takes a funny sized front tyre. Might give him a try for the SV though save my new michelins :-)

stupid 120/65/17 isnt it, should have no issues with a 120/70

Its a pain in the @rse  i've always gone off the recommendation of my mechanic mate and stuck with 120/65 but does limit your choice a bit.
Anyways i've PM'd Berlin see what hes got cluttering his place up I could take off his hands :D wouldnt say no to a sticky set for the SV at mallory muahahaha :smt077

Typical speeds for Mallory are about 110 or something before braking on the main straight, and around 80mph through Gerrards, so it's well in SV territory.

I know, mines got crapstones on it at the moment looking at michelin's for it couldnt find any in 120/65

Corrected for you ;)

Now see I had bridgestone bt014s on when I did Snetterton and went better than i've ever done, loved them tyres. Only guys faster than me in the inters was a guy on an RSV4 and a couple of track bikes. I've never had michelins fitted because of the cost but read on a few Kawasaki forums the grip from some of them is appalling and doesnt match the bike  went cheaper and got a pair of Dunlop D207s fitted instead and they're garbage, grip is like falling off a cliff 1 minute its there next minute its not

All down to preference, the main reason is i had a new set of 021's on my SV in 3500 miles the front was dead and although its well documented that early 021 fronts were **** poor then bridgestone would not back down and came up with loads of cack about why it wore so quickly, not being suited for the bike was one yet their site says its fine, i hear nothing but good about pilot road 2's and even had pilot power 2ct's on my sv and they were great from the word go so sticking with michelins now :D
I must admit, I checked my front tyre yesterday for the first time and I'm down to the wear markers basically and the edges are very very low. That's on an 021 with about 3.5k miles.
Sounds just like how mine went
Ok my brother in law is now geggin in on my fun and will be doing Silverstone with me :) so now i'm trying to figure out whether 3 bikes will fit into the back of a SWB transit  i'm thinking theres no fecking way

100mph as you tip in and hold it steady through til 3/4 round then start to wind on the power as you lift onto the straight to Edwinas, then gas hard down to the braking point. Gerards has a weird line to get it right

D207s are great tyres ... if you love crashing.
I wouldn't touch them with a disinfected bargepole.
Actually, I wouldn't touch any Dunlops at all, every one I've tried has been abysmal

:salut: so determined am I to take the SV i'm off to a place on Tuesday that hires out big @ss flat bed trailers (14ft x 6ft6 and bigger) bout 1/3 of the price of hiring a tranny too.
I just need my brother in law to make sure when he passed his driving test for towing the trailer purposes and we could be on to a winner :D
