My only advantage of being old I suppose :smt038
They are a bit cheeky.
I paid £320 to insure my 600rr 6 months ago, they wanted another £340 to insure the ducati for the final 6 months. I can get insurance got year for a little over £400 but I want the years ncd.

ah good. Prices have gone up but across the board on average it's supposed to only be around 20%. Maybe she's in a group it's risen most for??

We got our renewal at 991 quid. went on the compare site, shopped around and got an online quote of 427quid. SO we rings them up, they have the quote in front of them, and they go through the details and then say
errrrrrr nope its actually 1300 quid:smt091
Its a software error!
Thought they had to honour the quote, feckers:smt070
Anyway went away after telling them to foook right off, and went back to our current insurers, who can still only give us it at 880!!
Apparently its because I am a newly qualified driver, even though they gave us 50 quid back for my being added to Pegs policy back in March.....ON L PLATES!!!!!
Its jumped up 400 quid just for me, if I didn't have the kids, I'd just take me off and leave the car to Peg.
Not a happy bunny, as even with a monthly DD, we can't chew that much:(

I wouldn't mind but I'm mid 30s, so insurance shouldn't be like it is for the under 25s.
Even when you tell them you've been a road user with six years no claims they couldn't give a monkeys.
Note to self, don't crash the poofwaggon and prove them right, new driver, too bigger car!
Thats the trouble, im 19 and male so basicly im going to write off every single car or bike i even look at
My car renewal was due 1st October. I had changed my car mid July. When I did this it cost me £52 or something like that till the end of the policy (of which about £30 was the admin fee) So I didn't think it would be so bad come renewal.... £894!
I finally managed to get it to £530ish, which having looked today my old car was a group 5 insurance this new one is a 14! Considering I paid £400ish for my insurance last year, I'm not to dishearten!
I've got a higher excess until I turn 25 in may, but I had to shop around, and when I tried to play one of from the other they had know of it. My old insurer wanted to try and match and I gave them the opportunity but as soon as I said how much I could get it for to her she said she knew she wasn't going to get close and would cancel the auto renewal!

No they don't have to honour it, this is why I don't like comparison sites they make certain 'assumptions' about you, I've rung up before to clarify a price and (same as you) they've quoted a much more expensive price, had I have bought online the insurance would have been invalid. (which is why you always have to check your statement of fact!)

BBC quoted 20% on average and a 3rd for young drivers IIRC

Probably not far off being right I was getting quotes of about 2800 for my new (to me) volvo S40 and its only a 1.6 I had a 1.6 Rover coupe and was only paying 1600 for that. In the end up I'm paying 2000 with tesco but I had to use the no claims off my bike which means im paying more on my bike insurance as well now.

be carefull lilly I queried the age related excess and was told that it was implimented at the begining of the policy NOT the age you are if you claim,
so if your 24 when the policy starts the under 25 excess will apply throught your entire policy... (they may be wrong but this was from hastings)

just got my insurance renewal through for my 2005 ford ranger wildtrack pick up which I've owned from new...
I'm 40 years old, have 9+ years no claims, a clean licence, I.A.M. (Bike) - last year was £320 this year's renewal £716...... (also got 10 years no claims on the bike)
I've been phoning around and the cheapest so far is £440...
I'm fuming... I was knocked off my bike in 2008 by 3rd party hitting me from the side, and being the honest decent person I am I never claimed for any injuries (as i didnt really get hurt) even though one one the companies obviously sold my details to a personal injuries ambulance chaser type company. Guess who may put in a claim now

All things a relevant when you buy a car and the one thing I check is the insurance group.Purchasing the vehicle is the easy part, thinking about road tax, insurance and maintenance costs will probably be the things lowest on your agenda. Nice shiney that you like blinds common sense sometimes.
Learning on a vehicle and suddenly finding a big jump in the premium when you pass your test can be based on while you are learning the person with the ultimate responsibility for the vehicle is the person instructing you,not you as driver.
Dizzy quoted some figures earlier but remember that is a V6 -22mpg-174bhp-4x4, not a normal car and if you buy a vehicle like that you have to expect hefty premiums.
All vehicles are based on performance and cost of repairs so the sportier or bigger performance you buy the higher the premium.
Others may be complaining about age but if you have passed your test at 18 by the time you are 25 you have max n.c.b providing you are accident free, but this is the age group that tend to have most accidents.
Type of insurance--Fully comp-TPFT-TP,usage,annual mileage and garaging or parking facilities along with security are all factors that affect your premium.
It is not so much the value of your vehicle it is the damage you could do with it if involved in an accident to other vehicles or persons.
My personal circumstance mean that I can have any car I want, within reason[Excluding supercars or hyper sports] for a modest premium. This is what comes with age and a good driving record regarding accidents and offences and until you have proved that to insurers you are a higher risk therefore have higher premiums.-----------SIMPLES-------------------

There's more to consider than that too, some cars in a low insurance group which you may think are a sensible choice, aren't because they get crashed a lot by new/young drivers and so are more expensive to insure. Sometimes a bigger more useful motor can be cheaper to insure than some little 1.0l sh*tbox hatchback.

If a car is in a low insurance group it is in a low insurance group, the fact the new/young drivers crash them is the reason new/young drivers pay massive premiums
The car is the same its the drivers that are different.
I can insure a Fiesta fully comp for about £150 for myself and Lyn to drive, yet it will probably cost a 19 year old who has just passed their test over £1000. I do take your point that the young driver should be more selective of vehicle choice,as should anybody buying a car for the first time.
In the end insurance companies have all the information to hand AND if you are willing to pay the premium without shopping about they will take your money.
It is your car you are asking them to insure you to drive it,you picked the car ,not them.

Case in point, cheaper for me (at 22, presuming license just gained) to insure a 1.7TDI astra than a 1.gutless 207.
I think there are more factors in their perception of risk than just insurance group... even with the same driver.

Obviously you have looked into it so I can't disagree
One thing I have noticed is that even if all of the possible variable within an insurance quote stay the same except the date, the price fluctuates wildly. Two months before my insurance was due I got quotes of £800FC, ended up paying about £1100FC, and now (purely to satisfy my curiosity) two months into my policy, I could insure for £800FC again.
DT, I chose my car based on three criteria- cost to buy, mpg, but most importantly, how much it'd cost to insure it. Admittedly, I hadn't really considered the road tax. If I had I would've bought one a year newer that cost a hundred quid less to tax a year. My next car will be chosen on those three criteria plus tax!

well after 3 days of ringing round, online quotes etc I finally got fully comp with business use, legal, european & green lane cover all for £378 from Adrian Flux.
Still going to put the claim in now though....
For those thinking that passing through certain age barriers has a great effect please bear this in mind. I turned 30 this year, gained another year ncd and the premium on my slk decreased by a whopping £6.60
Also I can uderstand the higher premiums for people that have already been road users in the past. I would say that the avaerage premium for a 25 year old that has started driving will still be less than the average 17 year old. It is partly due to experience of controlling the vehicle as well. I fully expected to have a fairly high premium on the bike when I got it this year even though I'd been driving for 13 years.

I don't understand whats going on either.
My insurance was about £600 last year....
This year it's £588, but with the installment interest it comes to about £650. Did some ringing around and all the other quotes came in at over £1000. I have the same car, no new accidents, no new convictions. Only difference now is that I am a home owner....and when I moved addresses the change actually lowered last years payments.
I have just clocked up my 4 years no claims too, so it's not like I've had a dink in the last year or anything.
How can they justify raising prices so much, when the risk is clearly getting lower?

all insurance is linked to investments, with returns being lower on investments, prices have risen in the insurance land.

I'm definitely preferring the down-under system of your road tax covering your compulsory 3rd party insurance.
I'm definitely preferring the down-under system of your road tax covering your compulsory 3rd party insurance.
Sounds like a good idea to me as well, and we'd have no un-insured cars on the road unless they are untaxed.
Lets pressure the government to change the system, insurance companies are thing the royal in my eyes, they make up the rules depending on who you are and where you live.
Appraently who you live with has an effect on the risk of them having an accident... I'd like to know how as any one has the same 50/50 chance of driving into another person unless outside items like ice take over.
I thought that companies that use comparison sites will always charge more to renewing customers as they undercut themselfs for new customers.
TBH, when my insurance comes for renewal i'll be looking at the NFU, they seam cheep enough for most people so i want to see what they offer me.
