Anyhere here recently taken in a BMW for its first service?
According to the car (118D M-Sport) its got 1000 miles due before its first service. That will stick it at about 15.5k miles. I was told at the time of buying the average first service comes in at 18k, unless you've been thrashing it. Oops.
I estimate this to be due around xmas, and I'm panicking becuase I have no idea how much to expect it to be.
I had a friend just take his M3 to get an oil changed and new set of pads all round, set him back £800...:smt103
I have no experience with MOT or servicing costs - my first car was such a banger I did my own servicing, after that I've had lease cars which the servicing was included.
What'dya thunk?

Plus they lie.
Mine will be free.

What ya got BTW
Mines a 118D M Sport, full leather, cruise control, auto lights, wipers, lighting package. 840 miles in the first week of ownership. THink it's run in now.

Mine's lease hire also, but I chose not to have maintenance due to low anticipated mileage, which then doubled a couple months later -.-;
Mine's a 118D M Sport too, not as jazzed out as yours though. Comfort pack (Auto headlights, wipers, interior lights, etc) and the Storage Pack (Cup holders and random storage compartments).
14.5k in 9 months...what's that, 1611 miles a month average. :(
Just out of curiosity scoobs, what MPG does it read out for you? I read about people getting like 50+mpg but my readout says 42.8 most of the time. If I'm lucky it'll go to 43.4 for a bit then back down to 42.8. I have never reset it, ever.
Most of the time I'm getting 470-510 out of a tank.
Top speed, 138! That was slightly downhill with a back wind though :D

Prepare to bend over and take it like a ......
My dad used to have his beemer serviced regularly by BMW, cost a fortune, and he always complained about the cost, but they always sent it back spick and span.

I wouldnt let any garage wash my car with the communal sand block , sorry i mean sponge.
My friend does pro detailing and done a paint correction on a 5 series for a customer at £600 a time.
It went in for service and the customer told BMW NOT to wash it, they did and the paintwork was swirled to fook again.
BMW paid another £600 to have him do it again ;)
I never have bikes or cars washed by any garage, the only person apart from me id trust is my mate, thats it.

IIRC its about £250 I know because the company bought my 318D M sport I weighted up the serviceing pack re individual services..
not a massive amount different but worth it incase the clutch goes.

A call back from the Sevice department.
Looking at Oil + Filter + (I cant believe they charge for this) Service Light Reset at £180
Possibly Micro filter at £50
Then a check up on brakes etc.
Hmm, not toooooooo bad I guess. Still, at £180 I wish I could do it myself...

Will your lease hire company let you take it to a local independent BMW specialist?
hongman

I dont know, but I think now is the time to find out!
How is a local independent BMW specialist different to a dealer? Is it like a joe bloggs garage that has been BMW certified?

why do you bmw drivers pay £105 an hour plus vat for a service when you can take it to your local ford dealer or an independent garage for under£55 an hour

It'll be a smaller garage, so less overheads. Also they are normally staffed by ex main dealer BMW mechanics who have started up on their own, again less overheads etc etc.
As long as they have all the kit to the electronic trickery required on a newer vehicle no reason not to use them.

It costs BMW alot to make those badges you know! ;)

or try shopping outside of the South East.
I know of someone getting to main dealer service quotes and one was cheaper by over £150 purely because it wasn't in London

I take my bm to a known independent specialist and its half the price of a main dealer. Oil changes are pricey on them though as the oil costs a fortune. Mind you with 150k on the clock it seems to be worth the money.
Ball park figures are £100 oil service, £140 inspection 1, £200 inspection 2
dealers suck

just looked up spec on oil for bmw,5w30 fully synthetic seems to be the norm, that works out at about £15 for 5 litre on ebay, same oil at dealers about £32 a can, from a well known car manufacturer.there isn't any thing that special about the oil for a bmw contrary to what they may tell you

Well the stuff that is used in mine is fully synthetic if i remember correctly and costs a bloody fortune. But i dont mind, it doesnt get burnt by the motor and makes it run lovely.

the stuff bmw recommend is castrol motosport tws 10w60 for m series engines £17 a litre
castrol slx ll01 fe 0w30 for valvetronic engines £5 a litre
castrolslx ll04 0w30 not for valvetronic or m models £16 a litre
or you go to a carlube oil from motormania and other shops and get something like 5w30 c3, approved by bmw at £28 for 5 litres

Did a run from Portsmouth to Manchester this week and I got 47.8 which I thought was rather crap. Bit early to say on a regular day to day basis. Only had it a week. I reckon it will be low 40's though. I thought it would be better than that looking at the Gov.t figures (yeah I know they're rubbish). May get better as it gets some miles on it.

Fook. That's some serious mileage. That's yearly motorbike miles for some.

I don't understand some of the mentality on this thread. Maybe it's a lease-hire vs owning thing.
A BMW 118D is easily 10 - 20k's worth of kit. If you have paid all that money to buy a car, why would you try to skimp on the maintenance of it?
I've got a 120D, and spend on average at least 3hours (120miles) a day driving. The car needed 2 services last year.
With BMW's fixed-price servicing I don't see the problem. Everything is there from the outset and you know how much a service will cost, and you take this into account when you buy the car.
I can't see why you would buy a new car and then go down to Halfords and try and throw some oil in it, instead of having it done by professionals where the work is guaranteed?
Dan
My new 120d Msport get delivered on Monday :D... I'll be easily doing 4k a month in it unfortunately. I heard they are a bit uneconomical though despite the published figures?
At the moment I have a 1.6d Golf hire car that get 50+mpg even when driving at 90+ on cruise control, apparently in the baby bmw you will be lucky to get much over 40 doing this? And they are apparently even more uneconomical until you have put 10k+ on them

The big issue is the service indicator reset, it's bad news for a modern diesel if you just change the oil and filter and don't get it reset. The car won't do particulate filter regenerations as it thinks its oil is still full of diesel junk (which is why it told you to change the oil).
It's not thrashing that causes an early light usually, it's short journeys. Some Fiat 500 diesel owners are getting oil change messages at 3000 miles from just pottering about the town, totally blows away the perceived diesel cost advantage!
Independent is fine but if they don't have the software to reset the service indicator I think it's a very poor value choice.

I get about 45mpg on average, mostly motorway driving with some town work. Thats about 450 - 500miles per tank.

Ha... seriously? My commute is nearlly 400 miles. I'll be living between my car and the petrol station :p
It takes me half a tank in the golf and the 1 Series tank is a fair bit bigger.

Standard audi service is around £220, and they don't half inspect the car!
I told them it needed new wipers, they found one of the numperplate lights had gone, one of the led's on the brakelight, a few other minor bits and pieces which I hadn't even noticed, replaced all said bits and didn't charge for the half an hour of labour it took to fit them, only the parts themselves (came to about £2 for bulbs, fuses and brackets). They also washed the car (no horror stories like specialPhil reported) and gave it a full valet inside..
MPG seems to be around 47mpg combined (cruising on the motorway at 85mph and speed limits around town) which works out just shy of 500 miles on a 55 litre tank of diesel.
Like sudoxe said, the servicing cost might seem alot but if it's a one off charge for a years (+/-) worth of driving, the car is pretty much new, is still in warranty and on some kind of hire agreement - it's worth paying for the car to be maintained by guys who know precisely what they're doing and have an interest in the brand.
And in the event you come to sell/hand it over, the service book will look pretty will all those official main dealer stamps. (If you have full service history from main audi dealers, they give you free MOT's for the life of the car or until the pattern of service history is broken - little perks eh?)
If you still think it's unreasonable, consider £180 as 2 or 3 nights out, a new set of tyres for your bike, 3-4 tanks of fuel for the car, or £3.46 per week for a year. Surely you can find £3.46 each week?
I love the whinging about fuel economy...40, even 30mpg..i wished. The old barge does about 20 round town and im lucky to see 30, if im real careful, on a run. The old S40 is thirstier than an AA meeting in a pub. Might have something to do with the fact it weighs over 1700kgs!
60L tank = about 340 miles round town/mixed driving

If it were MY car to keep I'd not have bought this car, put it that way, becuase I couldnt afford to :D But if I bought brand new I'd make sure I could afford the dealer services, if for nothing else than resale. So yeah, its a lease hire thing, for me anyway.
I have also read reports ofa bhp increase chip for the 116/118 which boost not only bhp but a fair whack, but does wonders for fuel economy too - again probably not allowed to do this on lease hire. Cost was around £160 iirc.
My A3 previous to this car was farkin brilliant on fuel. It literally made zero difference to mpg if I ragged it about or not, and the Audi servicing WAS excellent I must say.
All in all I wish I could chop this car in. Dont get me wrong, it is lovely to drive. I think though I was a little bit ruled by emotions rather than logic when I bought it haha.
Even though I spend 80% of the time in it alone with my kit for work, when the time comes for family trips it is a massive squeeze (wife, 2 kids, luggage).
The suspension is too focussed for familes as well - I love it, nice and stiff. But the missus complains the ride is too hard and she is getting chucked about.
And then I wish I had taken out maintenance. To be fair I didnt know my mileage would increase so much after I bought it, but at £250 a corner for these runflats...ouch. I got a screw through one of them a while ago, bang in the middle of the tread, and no fecker would bung it.
:(
Well considering I haven't washed it in about 3 months at least I get a free one.
I'll pretend that makes me feel better :DLooking around a few BMW places, an Insepction 1 servoce is 'from' £189. Like all these things, depends on what it needs done. Brake pad replacement is about £100!! Which is frankly, ridiculous.
Special One - My mates M3 rag top is going in for a pro detail with Miracle detail weekend after next. Full inside & out, and full wheel refurb, £1500! His work is unbelievable though. hes the guy that was in the paper with the '£5000 car wash' headline. He'll pick it up a week later.
