I prefer "Smoke-on-Trent" if you please. The Sun's affectionate moniker, after a Pub flouted the smoking ban for a few months back in 2007.

I was talking more about the pun, play on words a "stain on the thames", get it....oh forget it.

lol, good timing.

We went to thorpe park the weekend before last and stayed in staines, we all mentioned how nice the place actually is. Speaking to a taxi driver he said all out of town people make the same comment. Ali G may have put it on the map but he didnt put the nicest spin on it, people hear Staines and think its going to be a chav run 5hit hole. He said it does have its places much like any other town but on the whole its a really nice place. Which from what we saw of it it was a massive improvement on round here. We stayed on the river banks and waking up to a continental breakfast with people rowing just outside the window was quite a suprise.

Fight fire with fire I say...changing the name is just silly.

Call a few TV studios and tell them they can use a few streets free of charge to do some filming on...then publicise it to the max to show the country how nice the place is.

a great idea, some sort of reality show about the town. They seem to be doing the rounds and in the right hands could put a great spin on the place.

Hello from Warwick-on-Avon

What you want is a nice castle, makes everone think the rest of the town is as nice, even though most of it isnt.

They just want to get hyphenated because they have delusions of grandeur.

Who would want to be known for a stinking cess pool, Sorry folks I mean river Thames.

Still I grew up in Whittle-le-Woods, and eventually moved across the border to Clayton-le-Woods. So always been Hyphenated. (Except when I had a brief fling with Telford)

I can see some of you don't live around here!

Okay, it's not all bad around here. And it does seem to bring some chavs from around the area because of the large shopping complex & cinema. Not bad overall, however when you can't compare it with the neighbours to the west, Virginia Water, Egham, Windsor, etc...

I prefer "Smoke-on-Trent" if you please.

When I was up in Crewe, we referred to it (among other things) as "Smoke-on-Stench". Mind you, the population of Crewe don't have much to crow about.

we stayed at a french hotel, macrce on theames or something if you know it. when you entered the town coming from sainsburys you came off the round about and followed the road around to the right then at the main set of lights it was there on your right. Very nice place and Im not sure what the normal cost would be but the weekend ticket for thorpe park inc accomodation ad breakfast was only £65pp bargain.
