View Full Version : Tieing a bike down in the back of a van

It's long wheelbase renault master like the one in the picture..
One of the guys on the ktm forum suggested the following:
"Tying it in,IF THE VAN IS PLY LINED,just push the front wheel into the corner, lean the bar on side of van panel, use ONE ratchet strap from the footpeg furthest from the side of van to the internal roof bar and ratchet it until the bike feels rigid to the side. You may wish to use a cushion near the seat/side panel. Takes seconds once you're used to it."
The green elipse is where I'm gonna put some kind of cushion like a big roll of bubble wrap from work, and the blue is the ratchet strap. I'm also gonna cable tie the front brake on and leave it in gear so it can't roll anywhere without a fight.

Am I in the right ballpark with doing it this way?

is there no strapping hooks on the floor? maybe sit the front wheel into the vans spare wheel then strap ( just an idea)

that was a generic picture of the back of a renault master and a ktm exc (i think?) so the spare wheel is actually strapped above the nearside wheel arch in reality (and there's no sliding side door on the offside of the van like there is in the above pic)

nah.....just sit on the bike in the back, and have an 'in the dark roller coaster ride'.
Matt did it when we first brought Suzy to my house.....twas the only way to get her moved, and the van had nowt to strap it in, or any strapping, so he just sat on it. He said it was 'an experience'!

Why not get something like this and bolt it to the floor? Can be used for front or back wheels me thinks
Either that or a few eye bolts here and there with feck off ratchet straps. But I like the wheel chock thingy cos it gives a bit off stability to the whole caboodale

have you got bar straps and a paddock stand??
Paul is it going in a van you own or are hiring?
If its yours maybe take a look at these www.motocinch.co.uk (http://www.motocinch.co.uk) im getting a set for my crosser and 2 sets for taking bikes to trackdays, theres a few vids on youtube of people using them too
If youre just hiring, what youre suggesting should be fine. Front wheel jammed up against the body of the van, the ratchet strap taut so bike cant rock left or right. I always think more ratchet straps wont do any harm :)

Put the front wheel in the forward nearside corner of the load space, then attach a strap to the right footpeg, over the seat and somewhere on the left hand side, forward of the footpeg
For security add another strap from something solid on the left hand side forwards to prevent the bike moving rearwards
Biggest worry is the bike moving forward during heavy braking or an accident, so make sure it's up against the bulkhead
We did five adventures all the way to southern Spain in the fashion with no hiccups, and they're a lot heavier than a crosser...

nop just some ratchet straps unfortunately. My old man said he did it before with his 1962 triumph t21 (350 parallel twin?) which was about the size of a modern scootay, but the one I'm gonna be picking up is muuch bigger. And heavier. And orange.
Just hope I'll be half as happy as this guy looks:

Aaaah
In that case make use of the crash bars (but mind the fuel TAPS!!!!!!) to tie it down, they're a direct link to the frame

it's totally standard apart from heated grips unfortunately :( no crashbars yet although I've picked up a H&B topbox for it already :D
I've got about 6 ratchet straps (all 4m long) so I'll make sure it's braced for forwards, backwards and sideways movement as well as cable tieing the front brake & popping it in gear..

Forget the front brake, just jam it as far forwards as possible and place the straps so the tension pulls the bike forwards and left into the front nearside corner
You'll be fine:cool:
Of course your sexuality will be questioned for not riding it home...;)

1) The guy was originally gonna be at home from 4pm onwards so I wanted to get there as early as possible - Leedsmatt was gonna take me in the car since it's over 110 miles away, but he isn't available to set off til half past 3...
2) There's mega weather warnings for all of yorkshire & the north east on Sunday/Monday - I drove home from london in the van last night and there were points where the wind pushed us halfway out of our lane = friggin horrible.
I want my first ride to be on a nice sunny autumn/winter day with no hurricane are sideways rain to spoil it :) creme brulee anyone?

Honestly mate, you should see the floods at tadcaster near York (nobhead in a freelander was in front of me in the fast lane and slammed on so he could have a good look at them on the way in this morning - then when I flashed to get him to maybe look in his mirrors he started giving me the vickers - CUNNT), the weather has been really bad so I'm just gonna set off up around 2.30, nice leisurely drive, give the man some money, bring the bike back in the van (along with a new matress for my bed since it's like a bag of springs) and away we go :)

Dude, you bought an "Adventure" and you're worried about a little river crossing??

fook that! Only ever ridden one of these on test ride for 45 mins, I wanna get used to the thing before I go up Ben Nevis on it! And besides it's a new bike to me so I don't want my first journey to be 2 hours in the freezing cold dark pishing rain on the motorway, I wanna take it down some backroads and figure it out :D

OK, rivers were a little flooded, but they've all got strong bridges over them you know!

If you have ratchet straps, its a piece of p1ss to tie the bike down.
All vans have tie down eyes or perforated panelling, ratchet starp from both sides so that they are pulling against each other, that thing aint gonna move anywhere.
Tie a rope around head stock somewhere and attach that to roof through a beam or something, job done.

Your firkin kiddin me right? :-({|=
Ride it and enjoy getting wet and dirty! Make a day of it and plot as much of your route as possible through some lanes. You defo wont get cold, it will be much more interesting than the m/ways in the shizzle and ya'll gel with the bike much quicker. The sooner you do it the better.
*Ignore TLW's quips about river crossings, he cant even get through a puddle! :p
*Runs like a mofo :help:

They look cool - is it really a 'special offer' or been £95 a while? I might get some just for 'one day'
