say it was someones birthday on a Monday

say they had a personalised plate that they didnt know about. (no not Mand)

got the docs etc , local DVLA place 40 mins away .

could someone go on a friday and get the docs done and the tax disc changed over - go and have the plates made up and fit them sunday night. ?

or if car is on road for the 2 days so that the receiver hadnt got a clue for said surprise .. is it illegal? .. do plates have to go on immediate or is there some grace? ... or will car have to stay on the drive for 2 days ?.. with a "puncture"

ta oh mighty org

Its quiet some time since I've done one but even if you get all the paperwork done at the local DVLA Office I think you have to wait till you get the letter from Swansea[V948] before you can change the plate.Apart from the V5 you will have to have the insurance cert changed and the MOT stamped with the new number. The local office stamp the MOT and issue a new tax disc but you have to surrender the old one.Legally you need the V948 to get the numberplates made up under the new regulations unless you have a friendly numberplate shop

Don't take this as gosple as its about 6-7 years since I last changed mine over

When I put my plate on my car a few months ago I was surprised how straight forward and hassle free it was, I didn't have to surrender my old tax disc, they printed a new one there and then at the DVLA office and handed me all the relevent documents back and said ''OK, the new plate can go on whenever you're ready'', so I assume there is some grace period, not sure how long though

If i were you though, I'd have the new plates made up first whilst you still have the entitlement certificate, because they take this in at the office and you don't get your new V5 back until it arrives in the post a few weeks later. It saves any hassle you may have at the plate makers if you just show them the entitlement certificate and ID.

There is some grace, just keep your documentation with you in case you get pulled. The DVLA office will ask if you have plates made up, if you say 'no' they will give you a stamped certificate authorising plates to be made, you just need to take I.D. with you. Don't forget to notify your insurance company that you've changed the plates.

Disconnect the battery so it doesn't start and tell her you'll have a look at it. Then tell her the battery is dead and needs a day to charge. :smt102
